For nearly 200 years the piano’s design has been exactly the same: 12 keys 7 times, low-to high = left-to-right.

But why 12..? Why left-to-right..? What if…

Beyond Twelve is a project that uses state-of-the-art physical modeling technology to break free from the constraints of this design—and the piano will never be the same again.

Concert pianist Aron Kallay premieres new works from eight of America’s most visionary composers, who were given two ground rules for these commissions:

1) Re-tune the keyboard, from extended just intonation to 88 equal-divisions of the octave and everything in between.
2) Re-map the keyboard, left can be right, high can be low; pitches need not be in order.

All compositions from 2011 & 2012, and recorded using Modartt’s Pianoteq.

Berlin based, ‘piano poet’ Federico Albanese took inspiration from the brief transitional state between day and night, writing a collection of chamber-music miniatures that withdraw, explore, yet assert their laconic melodies all the more decisively. The emotions to which Albanese has given expression in his thirteen compositions have been articulated with well-considered gestures.   

Equally well-considered is the choice of instruments that Federico Albanese deploys on ‘The Blue Hour’. Piano and synthesizers are joined by a cello, magnified by over-dubbing and sound effects that culminate into a little chamber orchestra, which swells the acoustics while checking the dominance of a clear solo voice. Albanese esteems the Gesamtklang, the overall sound image, with its mixture of compositional precision and dreamlike fluidity. For this reason, the pieces are recorded from start to finish on analogue equipment, further enhancing the warmth of their sound. In ‘Céline’ we hear a discreet beat, scarcely perceptible, a gentle pulse that lends structure without jeopardizing the charm of ‘The Blue Hour’.

During the 90's he expands his creative activity collaborating with prestigious artists like Bill Laswell, Mick Harris, Toshinori Kondo, Russell Mills, DJ Olive, Jah Wobble, Thomas Fehlmann, Markus Stokhausen, Harold Budd, Nils Petter Molvaer and many others. Also known for scoring movie soundtracks for the Academy Award winner director Gabriele Salvatores. In 2008 he founded RareNoise Records, a new label based in London aiming to produce a wide range
of cutting edge music. He produced and published countless albums in his career. He has two bands Obake and Metallic Taste Of Blood. Currently working on new projects.
