Roland began his career as a DJ at the innovative and now legendary Rave Club in Cologne in 1988 and 2 years later, The Space Club opened in Cologne, with Roland as resident DJ. In 1992 Roland moved to the Warehouse in Cologne, where, as a resident DJ, he mixed alongside the most prominent DJs of the scene and began to develop an international reputation and started the Psycho Thrill night with a partner at the Ballhaus in Bonn.

In 1994, The Warehouse closes, but Psycho Thrill develops a huge cult following and an unparalleled reputation. In 1996, Roland started his own label, Essence, in cooperation with Roadrunner. Besides Roland´s own releases, the label is primarily set up as a forum for newcomers to the German Techno and Acid underground. In the course of the first year, thirteen 12" singles and the Psycho Thrill compilation are released to great critical acclaim and Roland’s name is put well and truly on the global map.

The third edition in our V-Series imprint dives back into Roland’s formative Essence years and kicks off with the propulsive, acid-jacking, club-storming ‘Strong Box’ before he then shows his quirky, minimal side with the off-kilter spiral of ‘Play Hooky’. ‘Pic-Nic’ takes it back to classic Detroit hats, underpinned by a driving Chicago rhythm before ‘Moritz’ once again takes an unusual side-step that wouldn’t seem out of place on Belgium’s legendary Wonka label. Finally, ‘Highway’ drives off on a linear groove and ‘Hen Fruit’ does the funky chicken with mutated trumpets and stabs that see it spin off into the sweat soaked, Windy City night.

The third offering in our mix series is a live recording of Priori and Cousin's dj set at Sustain Release 2024. Recorded on the last morning between 6am and 1pm on what was meant to be an ambient stage, it featured everything a 3 day festival closing set should. Eclectic picks, strange and emotional sounds, dubious transitions and a few feigned endings. Massive thanks to all the dancers, the Sustain staff (Aurora, Ash and everybody else who put their blood, sweat and tears into this), the music makers, the birds, the stars.

The mastermind behind Basic Channel, Hard Wax and Rhythm & Sound doesn't do mixes. For RA.1000, he made an exception.

Trace Mark Ernestus's path, and you trace the evolution of electronic sound itself. The timeline of contemporary Berlin is unimaginable without him. At first, that meant Hard Wax, the crucial hub that shaped the early era of the city's techno revolution. Carl Craig once said it plainly: "Mark was ground zero."

From there, Ernestus never stopped. There's the birth of dub techno and the near-flawless catalogue that followed through Basic Channel and Rhythm & Sound. There's his immersion in Senegalese mbalax with Ndagga Rhythm Force. Lately, that means Open Ground the Wuppertal bunker that's letting people hear music as never before.

As part three of RA.1000, Ernestus has kindly supplied his first studio DJ mix. As you might expect, it's technically immaculate, but more than that, it feels like a substantial and generous conduit to one of the world's most vital genres.

Amapiano remains underexplored in music media. Publications like our own are still learning to keep pace with the South African sound's global pull, animating millions across the globe. 

You'll hear the range and richness of the genre across the near two-hour mix, from the gothic, percussive stomp of Caltetonic's "Bambela"  to the devotional glow of GemValleyMusiq's "Something Spiritual."

Through all of this, Ernestus has remained understated. He lets the music speak for him, with a quiet honesty that lies in decades of opening doors—creating the conditions for new sounds and scenes to flourish and carry the culture forward.

For episode 63, I am very excited and honored to have a special mix by Oklahoma City major head Stin from @chatpile . This is just over an hour of a musical history of all shades of underground freak rock/punk/metal from Oklahoma City. Beginning in the 70s and ending with our current moment. As someone who stepped into this chronology as a fan and fellow noise-maker in the late 00s/early 10s, I personally found it invigorating to understand on a deeper sonic level where the sounds were coming from that we were all making. Today you will hear people talk about the loss of regional sound identities, but I’m hoping that the act of drawing from the ghosts of your local alternative spheres has not completely died out. After listening to the mix, it seems like those connections you find with the roots of a scene happen in many different ways and are often unconscious. For example, playing in bands with people slightly older than you, finding the same records at the local shops, attending gigs together and soaking up the same influences. There are bands, people, and labels mentioned in here that make up the core of my music-loving DNA. There were so many older freaks who were taking care of me as a teenager while I was out on a school night at The Conservatory (legendary OKC venue) catching music from around the world at wildly cheap door costs. And then I imagine that happening to those who were older than me when they were kids…a beautiful freaky cycle. 

I can’t mention enough how much Stin is a pillar of our local music scene in OKC. He ran a tape label called Nerd Party, which he mentions. @dusthousestudio is where I and so many people in the City recorded our records (Chat Pile still records there!). I wouldn’t have seen so many awesome bands that came through OKC in the 00s and 10s, if it weren’t for Stin and his friends nudging me to go. The Speed Falkon tape that he put out (he plays a track off of it) is one of my all-time favorite OKC underground installments. I played that tape OUT. And I just checked…it’s not even listed on Discogs. There are some real delights here that you won’t hear outside of Stin’s bedroom. Truly honored to have him open up his media collection to us with this Okie curatorial lens and for the bits and bobs shared in between the music. I hope you enjoy, and since he says he’s down, we will definitely be inviting him for another episode of specialties. But first, sit back and enjoy the sounds of the OKC underground as selected by Stin!
