Johanna Knutsson: „For me, vinyl is the most fun medium to work with, watching a screen or looking in a CD-case never did it for me. I noticed that I never remembered the names I read on a CD, a name of a track/artist on the CD didn ́t mean anything to me. Now when I have played a vinyl record once I can remember how the track sounds by just looking at the label/sleeve, since I have a photographic memory. I also really enjoy working with my hands, I have always had jobs like that (pizza baker, hairdresser/makeup artist and now DJ). It has so far been the only interest that I have kept interested in, and it will forever me my number 1 hobby to collect and play vinyl. This mix is a special after-hour/post-party mix, suitable for dark winter days. This mix is dedicated to Mika who had an unfairly rough year behind him: you are an inspiration to so many of us!”

Johanna Knutsson’s ‘Somnis Vius’ (meaning ‘Vivid Dreams’ in Catalan) project materialised after a search for relaxing and meditative music proved fruitless, inspired to make her own selection she began to collect field recordings as she travelled. 

Comprised of natural soundscapes and forgotten gems in her record collection that she otherwise could not make use of in her usual Techno sets, the tape serves as a post-party comedown soundtrack as much as it does an aid to sleep or meditation.

This year's Nachtdigital record follows the path we started to explore in 2017: To combine artists who are close to us, each given the specific task to tell a story in up to 24 minutes (which is pretty much the maximum you can press on one side of a vinyl record) - with complete artistic freedom. And we are more than happy with the contributions we received:

KANN went for a decidedly collaborative effort, gathering bits and pieces from the label's core artists and glueing them together for one big, cohesive narrative. The result is somewhat experimental but also typically KANN in its sound and character: Intimate and homely but also dancy and energetic.

Johanna Knutsson turned in a long Ambient piece that feels like talking a walk with her through summery fields and meadows. It's Johanna's first proper Ambient release and quite the perfect fit since she will also give her live debut on Nachtdigital's much-loved Ambient stage this year.

Vai follows on side C: He is a longstanding member of the Nachtdigital crew and has been writing and producing the music for our traditional opening performance for many years. One of the most versatile and yet-to-be-discovered producers in our sphere, this elaborative piece hopefully also is just a teaser of what's to come in the future.

Side D belongs to the most odd contribution we got: Poet Manuel Stallbaumer and music "professor" Stefan Schmidt-Dichte (also known as Perm) brought their individual talents to the table and created a remarkable piece of listening pleasure - a weird, baffling fusion of poetry and sound that is definitely worth diving into.

The record comes in form of a double vinyl LP with fancy gatefold cover and artwork by bus.group. As always, the release will first be available at the festival and in a handful of carefully selected record stores thereafter - as well as at the Nachtdigital webshop.
The total playtime of the record is almost 90 minutes so it really is the perfect companion for a nice walk through the park, cooking with friends or taking an evening off on the couch.

Oscillate Tracks 003 is the first split EP featuring resident Johanna Knutsson and alumni Karen Gwyer. The two performed together early last year, Karen live with her shimmering textures before Johanna introduced her bleepy tales. Their musical affinity was easily recognisable and our aim was to bring their dynamic connection from one fleeting experience onto the enduring form of a record. 

On Johanna’s side, the Swedish producer plays with tempo and panning, constructing vast soundscapes on the backdrop of a dubbed-out alternating bass drum with refrains from her Nord synth rippling throughout. On the flip we find Karen exploring melancholic ambient IDM, layering sparkling notes over lush melodies interlaced with rapid percussions, forming utterly exquisite works of art.

Shape-shifting South Londoner Metro Zee (C. Morris) arrives on Ritual Poison with a six-track EP that transports the label far into the outer reaches.

Having previously released on respected imprint World Unknown as Mo Reece and remixed Detroit house royalty Mike ‘Agent X’ Clark under his Peter Rocket moniker, his eponymous full debut EP as Metro Zee journeys down a distant wormhole and emerges into a cloud of skittering beats, melodic nebula and dense cosmic energy.

Written in a windowless studio in Bermondsey during a year of self-imposed isolation after stopping drinking and taking drugs, it’s a record swirling with emotion and intricate programming, and, he says, is “entirely constructed out of a single field recording of a slowly pickling radish that I stole from my neighbour's allotment.”

The vulnerable melancholy of ‘Barbd’ bleeds into the bittersweet junglist strut of ‘Carer’ (which comes with a symbolic computer-animated video by director Felix Villiers), ‘Battered Mazda’ exploding into a metallic whirl of 170BPM release. ‘Cetacea’ wears the optimistic bop of tomorrow’s eternal hope before stirring sinister streams of the sub-consciousness, ‘Turtle GoPro’ is a blissful glimpse into the deep, sub-aquatic world of a technologically-astute testudine and ‘Manningtree Freeze’ fades out to eternity in a shoegazery haze.
