"Mississippi Holler" draws on melodies from negro spirituals, based on recordings from the Mississippi State Penitentiary made by Alan Lomax between 1947-48. The extended techniques in the strings emulate the natural dissonances and variations found in the human voice, communicating the raw emotion of the songs.
