Erik Pedurand and his musicians have crafted an exclusive tribute to Eugene Mona, the defining symbol of the traditional music of Martinique in the 1970s.
Nicknamed “Neg Doubout,” Mona, flautist/singer, was known as a conscientious objector and activist, advocating for Creole identity and recognition. It was only after his death in 1991 that the singer entered into the collective consciousness as an iconic guardian and keeper of Caribbean tradition.
By revisiting the repertoire of the “Barefoot Man,” Erik and his musicians have succeeded in redefining its forms while respecting its Belè roots. Rich in its universal appeal, laced with afrobeats and infused with electronic elements, “Tribute to Mona” reinterprets the most famous songs of Eugene Mona: Bwa Brilé, Ti milo, and Bidon Dachine. A worthy homage to a bittersweet musical dissident who finds in this innovative fusion a new audience.
