The flower bed is humid awaiting wanted seed
A stalk erect and tumid towers over wanton weed
The pistol and the stamen anticipate delight
Cause once we start we’re staying in the garden bed tonight

You can do your running and a calisthenic set
But surely there’s more fun in making sure the garden’s wet
The groundskeeper is tilling under hard and beating sun
A mound still needs some filling as the gardening’s begun

Call a spade a spade you crave a useful tool
The gardener must wade across your fragrant tulip pool
So when the evening moon emits its scarlet light
The flower bed will swoon for some gardening tonight

My words are lost in the words I use
I don’t mean to obscure or confuse
But nothing I’ve said’s gotten through to you
So why do I keep talking on? 

Mix my mind with metaphor
Ask me what I’m asking for
Is there a reason behind this all?

My time is wasted on the times I have
Good days have escaped me along with the bad
But each day I spend I can’t get back
So why do I keep buying time?  

Take my time with metaphor
Ask me what I’m asking for
It’s not my place to ask for more

I’ve mixed words and time to write this song
The meaning isn’t certain and it isn’t very long
But maybe it’s a metaphor for what’s gone wrong
Hey, let me know what you come up with.

Mix our minds with metaphor

Winter Coat

Darkness hangs itself on every face I see
We share the inside, seven days a week
Thoughts and daydreams are following my eyes
Anticipating getting out, to the outside

Then I see Marlene, walking in her winter coat
Through the company window, on the fresh fallen snow

And I wonder why she's always out there, walking out in the snow
What's wrapped up inside that winter coat? 

We always hang ourselves on who we want to be
And so we acquiesce, and let them keep us here
Outside the window, trundling cross the snow
Winter woman's bundled, up in her winter coat
We can't blame circumstance for poisoning our lives
What demon in us keeps us here inside?

And I see Marlene, walking in her winter coat
Through the company window, on the fresh fallen snow

And I wonder what's behind those wild blue eyes
What's wrapped up inside that winter coat? 

Sadness hangs itself on all the faces here
But it's Christmas time, and they let us out for New Year
So by five fifteen I'm far, far away
Sitting down and stretching out at a table in Pete's Cafe

When I see Marlene, taking off her winter coat
She puts down her cup of tea, and sits right in front of me

And I say, "You don't know me 
but I see you every day walking out in the snow
dressed up in your winter coat
how come you like the cold so?" 

Well she giggles and says, "Winter's my favorite
but not on account of the freezing ice; 
I just like coming in from the cold
and taking off that winter coat."
