The first Xiu Xiu full length on Graveface is an 11 song Nina Simone covers album featuring some incredible musicians: Ches Smith, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Mary Halvorson, Andrea Parkins and Jamie Stewart of course. From Jamie: “The idea came being back stage in Austin TX, opening for Swans and feeling like I did not play well. Michael Gira and I had the night before talked about our mutual love for Nina Simone and how her intensity and crazy political truthfulness always pushed us to try harder. After watching the Swans that night and knowing the difficult ups and downs of their history and now their epic and beautiful persistence, they made me want to try harder as well. Nina Simone’s singing is way over my head and while I was back stage feeling like i blew it that night, hearing the swans be amazing and thinking of Nina made me want to not give up. The idea came from wanting to honor her, challenge myself to be better than I think I can be and to say thank you to music. Ches Smith is the only person i know who could understand this in his heart and also handle the technical side of fearlessly reorienting such wonderful music.”

XIU XIU - Stupid in the Dark (Kid606 Radio Remix)

“Transsexuals are the stormtroopers of the future.” So says Genesis P-Orridge, the iconic, visionary musician who has fronted influential bands like Psychic TV and Throbbing Gristle. While P-Orridge isn’t transgender — they* call themselves a pandrogyne — their partner in this Talkhouse Music Podcast, Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, came out as transgender in 2012. Still, as P-Orridge points out, both musicians have done something very brave: they’ve transitioned, in one way or another, in front of their audience. And it was P-Orridge who paved the way. As Grace says here, “Someone like yourself is so important to me.”

P-Orridge and Grace might hail from different generations, countries and musical communities, but they found plenty to talk about: what it was like to transition in public, the mind-body duality, paranormal phenomena, the perennial bathroom problem, the perennnial airport screening problem, courage, death, Caitlyn Jenner, a hilarious exchange about what to wear on stage, dealing with photographers who want you to show your boobs, and what P-Orridge calls “a gradual shift in the way that gender and sexuality are perceived in our species.”

This is one of the more fascinating and potentially visionary exchanges we’ve ever had on the Talkhouse Podcast. It’s also one of the more risqué, so if you’re easily offended, maybe you’ll want to check out one of our other podcasts.

The sound effects are only there to help the listener visualize the "game". I'm looking to do other 80s songs in this style as well (with accompanying videos). Enjoy!

I first worked with John Cage when I was 19, in the premiere performances of Cage's Lecture On The Weather. It was first performed early 1976 at York University in Toronto, Canada, where I was studying electronic music and composition, and later that same year in Buffalo, NY. This began an ongoing series of meetings throughout the 1980s, where I would visit the composer in his New York apartment to talk, play chess, and sit with him while he worked. He was also interested in seeing scores of my own music and was a source of encouragement in my youthful days.

The John Cage Variety Show is an ongoing project of mine. For his 100th birthday I thought a Big Band would be appropriate. I invited a wide variety of new music musicians to each perform a solo interpretation of one or more of Cage’s works, spanning from the early 1940s through to some of his final pieces. Although performed as solos, these pieces are performed simultaneously, with each performer working from their own timeline of when to play and when to tacet. The musicians have specifically been asked to not interact with what others are doing, thus creating a totally Cagean event where sounds are allowed to interact on their own, separate from the will of the performers.
