Space Whale Orchestra is an improvisational chamber music ensemble sown and grown in Philadelphia, PA. Drawn together over a love of collective improvisation and sonic experimentation, the group continues to explore the borders of music and the meaning of freedom, always striving to keep their sound new and evolving. 

A decade of improvising and researching together has created an unparalleled sensitivity and musical empathy amongst the core members of the group.  SWO continues to strive for a cohesive and ever-changing sound that candidly highlights the unique personalities and varied musical influences of each individual player.

Bennett Kuhn is a Philadelphia-based music producer, writer, teaching artist, community organizer, and co-owner of the Philadelphia/Brooklyn-based record label @AstroNautico (est. 2009). 

He is musician-in-residency at the Synapsis journal of health humanities at Columbia University and a co-organizer of Philadelphia-based Creative Resilience Collective, a multidisciplinary network of artists, technologists, designers, care providers,  academics, and others working with and for underserved populations in Philadelphia to improve access to quality mental health care.

Sisters Leah and Chloe Smith founded Rising Appalachia on their back porch in Georgia, playing simple fiddle and banjo melodies and leaning into their families rich musical traditions. It has since become a globally recognized Americana and world folk ensemble, celebrating a unique blend of Southern-rooted music, storytelling, and community. The band features David Brown (bass, guitar), Duncan Wickel (fiddle, cello), and Biko Casini (percussion), and infuses music with a unique tapestry of Appalachian, Irish and traditional influence but stays connected to simple songwriting. Rising Appalachia has captivated audiences for nearly 2 decades, from busking in New Orleans to touring Europe, and has been featured at prestigious venues like Red Rocks, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Woodford Folk Fest. Their performances at NPR's Tiny Desk and Preservation Jazz Hall have solidified their status in the folk music scene. Breaking industry norms, the band's approach to music is as much an artistic statement as it is a movement, culminating in their newest album, 'Folk and Anchor' a carefully curated collection of cover songs. This project includes remakes from Bob Dylan to James Blake, Erykah Badu to Beyonce and showcases their eclectic style, inviting listeners into a rich musical journey.

Erica Corbo is a professional musician and performance artist native to the Philadelphia area. Implementing her talents mainly on the piano, she also performs as a flutist, vocalist, and dancer. Her work spans the disciplines of jazz, free improv, and original music. Her first solo album of original compositions, I, America, was released in 2017. Erica plays with and manages the free improvisation ensemble Space Whale Orchestra.  She produces her own monthly concert series called Warp Factor 9.  She has worked extensively with the Philadelphia Jazz Project, Take It Away Dance, and the Impermanent Society of Philadelphia.  The ultimate goal of Erica’s art is to unify varying music genres, artistic disciplines, and people.
