The Univac Index
The Univac Index is the 15 year running experimental collaboration between univac and Peter Washburn (aka: Index). Index has lately been exploring the idea of building instruments that are played with minimal physical exertion. To this end he has build a mind controlled synthesizer interface which allows him to simply lie back and make beautiful music. This instrument is made of a pulseOx sensor combined with a skin conductance sensor attached to the fingers of his hand. The data is transformed into MIDI events which are expressed through custom patches in Native Instruments’ Reaktor.

These tracks are all explorations I have made over the past 25 years involving repetition of sounds and motifs, as well as the role of attention and expectation in creating perceptual organization.

My current work is focused on the role of slow modulations in creating a calm but stimulating environment. This has led to experimentation with more "musical" instruments and sounds such as the electric bass and digital versions of old-school analog synths like Arturia's excellent version of the Moog Modular.
