Platinum Rye January New Music

Recorded in just six days at Brighton Electric in September 2010, As The Spirit Wanes will be released in the UK on January 31st, 2011. Whilst from the outside last year has looked rosy for Codes In The Clouds with a remix album release, successful tours and festival slots, it’s also been a difficult year behind the scenes. Yet personal loss has proven a collective driving force, bringing the band closer as a group and shaping their surprisingly optimistic second offering:

“It’s not that the album has a set concept or theme, it’s just that each member of the band went through similar experiences around the same sort of time. So naturally, this is reflected in the album. We all feel really close to it, and it’s definitely the music we want to make. It’s a very personal record to us and we feel it’s a big step forward from the first release. The songs are definitely a better reflection of us as a collective of people. Hopefully others will identify with the ideas within the record and can relate it to their own experiences.” 

Co-produced by Erased Tapes initiator Robert Raths and label mate Ryan West, then mastered by Nils Frahm at his studio in Berlin, As The Spirit Wanes could almost be described as a family affair. Even the artwork has been inspired by the band’s time in Iceland, performing as part of the Erased Tapes label night at Iceland Airwaves 2010. Most importantly, it’s all about songs with As The Spirit Wanes offering its listener stunning melodies and razor-sharp hooks. From the Beach Boys pop appeal of Look Back, Look Up to the euphoric Washington, down to the emotionally charged two-minute hymn If I’d Have Known This Was The Last, Codes In The Clouds embody their genre in its most rewarding form.

Jacaszek's "Elegia" is taken from 'SMM: Context,' the first in a series of SMM-focused compilations featuring exclusive content from hand-picked artists. SMM is an unknown acronym used to evaporate the already-unspooling musical boundaries between classical minimalism, electronic and drone composition, film soundtracks, and fragile imaginary landscapes.  

NOTE: The 2xLP version is a limited edition of 800 units and comes in a 4-panel gatefold “tip-on” vinyl jacket (thick and heavy), 180 gram vinyl, and includes inner art sleeves. It weighs approximately 1.9 lbs.

“No click tracks, no headphones, and no film. Just the spontaneity of performance and the sound of musicians hearing, connecting and responding.” 

‘Entanglement’, the debut album by Michael Price fulfils his long-term desire to explore new musical territories, featuring Michael on the piano, with the addition of cello, soprano voice, string orchestra, modular synth, tape effects and electronics.

Throughout the record you will hear street sounds from 'Budapest' captured and processed on Michael’s mobile phone, as well as chamber music recorded direct to tape with vintage microphones in single takes. Album track ‘The Attachment’ was partly recorded onto a 1940s magnetic disc recorder, which immediately connected the piece back to a pre-digital musical age.

The cello and soprano vocal parts throughout the album were written specifically and directly for cellist Peter Gregson and vocalist Ashley Knight, whose expressive voice features on tracks ‘Maitri‘ and ‘The Uncertainly Principle‘. The lyrics for both songs are Japanese poetry sung in English, dealing with age, loss and the inevitable fading of beauty.

‘Entanglement’ was written over a period of two years on paper and by hand with Michael exploring oldest and newest technology at Abbey Road Studios and Snap Studios in London, before most of the recording and mixing took place at Vox-Ton in Berlin.

“I wanted to make an album that sounded like a dark, Berlin record store discovery from the 30s. Something that had timeless emotive power, and pre-digital rawness. Something that I hope would make a deeper connection in superficially networked times. I think there is a duty for artists to be honest, and vulnerable. Because then there is a possibility of real connection. Entanglement is both honest and vulnerable and to go through the two year process of writing, refining and recording an album has been more intense and more beautiful than I could have possibly imagined.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK: Resembling the inter-connecting parts, the cover art for ‘Entanglement’ was created by South London artist Supermundane, with the packaging’s layout done by long-term Erased Tapes-collaborator Torsten Posselt at FELD in Berlin.

Following the success of their debut single ‘Infatuation’, London based Liu Bei announce the 'GOODNESS' EP, out Feb 2nd 2015 via the newly founded Museumgoer Records.

The EP follows a successful 2014 that saw the band release their first single via Transgressive Records imprint paradYse to universal critical acclaim, as well as opening for Dry the River on their autumn UK tour. In 2015 Liu Bei will once again be gracing the stage with a string of live dates kicking off in Oxford on 3rd February 2015 (see tour dates below).

​Liu Bei (pronounced Lou Bay and named after a truly exceptional Chinese Warlord) create gloriously addictive and epic music. The 'Goodness' EP showcases three new tracks, perfectly melding shoegazey energy with moments of ethereal delicacy, all tied together with effortless melodic hooks. Full of shimmers and bite, and littered with heartstring plucking lyrics, the songs are delivered with a ferocious intensity, both on record and in a live setting. Being musical companions and label mates for years, it was just a matter of time until modern contemporaries Peter Broderick and Nils Frahm would start their first standalone project together.

Oliveray was born in their shared home city of Berlin and will see its debut release Wonders – a nice little collection of eight musical pieces – available on Vinyl/Digital via Erased Tapes and on CD via Japanese friends Cote Labo from December 12th, 2011.

I am super excited to announce the debut release from a project very dear to me!
Oliveray consists of me, Peter Ray Broderick, and one of my greatest friends in the world, the incredible musician / producer Nils Oliver Frahm. We’ve been collaborating in many ways these past couple years and traveling a lot together. Now finally we have arrived with our first truly 50/50 collaboration effort entitled Wonders.
It all started when I was asked to create a cover version for my great friends Efterklang. I asked Nils if he’d like to work with me on the project. So one day we got together in his studio and ran through the song (Harmonics) a couple times and then laid it down to tape in the most relaxed way possible – me playing the guitar and singing and him on the piano… We were both really happy and inspired with how easy and fun this process was. We thought you could hear and feel that relaxed atmosphere in the song.
So when our Japanese friends Cote Labo asked us to prepare some kind of release for our Japan tour, me and Nils set aside a couple days to record some music in a similar manner. Without much preconception we just set up the mics and started recording, with an aim to create a short album of half instrumentals, half vocal-based songs. We ran through a few fresh musical ideas that each of us had, improvising along with each other, sometimes just improvising entirely. And before we new it we had a nice little collection of eight intimate pieces of music.
The first official output of what will hopefully be a lifelong collaboration, Wonders feels really special to me. Here comes Oliveray!

CONTENT &amp; CONTEXT:

The British Expeditionary Force, short The B.E.F., was formed in 2007 by Northerners Aid Burrows, Justin Lockey and his brother James Lockey. Whilst their trademark indie-electronica marriage ‘Chapter One: A Long Way From Home’ was solely created via email, the long-awaited sequel ‘Chapter Two: Konstellation Neu’ was recorded in one room, with two drummers and mad professors on synthesisers contributing to an even broader sonic palette. A sound that producer and ex-Yourcodenameis:milo mastermind Justin Lockey likes to describe as ‘prog rock, innit’. ‘The tactic we've used is the 'more' method. More sounds, more layers, more people. More face to face, more angles, more songs. If we've done our sums right, it should total more than the individual pieces’, explains singer Aid Burrows. 

When reading through Aid’s song by song dissection of lyrical content, it’s hard not to feel the sentiment: ‘This one is a slight extension on the diagnosis of one of my nan’s slip into Alzheimer’s. It was written down on a little piece of paper from the psychological evaluation: 'pleasantly confused, not oriented to time, place and person'. Or in other words, she's probably right in step with the rest of us.’

‘This album is inspired by late night explorations and arguments, the random inputs of the internet, and some slippery tip of the tongue ideas that can't completely be grasped or nailed like the tenacious whack-a-moles’, adds Justin Lockey. So here we are. It’s the year 2012. And it’s time to ‘Roll on Chapter Two...’(NME)

2015 saw BBC 6 Music radio presenter Mary Anne Hobbs stage an Erased Tapes evening featuring Nils Frahm and A Winged Victory For The Sullen at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the prestigious BBC Prom.
