Mano Le Tough - Primative People (Tale Of Us Remix)

This track started as a beautiful short piano solo from Tom Hodge. I wanted to keep the focus firmly on the piano and just introduce some subtle electronic elements, while looping Tom's short sections to give a full arrangement.

The percussive clicks came from a visit to Manchester when I played at WHP. The day after a friend was kind enough to offer us free tickets to see Manchester United play Fulham in the FA cup, so I brought my binaural mics along to capture the sound of the huge crowd. I'm not quite ready to introduce huge crowd cheering noises into my tracks (maybe the EDM career can begin next year), but I found that even when the sound of the crowd was cut down to little fragments using Monolake's Granulator, they still had a nice quality. So the percussion on this track are made from the sound of Old Trafford, and there are some points in the track (right at the end for example) where I open the release a little and you can here some crowd coming through.

Containing five synthesiser-led pieces, ‘Loon’ was recorded in autumn 2014 across five days at Nils’s Durton Studio in Berlin, and continues on from the ambient sounds of ‘Stare’ but with the addition of more percussive elements and dub influences. For this new EP the duo wired an Oberheim 4 Voice and a Korg PS3100 to the mixing desk and performed live takes on both instruments. With all four hands on its pots, all mixes were recorded straight onto 2-track ½-inch tape.

Like on ‘Stare’, their first collaborative affair in 2012, they simply followed what was laying in front of them, and this time they were driven by some new synths, a kick drum and tape effects. Indulging in dub, the tracks where all performed rather than engineered, with Ólafur riding a few elements on faders and Nils bringing effects in and out. After running several mixes, they went for the five strongest moments from this session. The release was announced on a joint website www.arnaldsfrahm.com together with the launch of an intimate 45-minute studio film titled ‘Trance Frendz’, featuring another seven improvisations.

mein freund und mitbewohner frithjof merkt in regelmaeszigen abstaenden an, dass er nicht verstehen wuerde, warum ich “nur noch techno” hoere. als ausgleich dafuer, dass meistens eines meiner mobilen endgeraete das klinkenende des klinke-cinch kabels belegt und von da aus trancetechno durch die kueche schickt, passt er dann montage oder dienstage ab, in denen ich mehr oder minder regungslos 37 stunden in meinem bett liege, um seinerseits in “muss-die-decke-ueber-die-ohren-ziehen-lautstaerke” etwas abzuspielen, das boese zungen schon mal als “schrecklichen ethno-house” bezeichnet haben. absatz.

julian hat mir offensichtlich am 28.01.2012 eine e-mail geschrieben in der es um das zweite reich und schoen festival ging. aus unerfindlichen gruenden wird mir diese bestaendig in jedweden e-mail-suchen angezeigt, ohne dass die suchbegriffe in der mail vorkommen wuerden. seine karriere, auch in cahoots mit seinem partner in crime “okaxy” jedenfalls, ist seitdem steil verlaufen. auf facebook sieht man sie auf berggipfeln – auf welche sie das, was sie selbst als ketapop bezeichnen, gebracht hat – ballonhosen und ponchos tragen, diese gottverdammten hippies.

dieser ketapop ragt qualitativ montags, aehnlich der gipfel aus dem suedamerikanischen smog, aus der kueche heraus. sehr weit bewegen kann ich mich deswegen zwar noch nicht, aber ich dreh mich zumindest auf den bauch und starre eine weile an die wand, statt an die decke.

The Story before: 

When i heard the Album Trance Frendz of Olafur Arnalds & Nils Frahm for the first time, i directly felt a connection to the song they both started together at 00:26. The fine textures of the synths and the subtle evolution in this one-taker brought up the idea of having a version i can play in the late nights on the dance floor but which also would work perfectly for listening in your comfort zone. 

The drums and way of how the remix should flow came naturally and as i had the song standing i layered the original stems here and there to have the track playing in some kind of canon. As i was very happy with my personal version i sent it out to https://soundcloud.com/olafur-arnalds, https://soundcloud.com/erasedtapes & the rest of the participants of this project. Gladly Olafur picked up my remix and forwarded the song to the label which lead to having this unofficial version approved to share with you out there. I hope you like it and thanks to Erased Tapes and all involved for the support :)
