ESA’s Earth Explorer Aeolus satellite was launched in August 2018 on a trailblazing mission to show how profiling Earth’s winds from space can improve weather forecasts and climate models. Marking the end of Aeolus’ remarkable mission, ESA worked with composer Jamie Perera to create a woodwind piece from data that spanned the lifetime of the satellite’s life in orbit around Earth.

In the resulting orchestral piece, every second is a day in the life of Aeolus, with data represented by the following instruments: 
Piccolo: Rayleigh Top Altitude (the tops of clouds)  
Flute: Rayleigh Observation Type (density of clouds)
Oboe: Rayleigh Reference Temperature (wind temperature)
Clarinet 1: Rayleigh Wind Velocity (wind velocity)
Clarinet 2: Rayleigh Wind Reference Pressure (air pressure)  
Bassoon/Bass Clarinet: Rayleigh Bottom Altitude (Earth’s surface)
Ambient Synth: Validity Flag 0 (Aeolus downtime)
You can also hear landmark events such as volcanic eruptions represented by drums, hurricanes represented by wind sound effects, and the Coronavirus pandemic represented by a pulsing synth.

Écouter, c’est toujours un peu agrandir le monde. C’est recueillir des traces, accueillir l’inattendu, tisser des présences. Mais c’est aussi garder la mémoire des instants fugaces de ce qui bruisse, bat, résonne et se transforme.

Le 15 février à 19h, Phaune Radio ouvre encore une fenêtre sur des éclats d’ici et d’ailleurs : des battements d’ailes, des chants vibrants, des souffles et des frémissements, des lignes de forces, des mélodies éphémères et bientôt disparues.

À l’occasion des 20 ans de Sonatura, Grégoire Chauvot et Mélia Roger ont rassemblé ces instants de vie saisis par les membres de l’association. Chaque enregistrement, une empreinte sonore, un fragment de paysage vivant qui, en nous, continue d’évoluer.
Un cadeau inédit qu’ils nous font pour un bel anniversaire.

On February 15 at 7 PM, Phaune Radio opens another window onto fragments from near and far: the beating of wings, vibrant songs, breaths and tremors, lines of force, ephemeral melodies soon to vanish.

To celebrate Sonatura’s 20th anniversary, Grégoire Chauvot and Mélia Roger have gathered these moments of life, captured by members of the association. Each recording is a sonic imprint, a fragment of a living landscape that continues to evolve within us.

Faitiche is delighted to present a new album by Andrew Pekler: Sounds From Phantom Islands brings together ten tracks created over the last three years for the interactive website Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas. With his 2016 album Tristes Tropiques, Pekler created a highly unique cosmos of ethnographic sound speculations. Sounds From Phantom Islands continues and simultaneously expands this concept: finely elaborated chordal motifs float like fog over fictional maritime landscapes. A masterpiece of contemporary Exotica.

Phantom islands are islands that appeared on historical maps but never actually existed. The status of these artefacts of European colonial expansion from the 15th to the 19th century oscillates between cartographic fact and maritime fiction. Sounds From Phantom Islands interprets and presents these imaginations as a quasi-ethnographic catalog of music and synthetic field recordings. The pieces on this album are based on recordings made for Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas, an online interactive map developed with cultural anthropologist Stefanie Kiwi Menrath.
