Sarjan is one of those DJ’s who consistently flex’s his ability to pull tunes from all corners of the dance music spectrum. His mixes flow through various soundscapes and genres, never conforming himself to one style. His recent mix for the Cycles best displays this talent, as he journeys through atmospheric IDM and Dancehall, shifting to weighty DnB and punchy Hardcore bangers.

@threadsradio affiliate DJ Narkus runs a monthly show / music platform called Escape the Chaos. He discusses and engages with differing themes and theoretical ideas in sound, music, and art.

For this mix, the South London based DJ explores some of his older and more recent favourites; consisting of moody, droney atmospheres and explosive, glitchy sounds. Shifting through Trip-Hop, IDM, Jungle, Tech-Step, 100 bpm and even a bit of breakcore, he engages with the current fast, and energetic clubby vibes that he enjoys the most.

Platforms is principled on championing rising talent in the London music scene, alongside some of the best DJs London has to offer. Putting the unexplored and misrepresented into the spotlight, Platforms’ identity is strongly situated in creating a positive community feeling. So far the Corsica based club night has collaborated with the likes of Vandelay, All Centre and more.

Escape the Chaos #3 DJ Narkus b2b Fiesta Soundsystem (Plaistow Flex Out) - 01-Mar-22

The 4th episode in the series features London based DJ, Gribs.

Gribs first caught our eye back in early Feb, where she played at a party thrown by Eel Disc. On the night she delivered a captivating set, quickly and effortless moving through different textures, sounds and tempos. It’s this unique style and sound, where Gribs shines as a DJ. Her ability to mix a sporadic range of different rhythms and sounds in a coherent manner leaves every mix a satisfying yet engrossing experience.

Escape The Chaos #4 Gribs & DJ Narkus - 29-Mar-22

The 5th edition of the Escape the Chaos show features a full takeover by  Sasha Stoned.

From only stepping behind the decks a few months ago, Sasha has quickly developed an exciting-energetic sound, unique to her own infatuation with the dancefloor. Playing her first event back in May organised by the London based DJ school 'Mix Nights,' she has swiftly acquired a keen taste for riling up the dancefloor.

As a close friend and a long time supporter of my own musical endeavours, I'm really proud and excited to have had her taking over the 5th edition of the show. For the takeover, Sasha has provided an aggressive and rowdy mix, serving as a fantastic radio debut.

The 8th edition of the Escape the Chaos show featured E3P.

E3P has been absolutely tearing it up in the Sydney club circuit, going from strength to strength.

They prepared a hectic hour of energetic percussion and glitchy club music for the show. Listen back to hear the mix in second hour.

Escape the Chaos #11: DJ Narkus (*South East London) - 30-May-23

The 12th show featured London-based DJ and Hard.Drive co-head Nymphetamine.

As one of the co-heads of Hard.Drive Vicki aka Nymphetamine is responsible for curating an event series that’s both forward-thinking and refreshing. After throwing a very successful third event last month, featuring a synthesis of tantalising live performances, installations and DJ sets—it’s an exciting prospect of where they’ll push the event next.

On top of their talents for curation, Vicki is also more than adept behind the decks. For the show, they’ve put together an hour mix full of moody motifs—a variety of atmospheric drones, heavy bass lines and intricate breaks. Lock into the second hour to hear their mix.

For the first hour, to compliment the soaring temperatures, DJ Narkus put together a sweltering mix of Dub, Breakcore and IDM.

Escape the Chaos #14: Halloween Mixtape (*Plaistow) - 25-Oct-23

Back in December, I had footwork aficionado DJ Strawberry guest on the show. DJ Strawberry's approach to the genre, holds a refreshing aura within the wave of 160 and ghetto tech producers, who tend to miss the mark in the realm of footwork.
DJ Strawberry's attentive and natural approach to building intricate drum patterns, with an added flavour of hypnotic sound design, provides a new and exciting voice in the genre.

After establishing himself with an LP released on the Polish label, Outlines, DJ Strawberry will follow up with a brand-new 5 track album titled 'Beyond' dropping on March 15th. You can pre-order via Bandcamp here: https://outlineslabel.bandcamp.com/album/beyond

For the show, DJ Strawberry has put together 50 minutes of frenetic 200bpm madness. For the first 55 minutes, DJ Narkus glides through some IDM/DNB hybrids before a serene finale of dub techno.

Escape the Chaos #16:  En Cor & DJ Narkus (*Lewisham) - 06-Feb-24

For April's show, I decided to put together a mix featuring music that has either derived from or drawn influence from India. The mix comprises music from artists of Indian heritage or artists who have been influenced by aspects of Indian culture and philosophy. 

I found India to have an almost subtle, yet very prevalent influence in music history. While there are more prominent and easily identifiable facets of Indian music culture i.e. the sitar or the musical stardom of Bollywood, it also holds very indirect and philosophical influences, that feel more discreet yet equally as important. 

While singular lineage in tracing the evolution of music cultures and genres is often a fallacy, it can't be disputed that Indian culture has had a huge impact on drone music. Raga, the improvisational technique developed from Indian classical music is a prevalent precursor to drone music. The renowned Indian classical musician Pandit Pran Nath, through his teachings of Raga is arguably a forefather to drone music. Pran Nath had a huge influence on contemporary minimalist composition, with noteworthy disciples such as Terry Riley, Catherine Christer Hennix and La Monte Young. His influences even reached Jazz music through his teachings to musicians such as Don Cherry and Lee Konitz. 

India also had quite an influence on Jazz music through other means, specifically in a religious and spiritual sense. I'm primarily referring to the post-modern jazz movement that came to be known as 'Spiritual Jazz'. In John Coltrane's latter years, he had a spiritual awakening which led him down to a new path within his music. He started to incorporate influences from religious texts and philosophies into his music. Among those, there were strong influences from Hinduism, such as the sacred text of the Bhagavad Gita. What resulted in John Coltrane's awakening and connection with these religious philosophies, is an array of mystical and powerful jazz albums. Alice Coltrane arguably took these principles to greater lengths, with a greater focus on incorporating Indian classical music into jazz, as well as Hindu philosophy and spirituality. Alice took a long pilgrimage to India, which is said to be a huge inspiration for her music. This can be heard in some of her albums, such as Journey In Satchidananda and Universal Consciousness. Alice's dance with India's philosophical and spiritual elements, as well as classical musical devices, resulted in a very iconic and unique sound in the free jazz movement.

I'm sure there are further influences that are worth exploring and unearthing. In this mix, I tried to reference a small snapshot of the principled ideas that hold within these influences.
