EPM Podcast #174 - Skov Bowden

First Friday of the month, kicking off Friday 5th April. Trace at Brunswick Cellars will see resident Chris Curtis joined by a rotation of guests playing right across the electronic spectrum. From Balearic through to House, Broken Beat and Techno. To be announced each month, the night will be a celebration of local talent. Musically forward looking but with one foot in the past. Deep grooves paired with hypnotic visuals on a tremendous sound system. April 5th will see Chris joined by Dave Stark, a tremendous local Dj and purveyor of Deep House 
 
Chris spent many years in Aberdeen, taking residency at the locally famed Techno night Metropolis with partner in crime Chris Knox. In addition to the regular residents nights, Chris took on warm up duties for the likes of Dave Clarke, Surgeon, Justin Robertson and Claude Young to name a few. Working through many bar residencies also provided a platform for a more laid back sound and deeper grooves.
 
Moving back to his hometown of Glasgow, Chris is currently one of the residents of the subSine Sessions and presents the monthly subSine Sessions show on Radio Buena Vida, also releasing music on the new local label Subplant Recordings under his Theta Waves moniker. 
 
If the music is deep and can lock you in a groove, we will be celebrating it. Join us at Trace, Brunswick Cellars 1st Friday of the month.

EPM Podcast 175 comes from artist Alberto Melloni. Alberto is an Italian electro-disco producer, musician, DJ and co-owner of Raibano Records. In the early days of his musical career, as guitarist and synth player, he stepped onto the stage through Italy and Europe with many different artists. Today, as DJ and producer, Alberto carries on his solo project by producing new music somewhere between disco, italo, afro, techno and rock. Thee innovator of Acid House & tha creator of the Wild Pitch sound.I have to give much prop'z to my brother for helping me out to staying focused when creating music & djing. We played a lot together at various clubs around the globe & let me tell you, every time I'd play, Pierre would jump on the EQ & tweak it while I dj'd. There was something magical about our sets together.
I also have to give Pierre mad respect for supplying me with unreleased music to test out on all the radio shows I did. I also learned a lot on how he works on his productions. That alone was alwayz a treat to just soak up as much as I can.

From his work as part of Access 58 in the late 90s to setting up Cadenza Records with Luciano in 2001, Quenum has gone on to release on the likes of Transmat, Crosstown Rebels, Cocoon, Fabric and Get Physical. Here for the EPM Podcast he brings his years of techno know how together for a restrained minimal mix that features the likes of Helmut Dubnitzky & Jackspot, Vin Sol & Matrixxman, Paul Woolford, Detroit Grand PuBahs, Damien Almira, D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Ed Davenport and more.

When Quenum settled in London in the 90s he started working with Paulo Nascimento, a studio musician and sound engineer. In 1997 they released their first EP on Pacific Records - that is how Access 58 was born. They performed live and played DJ gigs at all the legendary London clubs, such as The End and the Velvet Rooms, for Carl Cox’s Ultimate Base nights. Access 58 collaborated with major artists of the 90s, such as The Advent and Umek and released over 30 EPs on various labels including their own (also called Access 58). 

In 2001 Quenum moved to Switzerland, where he soon met another talented artist with whom he would make history, Luciano. Together, in Luciano’s studio in the Swiss mountains, they composed “Orange Mistake” – recognized as one of the anthems of techno music. But when they approached various labels to release it, no one was interested. That’s how they started their own label, Cadenza. Soon after Luciano moved to Berlin, becoming the label’s boss. From his base in Geneva, QUENUM continued playing all the big clubs in the US and Europe – especially with Cadenza in Panorama Bar where they invited Apollonia, Thomas Melchior, Loco Dice – riding the wave of interest that “Orange Mistake” generated. 

In the next decade he continued producing groovy techno released on all the top labels (incl. Transmat, Crosstown Rebels, Cocoon, Fabric, Get Physical) and playing clubs all over the world. His love for the groove was nurtured in his music-filled Afro-Caribbean home. 

Now you will find QUENUM playing all over the world. From 2013 to 2019 Quenum worked in partnership with Cesare vs Disorder. Together as Azimute they toured Asia, Australia and South America. They released Azimute on Serialism and ran their label nights in Brazil, London and Berlin. 

QUENUM is known as one of the friendliest faces in techno, which explains why he loves collaborating with his brothers-and-sisters-in-arms. For QUENUM, each collaboration is an opportunity to learn and share his passion with friends. His latest collaboration ‘My Definition of Groove’ features Detroit Grand PuBah Paris The Black Fu and is out now on Engineroom.

I hesitated for a long time to post this mix for a number of reasons which in the end, on reflection, are completely unfounded.
2009 was a rich and important year in my career as a dj. At the time I was playing on Tractor vinyl, so all the tracks I played disappeared when my laptop burnt out, and I'd just bought a brand new mixer, my Xone 62, which took me to a new technical level.
I'd like to thank Valery B for asking me to do this mix for his radio show l'Ouvre Boite on Radio RAJE.
I'm sorry I lost the tracklist, but I remember playing 2 tracks by my brother Little J aka Jus GRUV, the first of which was in the mix, followed by STL, Move D, Kapuchon & Benny Rodrigues, Marco Bernardi and more.
