The 15th release from Sum Over Histories, the label from electronic music duo Frankey & Sandrino, comes from Istanbul-based artist Murat Uncuoglu.

With an ear for music and a mind for technology, the five-track EP delves deep into the nuances of intelligent dance music. Uncuoglu became fascinated by the intersection of music and technology in Turkey, and chose London as the place to elevate and amplify his passion and curiosity. The city opened up his head and heart to the possibilities of progressive house which he then took home to Istanbul to build and expand the scene there. Every production feels like a spontaneous journey of discovery; Uncuoglu is unafraid of pushing boundaries and exploring the unseen edges and dark corners of electronic music. 

The title track, Invisible Eyes is arguably the most emotive and introspective of the EP. With gushing synths and messianic build-ups, the track has the texture of the other-worldly; a musical realm to get lost in. Uncuoglu’s signature style starts simple and grows increasingly complex. He adds hi-hats, synths, idiophones and effects reminiscent of smoke machines billowing over a packed nightclub. 

Uncuoglu flexes his unparalleled production skills with Sooner or Later, a stripped back percussion-driven track for deep thinkers and conscious listeners. It begins methodically, until Uncuoglu layers in digitised synths and frenetic percussion to create a mammoth analogue and digital crescendo, a symbiotic reflection of our online and offline existence. Bloom is another nod to Uncuoglu’s fascination with technology, a combination of deep synths and hospital-like bleeps that descend into controlled chaos. Uncuoglu takes the listener on a journey to the inner most corners of his psyche with this profound and deeply moving track.

Dairy is powerful and drum-driven, sitting in the intersection of chaos and order. Uncuoglu’s productions often tread the line between the two, so the listener feels lost one second and grounded the next. It’s a profound skill that’s demonstrated well in Feed. The track begins with a 4:4 beat, until Uncuoglu introduces percussion elements along with unexpected time-signatures. Synths and bass and hi-hats create a near chaotic mesh of sounds, only to break down and return to the 4:4. The result is a beautiful, unpredictable construction that encapsulates the many facets of progressive house.

Anthony Middleton kickstarted his career DJing in iconic Marbella clubs and refining production skills at a pioneering UK music technology school in the mid-90s. His musical journey led him to the vibrant dance music scene in London. Meanwhile, Zoo Brazil, also known as John Andersson, earned Grammy and Brit Awards nominations, solidifying his reputation as an innovative and respected figure in dance music.

Guided by a shared affinity for analogue exploration, the duo employed an arsenal of vintage and modern gear, including the Vintage ARP 2600, Moog Model D, SSL AWS 900+se Console, and more. The resulting composition, “Good Times,” has seamlessly woven haunting melancholy into an irresistibly groovy symphony.

As a testament to its prowess, the track has been a closely guarded secret weapon in the DJ sets of both Zoo Brazil and Anthony for over a year. The mindset behind its creation was one of spontaneity, a deliberate choice to let creativity flow unhindered. “Good Times” stands as an authentic reflection of their musical synergy, inviting listeners into a realm where friendship and innovation harmoniously converge.

Fresh from excursions on Gruuv and New Violence, Glaswegian Dalfie returns to Catz ‘N Dogz Pets with three more marching orders. Please stand to attention:
‘Outlaw’ sets the tone with a slinky synth bass groove, a shadow-creeping ambience and a neat sense of momentum that takes you unaware with subtle twists and diversions en route. An ideal opener or transition piece, ‘Outlaw’ whips up an atmosphere like no other.  ‘For It’ adds acidic petrol to the deep, dark fire. Slow-burning with a hip-slinking percussion-tinted groove, it gradually gets darker and darker as we creep further into Dalfie’s 303s. By the time we’re submersed in the breakdown our veins are nothing by circuits and frequencies run through them like blood.
For our final leg of the journey Dalfie leaves us in a brighter mindset with ‘Right Up’. Taking cues from both mid 90s Chicago and late 90s Paris, there’s an unquenchable funk woven deep into the filtered samples, pushing beats, carnivalian percussion and the lolloping bassline. Twisted in places, fluctuating in others, seriously vibrant throughout, this is a precision intersection of house, techno and disco all rolled into one seriously vibed-out party piece. Don’t be a stranger!

Brazilian duo Binaryh is absolutely on fire. They’ve been dropping bomb after bomb on Steyoyoke Black and now they’ve come up with their Éolo EP, made of two superb Techno cuts.
 The first one, ‘Noto’, goes gentle on the beats. It’s about a melodic crusade where an elegant synth loop enhances colours before its very echoes fade into the mist that surrounds it. Deep, dingy and graceful.
 Second track, ‘Bóreas’, comes with full power introducing Binaryh’s usual pace. Forceful techno with an ostensible bassline, tense atmosphere, thumping kicks and crushing drop. Definitely the complete package.

The duo shows great versatility with this work, presenting different aspects of their musical concept. Two different approaches for a genre that’s natively dark, called Techno.
