Category 4 is a monthly broadcast concept from Michael Brunner [ @four4 ] for Great Circles Radio.

Each episode is broken into four segments, which are connected in some fashion, but routinely unique in many others. This allows for the drawing of comparisons between otherwise disparate concepts, while simultaneously creating enough creative restrictions to focus the musical selections.

The 15th episode comes to us courtesy of Grant Aaron (@insideout), founder of Mysteries of the Deep (@mysteriesofthedeep).

We invite our listeners to guess these categories during the show.
As an added incentive for participation, the first person to guess the categories during the broadcast will be eligible to win a prize. Each month brings new categories and prizes.

Under both of his aliases—Widow for deep, atmospheric techno and Cicada for mostly longform ambient compositions—multimedia artist and writer @widowbeats specializes in telling stories and building complex, layered cinematic worlds. At Monument Magazine, and as a founder of Studio 72 & Provoke (a party series alongside A.M.D in NYC), he helps explore and elevate the stories of other artists, too. His mix for Spontaneous Affinity is musical world-building at its best, driven by subtle percussion, expansive textures, and a sense of mystery.

"This mix can be considered a direct representation of my artistry as a whole: Deep, Dark, Mysterious, Absolute.
All in all, it can be considered organized chaos.

Even though the main bulk of the recording is from mixing on a normal 2 channel Pioneer controller. You’ll hear a lot of atmospherics that was also mixed in via my audio workstation."

Here is the ninth chapter of our podcast series, a new story told by @dj-heartbreak-berlin, committed record digger and music journalist based in Berlin.

For this episode, he wanted to refer to the classic tape format, therefore he imagined a two-sided mix. This meticulous blend of selected findings and oddities, features both the gloomy vibes and the hypnotic grooves that define Futurepast for him.

The first part takes you from the chilly shores of white noise and dramatic strings to the more electric and rhythmic lands of IDM and electronica. The second part is a progressive buildup of dub atmospheres and experimental beats, all finely sewed together to transport you in an alternative time.
