Machinations

These tracks were created for my wife, Cathy Highet, when she was working a very stressful job and having a lot of trouble "turning off" her brain to go to sleep. They are designed to provide a balance between stimulation and calm. 

The first two "Sleep Concerts" were burned to cd in a repeating pattern. The excerpts from the Linked Grooves are assembled from a cd that I created with 99 tracks, each 20-45 seconds long, and each containing a repeating sequence or a transition between sequences. The entire piece is 48 minutes, and was limited by the number of tracks I could create with the software.

This was the beginning of a new phase of sound organization for me, and I have really enjoyed the challenge of making "useful" ambient sound works. 

Current work extends from this and has used more instrumental sounds, as I was having difficulty transforming my found sounds in the ways that I wanted. The newly created "Sleep Concert #3" was performed April 14, 2012 and edited into the current version. I was in the middle of figuring out how to use Ableton Live when Cathy came into the room, lay down on the floor, and insisted that I record what I was doing and make it into a CD for her. So I did.

These tracks are all explorations I have made over the past 25 years involving repetition of sounds and motifs, as well as the role of attention and expectation in creating perceptual organization.

My current work is focused on the role of slow modulations in creating a calm but stimulating environment. This has led to experimentation with more "musical" instruments and sounds such as the electric bass and digital versions of old-school analog synths like Arturia's excellent version of the Moog Modular.
