Abbas Kiarostami - Close - Up - Final Scene

Following on from her highly acclaimed 'Ett' lp on Editions Mego Klara Lewis presents 4 new works which further her signature explorations of field recordings, electronics, rhythm, sound and atmosphere. Here Lewis exemplifies her uncanny ability to harness the world outside in order to reconstruct and re-present this as amorphous musical matter.  These 4 new tracks exude a certain ambiguity where standard signposts such as rhythm, ambience, texture, light and dark remain as elusive as they are present. Whilst bypassing passive or photographic representation of the source material these works withhold a strong emotional quality resulting in a confident and at times brutal musical manifestation.  As suggested by the title, Msuic resides in a zone at once familiar and slightly off kilter, a world of Lewis' devising in which the listener is warmly encouraged to enter and explore. Msuic is another superb collection of music as fantastic matter.

Atlanta’s Lyonnais returns with its second LP, strangling the expansive highs and narcotic lows of its 2011 debut full length for Hoss Records into a more rhythmic affair. The quartet, featuring members TJ Blake (drums, also of Lotus Plaza) and Lee Tesche (guitars, also of Algiers), Farzad Modhaddam (bass, synths), and Farbod Kokabi (guitar, vocals), parallel the frostbitten modes of This Heat and Clan of Xymox. 



“Pavilionism,” the unflinching opening transmission from Anatomy of the Image eschews any formal attempt at inauguration. Its purpose rather? A succinct 6-minute palate cleanser granting listeners left standing to permeate in a collection of spectral and skeletal drone-punk groovers.



Produced and mixed in the dog days of a Los Angeles county summer by Ale Cohen (Pharaohs, Languis), using sessions recorded at Brooklyn’s Rumpus Room with the recording/engineering team of R. Mexico (Hoss Records, Mexcellent) and Ryan Rasheed (Leblaze, Prefuse 73), Anatomy of the Image stands a singular statement on the anxiety of self.



The stirring, moonlit gospel “Vienna Circles” is a liable force of nature, driven by a not-so-subtle sense of desperation. “Friendly Fires” sees Section 25’s classic offering of modern warfare reworked and reappraised, stretching its post-punk canons into a breathless ambiance. The original’s strident rhythm section remains, now existing in a vacuum co-inhabited by Playing With Fire-era Spacemen 3.



In “Hyperblues” we find Anatomy’s linchpin. A romanticized, sympathetic listening; an arresting dream-pop epic exploring a trapdoor in the void. Apprehension, repentance, resolve—the ultimate human condition as defined by the anatomy of the image.

It’s that time again… Every summer Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant imprint celebrates another ground-breaking year with a far-reaching collection.

Ranging from palpitating ambience to chuggernaut technoid trips; the stirring 16 track set features late night creations from old friends (Red Axes, Zombies In Miami, Mike Simonetti, Moscoman) new friends (Simple Symmetry, Perel, Julian Stetter, ) and friends that have been Correspondant kindred spirits since day one, but have never had the opportunity to cast their magic on the label… Until now (Black Merlin, MR TC, Yula Kasp & Mi.ro).

As always, the vibe is deep, smoldering, emotive, innovative and unapologetically cosmic as we’re pushed headfirst into Correspondant’s boundary-less soundscape. From the coiled spring funk of Javi Redondo’s ‘Fictional Friendship’ to the hypnotic harmonics and trippy vocal textures of Uriah Klapter’s ‘Breeze’ via the slinky arpeggiated charm of Marvin & Guy’s ‘Cowboy Disco’, it’s another sublime excursion from one of the most consistent and considered imprints on the left side of techno.

روزی که سکانس رو کاملا اتفاقی شروع کردم، تصمیم گرفتم که یک پرونده کامل درباره "عباس کیارستمی" بسازم. ابتدا قرار شد که این پرونده از قسمت دوم شروع بشه ولی به دلیل حجم بالای بررسی و مطالعه‌ای که نیاز داشت کمی به تعویق انداختم تا به اپیزود چهارم رسید.

سکانس چهارم، اولین قسمت از پرونده عباس کیارستمی است که به نحوه فیلمساز شدن او پرداخته و دو فیلم از فیلم‌های اول او به نام "نان و کوچه" و "مسافر" نیز بررسی شده است. 

این پرونده حاصل ساعت‌ها مطالعه، دیدن و شنیدن است و فقط از صداهای موجود عباس کیارستمی یا سخنان مربوط به او استفاده شده است.

EXCLUSIVE Chloé 'Through the Bells'

Without a doubt Permanent Vacation's eponymous compilation, which is released every other year, not only marks the musical ending of every second calendar year but is a highlight to any music-enthusiast's record collection as well as a proper track- or dance floor potpourri of music for any DJ. With the fifth compilation Permanent Vacation remains true to its sound yet reinvents itself by giving emerging and established artists a platform to share their current musical approaches. Multi-talented Chloé certainly belongs to the latter named as the Parisian has contributed several musical pieces in various ways to the electronic music scene and a wider audience. As the label-founder of Lumiere Noire Records she recently compiled its anniversary compilation to now present her latest track 'Through the Bells' on Permanent Vacation 5. The track is built just around what the title suggests: bell-sounds. Starting off with a multi-layered bassline and shallow 80s influenced chords Chloé implements the track-carrying and looped bell-element after that unfolds a hypnotic effect through its monotony which the producer skillfully breaks open by partly replacing the effaced chords, giving them more space and strike up a symbiosis with the first occurring and newly placed bell-sounds. Therefore 'Through the Bells' is an ongoing dancefloor relationship that swaps sounds but not the love for its intention to surprise and fascinate the audience, the listeners of Chloé's music.

Permanent Vacation 5 will be released November 23rd.

EXCLUSIVE: Chloé - Through The Bells [Permanent Vacation]

Having the opportunity to remix one of Max’s tracks from his latest album was a real honour. The attention to detail and the warmth he brings to his productions are something that we’ve always aspired towards. We decided to work with Lovesong as we connected with the track’s reflective nature, the beautiful warmth and space the main prophet part brings to the track.  The hardest thing with the remix was to not overcomplicate or distract from this main synth. We really wanted to add live drums to keep it warm and organic, but then bring the electronic elements together for added depth and texture. We also worked on some simple warped piano and glock counter melodies to bridge the gap between the acoustic and electronic sounds.

Composer and drummer of Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi, releases his debut album for Erased Tapes on May 3rd. 'Teenages' captures the sound of electronics living, breathing and mutating of their own accord – almost autonomously – with only subtle, sparing but perfectly-judged and masterful guidance.

This album is one singular synergy between Qasim and his machine within a broader milieu of sound, also explored by contemporaries Sarah Davachi, Alessandro Cortini, Caterina Barbieri and also the forefather, Morton Subotnick. At points tonal, textural and rhythmic, over six evolving and growing audio organisms, the album flourishes upwards in stages, from initial micro-sonics to something bigger, brighter and anthemic.

With 'Teenages', Naqvi summoned all the material on an analog modular synthesizer – a voltage-controlled sound generating system comprised of multiple modules. Naqvi built this synth over the course of two years and amassed a collection of works for this album. The album chronicles both Naqvi’s understanding of writing for this type of instrument and the growth of the instrument itself:

“I started with just a few modules. And naturally things had to be layered and pieced together but as the synthesiser and its components grew over time, I was able to create broader and more complex strokes in the moment. And by the time I got to ‘Teenages’, it was possible to create a robust, large-scale piece spontaneously. This is very much an experiential album for me because it was borne out of my direct experience of learning the instrument. And as the synthesiser grew over time with more components, it matured. At times I felt like it was even rebelling against my instructions or surprising me with what felt like its own choices. When everything was finished and I was thinking about track titles, this idea of artificial intelligence came into my head; a machine that reacts to your impulses and is capable of giving you something different from what you ask, and even defying you. It felt like different stages of growth and adolescence, and that lead to the album title, ‘Teenages’.”

Deeply rewarding on close listening, Naqvi has created an inspiring and synapse-stimulating new masterwork, within the analogue/modular cannon.
