Stockholm-based composer and musician Linus Hillborg has an interest in compositional techniques born out of limited computing power and sample memory. Residue is a collection of weird, darkened and solitary sounds derived from such practices, including soundtracks and ambiences from early bootleg games - heavy on FM-synthesis, repurposed samples and microtonality - as well as music of past presents and future pasts constructed in a similar vein.

"Like entering a palatial hall of mirrors, LXV’s A Screen Memory opens with a baroque, choral synthesis. There are seraphs atop gilded plinths, chandeliers overhead. You’re ushered through an ornate, jeweled backdoor, and outside, it’s a beautiful bright day. Down a mossy path the calm patter of rain begins. A brook gurgles. There are voices too, though indiscernible. You arrive at a well brimming with crystalline data. But then a fog descends from behind. And down you go.

The place you arrive in appears familiar, but something is off. Strange transmissions travel the air. Anomalies all around. Paradox reigns. Notions such as backwards and forwards lose meaning as do sender and receiver. The landscape is littered with softwares, broken bells. Looking up, there, some things in the shrouded distance: sonic objects, unidentified, glowing, you squint to get a good look, but before you can comprehend, the brain change concludes, and your paranoia turns to coursing pleasure.

fmvee joins Queeste with who do u love?, an EP of fractious songs recorded over a tumultuous four-month period in Los Angeles. Having debuted in 2018 with a set of club contortions touching on jungle and 2-step, the US artist returns with a work of intense self-reflection. Lived experiences are transmuted into an amorphous bricolage of pummelling kicks, synthetic textures, and diaristic details, what they describe as an act of “remembrance.”

Working and living in LA, the “grind” alongside “aspirational partying,” and the confrontation of depression during an intense relationship, informs the EP on levels both sonic and thematic. The slippery rhythm and melodic stabs of ‘the way you see yourself’ embodies a state of flux, also recalling the early experiments of the LA beat scene. Distant jazz drumming fills its peaceful coda before ‘everythingUneverKnewUwanted’ introduces an echo lifted directly from the artist’s life: a trickling courtyard fountain. This first phase of the release finds resolution with ‘thewayothersseeyou,’ a conceptual mirror to its start, and one which carries a notable shift in tone; gleaming percussion has given way to ominous synths.

Despite the EP’s personal nature, collaboration is crucial. ‘Seed Perfuming (LoLo v665)’ is an fmvee original transformed into a cascading breakbeat by New York producer and engineer Loric Sih AKA LoLo, an ecstatic yet familiar form nestled amidst otherwise bruising encounters. ‘sobbing’ follows, a digital-age ballad of original lyrics exploring dependency: emotional, physical, and otherwise. It’s a poignant conclusion to an appropriately hallucinogenic collection, an intoxicating chemistry of love and loneliness conjured through a fine balance of bass, percussion, discord, and harmony.

On behalf of fmvee, a percentage of all profits will be donated to Baltimore Harm Reduction Coalition, a community-based organisation that mobilises community members for the health, dignity, and safety of people targeted by the war on drugs and anti sex-worker policies.

Digital Sketch For Strings
One morning I had an idea for a string composition. The tonal colors of the strings would be constantly morphing between shifting intonations. A rising and falling spectrum of many different sonorities would construct a throbbing, living whole. The gestural and perceptive qualities of the stringed accumulation would exist somewhere between glacial and in constant motion. I ended up using saw waves instead of string samples or acoustic instruments, as I found the harmonics of a saw wave helped achieve what I was hearing in my head that morning.

Spectral Masking Room Construction
A work exploring onset partials on audio perception and spectral masking. I started with a woodblock sample. For me, the woodblock's harsh yet beautiful striking sound is complex. The short burst acts as an extremely salient and trepidatious sonic cue. After listening for hours to a single strike and performing in-depth spectral analysis, I began to hear and comprehend the strike’s intricate material composite as extending beyond its short temporal life. The burst started to exist as an impulse response. With each strike, information about the space in which the woodblock’s material existed for the recording was communicated. The room in which the wood was struck was just as much a part of the sonic material being heard as the wooden material colliding with one another. Synthesizing the woodblock sound from scratch turned into a minute study of individual partial’s attack and decay times. I used the results of spectral analysis and composed around the initial short strike. The pitches comprising the fundamentals and overtones in the sample were extracted in various clusters and used to create a few different digital synths. The timing structure of the sampled and synthesized strikes are controlled by a simple counting transform. By doing so I set conceptual throughlines for the variants of struck sounds. The many variations of partials being highlighted or sent to the audio background serve to imitate “fake” spaces in which these sounds exist and convey subtle architectural information to the listener.
