InnerDisc Radio 001: Alex From Tokyo

Since the beginning of this year (2022) I’ve been experimenting with durational performances, in the spirit of the NYC minimalists and performance artists of the 70’s. The concerts have been called 8 Hours or 8 Minutes, a sort of joke referring to the perception of time, but a critique of the standard 8-hour workday/40 hour work week. 

The pieces in this playlist were recorded live during a concert I gave on November 27th, 2022 from 15:00 - 23:00. They are a collection of 3 original compositions and 2 by other composers (Ann Southam and Hugh Shrapnel) whose pieces I do my own take on. The tracks are time stamped in the spirit of LaMonte Young. The visuals during the performance were created by Annika Kappner. 

To perform for such a long stretch of time on a single instrument (a Prophet 12 and Strymon Volante) is both physically and mentally demanding. It requires a shift in perspective and to get there I followed the advice of a good friend: To approach playing not as a mountain climb, but as a love affair. Leaping off the cliff from this foundational understanding, the performances are not tests of endurance, but deep inner journeys, explorations of love and awareness witnessed in a public setting. I liken it to riding a wave: a swelling of emotion which is palpable in the room, building gradually over the eight hours I perform.

Joey Anderson remains committed to the deep rooted sensibilities of House music, it's very much in his DNA - drawing upon influences from the underground of New York city. Over the years he has released some of the most influential records in the genre - EP's on the likes of Latency, Syncrophone Recordings and Deconstruct - albums on the likes of Dekmantel and Avenue 66.

This month marks the release of a new album on Deeptrax.

His sound has always been cemented in a deep, philosophical energy. It's music as much for listening, ambience and mood as it is the dancefloor.

Over the years his music has gone on to reach critical acclaim and gained international recognition but it is his home city and the origins of the musical culture from which he draws strength, not the hype or social media circus.

Not one to dabble in eccentricities his music is stripped back, utilising uniquely programmed machinery to create delicate textures and weird dusty tones which often lead to a unique transcendence.

Joey is an artist we've been keen to feature in this series for a long time now and the result is just as special as we could have imagined...

Joey Anderson: The Ransom Note Mix

MURMULLOS (WHISPERS) is a sound art piece that is a part of a proposal for the dissemination of the testimonial volume of the Final Report of the Truth Commission in the context of the Colombian armed conflict. 

Composed of nine interconnected parts, this work presents a 3D audio sound narrative that evokes both the fragilized beauty and resilience of natural landscapes affected by violence.

B3NJO, hailing from Khon Kaen, Thailand, digs up music from all corners of the world for the right pieces to transmit her ideas about life, humanity and her awareness of femininity. Underground electronica, experimental beats, dubstep, and more are the ingredients for her blend of harmony, rhythm and vitality taking the listener to a divine state of bliss and beauty.
