Team work makes the dream work… Young UK talent Sahar returns to the ISOLATE family for another wonderful electronic excursion. Following ‘The Getaway’ on the label’s last ‘Mutations’ collection, and the beguiling ‘Different Days’ EP last year comes ‘Soul Work’. 

Four explorative pieces that take us off to vibrant, faraway places; each cut reveals more and more about the rising talent who broke through late 2019 on Nein Records… 

‘The Distance’ sets the tone with swaggering breakbeat prowess and huge swathes of atmospheres. The scene set, the title track swoops in and sweeps us off our feet with layered vocals that gradually open out and develop throughout the track. Deep, pulsating, cosmic and just a smidgeon of shoegaze charm, it’s the sound of Sahar really refining his sound and signature. 

‘Hindsight’ follows a similar route as Sahar’s falsetto vocals glide over the mix in a mesmerising way, literally elevating the dance and whisking us off to destinations beyond limitation. Last but not least ‘The War Of Art’ ensures we remain in Sahar’s unique universe until the very last beat. Dramatic build ups, epic synth blasts and a rolling sense of musical thunder, this won’t just arrest your soul but your attention, imagination and passion, too. 

Soul work is the whole work… Sahar has gone many extra miles here.

microCastle’s fifth and final offering of 2022 welcomes Radeckt back to the label for a new EP. Since emerging in 2016 Danish artist Radeckt has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of melody and rhythm, drawing the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. On the strength of releases for MoBlack and TAU, Radeckt made his microcastle debut in August of last year with ‘Illusions of a Romantic’. A four-track affair that masterfully balanced rich production with fire-starting spontaneity. A strong 2022 schedule has seen the Copenhagen resident with a consistent stream of superlative releases via Acrylic on Canvas, Frau Blau and Nandu’s Out of Options, the latter of which landed with a resounding thump. Now, following a contribution to Volume Four of TAU’s popular ‘Spektrum’ series, Radeckt returns to microCastle with a five-track showcase entitled ‘Jackal’.

As a recent favourite of Aera, Denis Horvat and Nandu, EP opener and title selection ‘Jackal’ finds Radeckt at his creative best. Instantly seductive, its industrial structures and machine progressions drive each other into a whirlpool of spiralling directions, making for a flexible club track that bends between scenes while injecting vibrant energy into the dancefloor. While this looping hypnotism does not fail to command your attention, it also provides a segue into the subterranean wobbles and charged rhythms of ‘Playful Passion’. The chaotic tranquility that has always been a peculiarity of Radeckt’s music finds its peak here, as crunchy melodica, disembodied voices and multi-dimensional synth manoeuvres meet in a black hole of corrosive beauty and mesmerizing darkness.

Moving forward to selection three, the collection’s lone collaboration, Auggie and Radeckt masterfully synthesize their talents into one singular brain-bending vision that is ‘Vela’. Played by Trikk, its machine gun grooves anchor esoteric chord stabs and prismatically split particles, eventually scrambled into traces of elasticated synth swagger for a frenzied finale. The intuitive musical dialogue held between the duo preludes the sonic surgery of selection four ‘Himiko’. A prophetic journey where weighted rhythms and scintillating synth flares are contrasted by collapsing waves of light. As one might expect from Radeckt, the arrangements are masterworks of understated execution with oversized emotional resonance, a feeling that perfectly shifts energy into the release’s final act ‘Conflict in Retrospect’. Warped by jet engine exhaust and retro vocal stabs, there’s a white-knuckled tension applied to the elements here, playing off one another throughout, resulting in a hugely energetic collection closing vortex.

Hot on the heels of his acclaimed debut EP released a few months ago on the label, Barcelona-based producer Gespona reemerges on Stil vor Talent with his eagerly-anticipated followup, "Magota". Comprising four tracks that move the cursor from stealth bass percolation to exotica-fuelled swagger, via injections of tendinous hip-hop-laced prog and heavily processed machine funk, this sophomore incursion from the Spanish talent does way better than simply keeping its promises: it opens on dimensions that were hinted at, but yet to unfold on Gespona's previous efforts. 

Lead-single "Magota" fractures its way in through a well-balanced blend of powerhouse subs and brittle piano chords. Remaining subtle in his approach, keen to explore further that grey area between neo-classical mellifluousness and proper club-focused firepower, Gespona treats us to a masterly orchestrated slice of poignant electronics, culminating through a prismatic climax of heart-broken synth swashes and finessed clavier expression. More of a functional DJ tool, "Umbra" heads straight for the jugular with its sweatbox-ready bass attacks, Egyptian-like melody and ominous buildup, tailored for nothing else but flinging the dance floor into a state of never-ending euphoria.  

Joining forces with Abuk on the breaksy, old-school house-inspired "Stat Out There", Gespona fires off yet another perfectly integrated mix of forward-moving dynamics and Chicagoan soulfulness. Riddled with melancholic keys and Abuk's haunting vocals, the track cuts a path truly its own, slacklining adroitly between classic piano house sensuality and a hi-intensity electro punch. Capping it all proper EBM-style, the aptly-titled "Jigsaw" featuring Althoff is what you'd call a hard-churning workout, progressively evolving from a rather straightforward momentum onto jagged 4x4 mechanisms to floor-devastating effect. Superior focus and execution from a producer who's undeniably on the cusp of even greater things.
