Knowing the Enemy – a concerto for bagpipes and ipad

It is always good to know your enemy, and the bagpipes have had more than most. From medieval monks to piano accordions, functional harmony to plain common sense, the bagpipes have outlasted them all. Today’s enemy is technology, and to pitch it against our pipes we brought in veteran producer RK AKA the Doctor, with his current weapon of choice, the ipad. 

The rules were simple, 8 rounds, only sounds made specifically by ipad music apps or bagpipes, NO SAMPLES, and may the best music win. The ipad wore the colours of the cold hand of technologisation; the bagpipes, the warm heart of humanity. Naturally both sides played a little dirty as there was a lot at stake, but it the end it was a foregone conclusion, and to celebrate our inevitable victory we invited rock guitarist Schosti Kriwaczek to play a solo on one note for the final number.

If we’re honest, we’re not sure we really like all of the results, but this was a fight that needed to be waged, of that none of us had any doubt.

A chamber-opera for baritone, bagpipes, electric guitar and occasional concertina.

For this part of the Saddest Bagpipes in the World series we invited punk provocateur, the Rev. Rohan K. to see what his brand of theatrical anarchy could do with the bagpipes. And we were not disappointed! Insisting on working with his son, rock guitarist Schosti Kriwaczek, in the cheapskate home studio in his bedroom, he created this mini chamber-opera portraying, as he puts it, a “manic episode”. The music veers from folk and blues to full-on punk rock, but still the bagpipes always find their rightful place.

The Saddest Bagpipes in the World - part four - Sourlies

In August 2014 I set out for Sourlies bothy, in deepest Knoydart, with my son, Schosti, and, of course, the Saddest Bagpipes in the World. This was a pilgrimage, completing a journey aborted 20 years earlier due to an oncoming blizzard; a journey I had promised Schosti since he was twenty minutes old. For five days we took in the magnificence of Knoydart, playing music (there was a bothy guitar), telling tales, and most of all, watching the ever-changing landscape. These are the tunes we brought back with us – our humble tribute to the Scottish Hills, or perhaps their gift to us.

This album is dedicated to Wee Martyn, king of the pipers, Rory the mountain-runner, and Jason, wild goat of a fiddler – long may the myths and the music live on…
