Introducing The Armory, a new weekly podcast from San Francisco DJ, Zach Moore (The RIPEcast, Gough Street Sessions). Featuring an arsenal of world class DJs from San Francisco and beyond, The Armory Podcast reloads each and every Friday with exclusive mixes from the biggest names in breakbeat and house. In our very first episode 2012 Breakspoll winner, Mafia Kiss (aka Paul Baron), wastes no time kicking down the door and setting The Armory ablaze, but there is a method to his madness. "I was sent the artwork for the Armory Podcast and was told by Zach to think '80's arcade machine', says Mr. Baron. "So that stuck in my head and I wanted the mix to play along with that, hence the deeper, darker mix. I've tried to make it feel like you're completing level after level in a video game with the track selection. Make sure you're looking at the artwork at the end of the mix, too. Trust me. It will make sense!"

The Armory will also showcase the talents of renowned illustrator, Jem Panufnik. “My artwork for The Armory takes its cue from those classic back-lit, sci-fi, shoot-em-up, ‘80s-stlye video arcade game signs, which I love", says Panufnik. "When he commissioned me, Zach explained how The Armory was about the old analogy of DJ battle weapons, dancefloor bombs etc, and it seemed a great way to show that when the DJ pulls his trigger/fader finger it’s an arsenal of sirens, squeaks, bleeps and ear-splitting analogue booms that does the damage. Really looking forward to the series!”

Mafia Kiss, the award-winning bass/breaks producer, has dominated the breaks charts of Juno, Track It Down & Beatport with releases on labels such as Rat Records, LOT49, Sunday Best Recordings, Digital Records, Sub Slayers & has recently signed to Stanton Warriors infamous label Punks. DJ、音楽誌「FLOOR」編集長。1999年よりプロデューサーとしてのキャリアをスタート。2005年よりDJを開始。現在は「LiLiTH」のレジデントDJとして、都内主要クラブを中心に、「FUJIROCK FESTIVAL」や「BIG BEACH FESTIVAL」といった野外フェスティバルなどに出演。また、多くの話題を集めた「ULTRA JAPAN2014」や「StarFes’14」のフロア・プロデュースにも携わる。さらに「JAPAN FASHION WEEK」「VOGUE FASHION’S NIGHT OUT」といったファッション系イベントから東京国際映画祭などの文化系パーティまで、幅広く活動してきた。DJとして、また音楽エディターとして、世界中のフェスティバルやパーティを巡り、最先端のシーンで得たものを音楽やメディアを通して表現している。その中でもNYのレーベル「WOLF+LAMB」が世界的に展開しているショウケース“CREW LOVE”の音楽性を承継した、現在進行形のハウスミュージックを奏でる、揺るぎないスタイルを確立している。


-インタビュー-

-このミックスはどちらでどのように制作されたのですか？
自宅で録音しました。使用した機材もシンプルでPioneerのCD-J2000 NEXUSとUSB、TechnicsのターンテーブルSL1200MK-3、ミキサーはPioneerのDJM900nexusを使用し、TASCAM DR-05で録音しました。 ケーブルは、OYAIDEです。


-このミックスのコンセプトがあれば教えて下さい。

このミックスに限ったことではないのですが、僕の音楽スタイルは、NYのハウスDJのSOUL CLAPとWOLF+LAMBに影響を承けています。この５年間、世界中で行われている彼らのレーベルショーケース『CREW LOVE』に足を運び、それと同時にWOLF+LAMBとSoul Clap Records所属アーティストを日本に招聘して自分たちのパーティ『LiLiTH』を開催してきました。そういった彼らとの活動を通してこのスタイルを身につけ、いまでは彼らにCREW LOVE Far Eastの称号をもらいました。
ジャンル的には、ディープハウス。でセクシーなのが絶対条件。でもチャラくならないように、アンダーグラウンドな質感はキープしてますね。ボトムがしっかりしていて腰で踊れる、オンナの子がセクシーに踊りだしちゃうような感じ（笑）そんなフロア最高でしょ？あとフィナーレに向かうに連れて『CREW LOVE』特有の独特な高揚感を描くことを意識しました。


-最近の活動を教えてください。

今年でDJ活動10目ということもあるので、虎視眈々と仕掛けを練っています。今年は難しいかもしれないけど『CREW LOVE』を日本にもってくることや、自分のショーケースをプランニングしています。近々では、渋谷のクラブWOMBの15周年アニバーサリーとファッションブランドのEMODAの５周年アニバーサリーパーティ、それとRed Bull Air RaceでもDJします。

Piano is from an old hardcore, well maybe you'd call it an old hardtrance track i used to play from 1994 - Timo Mass, Final XS, It was one of those melodies that just stuck in your head so i thought i'd give it a 2011 twist !!!

This past March marked listed's annual pilgrimage to Miami for a melee of musical magic that is Winter Music Conference, the centerpiece of which was once again Friday morning's annual Freaky Tikki boat cruise, an intimate 150 person dawn to lunch time affair. After each delivered incredible performances in 2011, <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/dannyhowellsdj">Danny Howells</A> and <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cassy-Britton/207845458637"> Cassy</A> returned to the decks, this time deepening their collaboration with an impromptu four hour B2B tag-team extravaganza that followed an oh-so-smooth, steady build <A HREF="http://www.electronicgroove.com/EG335Dory.php">opening set</A> by listed resident <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/djd0ry">Dory</A>.

<A HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0rxWhVGoZw&hd=1">Sensitive as ever to the environment and vibe</A>, Danny and Cassy laid down a blissful set of classic summertime house music. Bouncy basslines bopping along like butterflies across the beach, with festive flourishes of filtered funk and gravy-smooth grooves greeting the sunshine, carrying an all too merry crowd along for the ride, <A HREF="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151245453723623.529308.10116133622&type=3">whilst immersed in good company and stellar sound.</A>

The duo's impressive longevity and musical range were on full display as they seamlessly mixed fresh sounds with some tasty vintage selections, digging deeper (as Danny does) all the way back to classics like the Salt City Orchestra's 1998 remix of the Sneaker Pimps "Post-Modern Sleaze" (2hrs38mins) or Global Communication's 1996 "The Way" (2hrs57mins), led by new favorites like Marcus Homm's "Keyframe Signal" (36min) and blending perfectly into modern classics like Dan Ghenacia and Shonky's newly minted "Close to the Edge" (3hrs6mins).  All in all, an amazing auditory adventure and a real treat for those lucky enough to find themselves aboard.
