Kris Begg & The Blacksmith is a group from Montreal, Canada. Their music has roots in acoustic folk and rock, with sounds that are full of rich autobiographical stories that often take a wildly experimental direction. Kris Begg is a singer/songwriter from a small town in southern Ontario. Vioet Blacksmith is a violinist and artist from Ottawa, Ontario. She is truly the 'Blacksmith', who brings the songs together and brings them to life. Often working with other various musicians show to show, Kris Begg & The Blacksmith are the roots of what this project is all about.

Let me make this absolutely clear.

The mixes that I'm posting here all have something in common. They're all slightly imperfect because they're all 100% vinyl sets, or they're lifted from cassette tapes, some of which were made up to 20 years ago. What I'm mostly interested in doing here is promoting an understanding of what my style sounds like. This is real 90s underground, mostly from the SF Bay Area, mixed in ways that I like. 

I don't ever mix anything mainstream, and I don't have any trap, dubstep, jungle, drum&bass, rap, hip-hop, or downtempo in my vinyl collection. My selection of trance and hardstyle is also profoundly limited. My entire collection has less than one crate of music that was made after Y2k. I mix vinyl exclusively, without traktor or seratto, and I don't use any mixing effects, so what you get is what you get, live. Sync buttons don't exist on vinyl.

If you accept that the vast majority of modern EDM does not mix with 90s Underground at all, and that club sets are completely different than underground sets, we'll get along just fine. ps: if I wanted to play club sets, I'd have gone digital a long time ago.

What I do have is a decent collection of house and acid with some breakbeats, wildpitch, and older trance. I don't like mixing too much stuff from the same genre together either, since it's usually not very challenging, artistically. You will usually hear me shift into at least three different music genres per set. That's just how I roll.

If all you care about is providing good music that people who are familiar with these music styles will dance to, I think I can probably accomplish that. Just understand what you are buying.
 
If you insist upon my mixing a perfect set, I will mix one at home and record it, and bring it to the party and press play. Then I will wave at the crowd and act self-important as I pretend to mix my records. 

OR 

I can actually perform my mix live, like a DJ is supposed to, and mix my records according to what I actually see happening on the dance floor. Just be aware that I'm mixing records, so it probably won't be as perfect as digital mixes can be, but I have a few things that I can do, too.

This means that I won't be constantly waving to the crowd. And I won't be running around, throwing cakes, or making heart signs at them either. I will probably appear quite sedate or intensely focused behind the decks. It's not because I'm arrogant, but more like I'll be far too busy throwing down wax in ways that the vast majority of Music Producers can't, not without resorting to using a pre-recorded set.

What you will hear from me is music that is around twenty years old being deeply blended. If you like what you hear, feel free to share it with anyone and everyone. Good music sets you free!
