The band Carrier gets formed at the end of the last song of their debut album. Until then, it’s sort of speculative: on When New York Is Drowning, frontman Adam Downer is busy doing other stuff, like stressing the fuck out. He’s watching debt build up, firefighting the end of a relationship and having autopilot anxiety about climate change. At so many points on so many songs, he floats a solution: start a band, maybe? Write a smash hit? They’re expressed in Downer’s lyrics, echoing through the album as if this is something he’s been threatening to do for years. By the end of the record, it’s done.

Inadvertently ten years in the making, the bulk of Carrier’s songs come straight out of Downer’s twenties, back when he was living in Amsterdam. Back then, he was leaning into the louder, more aggressive side of things. Swaying between pop-punk and indie rock extremes - from the gang vocal harmonies of Bomb The Music Industry! to the two-chord speedruns of Japandroids - he was all about the bombast. 

That’s heard on Carrier’s “Bitter Child”, a song so immediate that it pretty much exists in a state of collapse, its quick and cathartic riff drowning under layers of triumphant fuzz. It’s been the single for as long as he’s known, always “the song that would launch the hypothetical band.” It’s now what he calls a “thesis statement” for Carrier’s debut album When New York Is Drowning, staying on the rails of pop-punk and embracing its cliches while having the experience of time to know where things are going, and what actually counts for shit. It absolutely sounds like the song you start a band for. 

There’s more than a little genre contradiction going on within Carrier. With jazz aficionado Bart Mol on guitar, young, hard rock advocate Skye Matlock on bass, and an alt-rock-loving drummer in Greg Russo, When New York Is Drowning plays with clashing textures, delving into Pixies-esque doldrums on “Little Fish” and ocean-soaked melancholy on the title track, but where the band comes together best is in the anthem of it all. It’s those moments of pop-punk solidarity - they trade lines and sing parts like these are their favorite songs.

“The album is about looking back at yourself, and almost finding a use for the music you’ve grown out of”, Downer says. Though the songs on Carrier’s debut album are old, part of Downer’s past, they’re still his. Rather than block it out, When New York Is Drowning celebrates the naivety and fervor of our past selves, and the ritual of making something big of the way we feel.

This is another one of my super quick covers, which was recorded and mastered in a couple of hours. It's non too tight, but that's the way I like it for these covers.

When I first heard this track by Bad Religion I didn't like it, I thought it was crass and unimaginative, but after a while I figured out that was the whole idea. Sometimes all you can say, whether it's correct or not to, is just say fuck you, it might be the wrong situation for a number of reasons but that's all you can muster, and even if you could have said something more eloquently, at least you said something.

So, if you don't like this track then.... that's fair enough, I respect that.

"Fuck Authority" is the fourth track from Pennywise's sixth studio album Land of the Free?.

In the context of the Kamloops residential school story, it allegorically references the 2021 announcement of 215 suspected unmarked graves via ground-penetrating radar, which ignited widespread grief and calls for justice but has faced growing skepticism by 2025 due to the lack of exhumations or confirmed remains, portraying this as a "myth" collapsing under the weight of unmet evidence. The lyrics emphasize a revolutionary payback through truth, urging the opening of "books" and audits to reveal receipts and names, symbolizing demands for proof amid accusations of denialism and the fading trust in the initial story's "sacred smoke."
