[Alice in Wonderland] I Only Paint in Red Now -Lydia the Bard

STORY 

There once lived a young girl named Alice, who found herself in a strange and mysterious place called Wonderland. The world she had entered was dark and beautiful, full of magic and mystery. At first, she was mesmerised by what she saw, but there was a darkness in the air, a quiet chaos in the very ground, almost as if the land was living, breathing. 

Alice’s wonder slowly turned to a growing unease. She began to find herself doing and saying things the past Alice wouldn’t have dreamed of, as whispers in her ear tempted her towards a new version of herself, scrambling her thoughts. It was almost as if Wonderland itself was infecting her with its madness. One moment, she was the curious and polite girl from her village, and the next, she was a twisted reflection of herself. Her laughter became a cackle, her smile a smirk, and her once-bright eyes glinted with a sinister light. Desperate to get back home and return to her normal self, Alice frantically searched for a way out. But each step forward seemed to pull her deeper into the clutches of Wonderland’s madness.

In the depths of the woods, she met the Caterpillar, who eyed her with a knowing look.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I... I don’t know anymore,” Alice replied, her voice a mixture of confusion and despair. “I need to find my way home.”

Alice’s desperation grew as she felt herself almost split in two, watching this darker version of herself slowly take over. If she could just find her way home before the Wonderland version of herself took full control, then the nightmare would finally be over. But Alice couldn’t have possibly known just how deep Wonderland’s roots were inside her. Sure, she could leave Wonderland, but Wonderland was never going to truly leave her ever again.

ペアテストの教室に差し込む冬の光は、
まるで小さな雪の粒がひとつずつ歌いながら降りてくるみたいに、
静かで、やわらかく揺れていた。

人の声、ページをめくる音、
遠くで鳴ったチャイムが、
鈴の音のようにきらめいて胸を震わせる。

“二人で何かをつくる”
そんなの初めてで、
胸の奥があたたかくなりすぎて、私はもう抑えきれなかった。

「ねえ見て、次の課題……
　ほら、あれ、絶対ふたりならできるよね」

わたしが指さすたび、
彼は少し照れたように笑って「うん、任せて」と頷く。

その笑顔が、
まるで冬空にひらく星の音みたいで、
胸の奥のどこかが何度もきらんと灯った。

楽しいだけなのに、どうして胸がぎゅっとなるんだろう。

「ねえ……知らなかったんだ。
　二人で同じものを見て、同じ音を聞いて、
　同じ場所を目指すだけで、
　心ってこんなに温かくなるんだね。」

生きているって、
きっとこういうリズムのことなんだ。
“誰かと一緒に息を揃えて、隣で笑って、向かい風の中でも歩くこと。”

今日は、初めて素直にそう思えた。

次の課題用に用品を選ぶ机には、
赤いマーカー、金のクリップ、冬柄の付箋、
小さなベルの絵が描かれたメモ帳まであった。

触れた指先に、紙の冷たさと彼の影が重なって、
それだけで胸が震えた。

「これ、君が使った方が似合うよ」
「え、じゃあこれと交換しよ。お揃いみたいで可愛いし」

少し軽くて、少し特別で、
まるで二人だけのクリスマス前夜を歩いているみたいだった。

そして――
ふと、一つの万年筆が目に留まった。

深い夜空のようなネイビー。
静かな光を宿した細身のライン。
これなら、彼の癖のある筆跡を
もっと綺麗に支えてくれそうだと、
なぜかすぐにわかった。

「……これ、彼に似合う」

胸に浮かんだその言葉が、
自分でも驚くほどあったかかった。

テストが終わった帰り道。
冬の夕日が廊下のガラスに反射して、
彼の横顔に金色のハイライトを落とした。

「ねえ、それ……やっぱり自分のじゃなかったんだ？」

わたしの手の中の紙袋を見て、
彼は少し息を呑んだ。

「うん。これは……
　いつもわたしのペースに合わせてくれる君に、
　わたしから贈りたくて。」

冬の空気が揺れて、
白い息がふわっと消えていく。

その瞬間、胸の奥があたたかくほどけていって、
わたしは――泣きながら笑っていた。

嬉しくて、愛しくて、
“誰かの幸せを願う自分”になれたことが誇らしかった。

「今日ね、生きててよかったって思ったんだ。
　君の横で問題を解きながら、
　“うまくできたらいいな”って願う気持ちが、
　心のどこかにあたらしい灯をつけてくれたの。」

その灯はもう消えなかった。
胸の奥で、小さなクリスマスベルみたいに鳴り続けている。

彼は驚いた顔のまま、
そっとわたしの手を包み込んだ。

「……ありがとう。
　君が選んでくれたものなら、なんだって宝物だよ。」

その瞬間、わたしはもう
“誰かの隣を遠くから羨むだけの人”じゃなかった。

**“大切な人と同じ歌を紡ぐことのできる、
冬空の下で初めて恋を手にした一人の人”**だった。

クリスマス前夜の光は、
二人の影を重ねながら、
そっと祝福するように揺れていた。

Hello everyone! This week I sang It’s Tough To Be A God from Road To El Dorado with the lovely Elise Lovelock!

I love this song and I had such a hard time believing that there were so few covers of it! I needed to change that. It took a bit of time (and more effort than I expected) but it was worth it! This cover knocks my socks off everytime I listen to it. I think it’s fair to say it has taken the top spot as my personal favorite.

Elsie is such a powerhouse!  She sings, she acts, and she was kind enough to agree to a duet with lil old me! In truth, I’ve been gassing myself up for years to approach her for a duet but I’m SO glad I finally did it. I could not have made such a kick-butt rendition without her lovely voice. Thank you so much for joining me! 

Another big thank you to Ryan as well! His instrumentals are always amazing and always make my life a million times easier (and he cranks them out super fast which is ?????? but very much appreciated because my work schedule is a disaster).
