Premiered here, Kraak & Smaak’s brilliant take on Asha’s 1973’s “Lies” honours the original by keeping almost all the main elements – the crying guitar solo, for instance, had to be taken away but for a good reason: The acclaimed Dutch trio aimed at the stars for their remix and decided to deliver a more cosmic interpretation. It’s undoubtedly an outcome that will please not only the fans of this visionary artist but also the ones who will get familiar with her outstanding work from now on.

Following on from previous releases, Make Me Rich and their cover of Fergie's Glamorous, Japanese-Belgian duo AILI continue to ignore their bank balance and explore the finer things in life with new single Fashion. A somewhat tongue-in-cheek tribute to the strange world of haute couture, Fashion sees Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters deliver another playful electro-pop number, this time adding traditional Japanese string instrument, the koto, to their banks of synths and Aili's deadpan vocals. https://soundcloud.com/ailimakesmusic 

Built around an unhurried groove and hypnotic Kosmiche bass line, camera-flash like bursts of melody all come together to provide the perfect backdrop for Maruyama to explore the Japanese relationship to fashion. Something that anyone who has taken a walk around Tokyo's famed Harajuku district, or developed a taste for raw selvedge denim produced in the Okayama prefecture, will know they can take remarkably seriously. 

As Maruyama sings, this time entirely in Japanese, that's even reflected in the language used to describe how you wear different items of clothing. 'Japanese uses different verbs that mean 'to wear' depending on what you're talking about,' she says. 'For example, unlike Dutch, Japanese has the verb "kaburu" for items you wear on your head as opposed to "kiru" for anything you cover your upper body with.'

Accompanying the single the band produced a video that captures the joyful and surreal nature of both the band and the fashion world itself. Serving up their best catwalk looks, a paint splattered Maruyama and Wouters take turns modelling everything from shirts made from salad leaves, to lemon glasses, grape earrings, green pea necklaces and more. 'Fashion may be taken seriously but that doesn't mean it needs to be serious,' Maruyama says. 'The video is a treat for the senses, one that hopefully will make you smile and your mouth water at the same time.'

So there you have it, if you start to see kids on Brussels' Rue Dansaert dressed in trousers made from witloof in the coming months at least you'll now know who to blame.

Bursting onto the scene in 2021 with their acclaimed debut EP, Dansu, Aili Maruyama and Orson Wouters have continually defied expectations as they playfully blend leftfield pop with underground electronic sounds. Having recently just returned from playing their first live shows in Japan, where they also collaborated with Nariaki Obukuro and Yaffle's TOKA creative company, Fashion is the first hint of what's to come from the band's debut album, set for release on Eskimo Recordings in 2024.

Belgian-Japanese duo Aili return this November with the irresistible electro-pop of Babychan, the second single taken from their forthcoming debut album. Where previous releases have seen the band sing about fashion, dancing, money and pillow fights, Babychan sees Aili Maruyama & Orson Wouters finally tackle one of pop's biggest subjects, love. As we've come to expect from them though, Babychan is not your usual love song.
"This is our first love song (and the only love song on the album)," explains Maruyama. "It’s about the first phase of a relationship when you’re completely absorbed by LOVE. We directly translated Dutch idioms into Japanese sentences. We don’t know if those sayings are correct, but we hope people will understand us. This might be confusing, but that’s what love is all about."
Perfectly capturing that heady overwhelming experience, you'll find no heartfelt pianos, acoustic guitar or plaintive yearning here rather Babychan is another joyous explosion of sound, from looping acidic bleeps and lazer sharp synth to rattling percussion, all topped off by Aili's distinctive vocals.
Making their debut in 2021 with the critically acclaimed Dansu EP, Maruyama and Wouters have quickly established themselves as one of Belgium’s most exciting new acts. Signed to Eskimo Recordings the band have spent much of the past six months in the studio working on their hotly anticipated debut album, due for release in early 2024.

Ahead of the release of their much-anticipated debut album, Nandakke?, Belgian-Japanese duo Aili serve up a brand new single, Tako Yaki. Named after the Japanese street food, Tako Yaki continues Aili Maruyama & Orson Wouters' hot streak of irresistible songs, marrying new wave funk rhythms and sparkling electro-pop to Maruyama's distinctive vocals and surreal storytelling.
Like the rest of the new album Tako Yaki is sung in the unique version of Japanese that Maruyama and her father created to stay connected when she left Tokyo for Europe aged seven. But if you're wondering what it all means Maruyama is on hand to explain.

“On the Japanese side of my family, some family members have surprisingly large big toes," she confides. "We used to call these toes takoyaki after the Japanese dish because they resembled it!"

Oyayubi wa takoyaki! Toe or takoyaki! Seems obvious really, and if that's made you hungry then you're in luck as Tako Yaki also features a guest appearance from Aili's dad as he lists off his own takoyaki recipe which, for those who want to try this at home, you'll need octopus, flour, dashi, and an egg. Making their debut with the critically acclaimed Dansu EP, Maruyama and Wouters quickly established themselves as one of Belgium’s most exciting new acts. Just when you thought you had Kasper Bjørke figured out he comes back with another great musical surprise. 

The new album Puzzles, which will be released April 5th on hfn music, is no exception. It follows two recent collaborative EPs on Live At Robert Johnson and Mule Musiq as well as his second Kasper Bjørke Quartet neoclassical ambient album Mother on Kompakt.

Conversations features Systur (aka Sísý Ey) on vocals and is the first single to be revealed from Puzzles and the song immediately grabs you with its slinky groove and gorgeous melody. 

Reminiscent of a great lost Fleetwood Mac tune which would feel equally at home in your living room or on any discerning modern dancefloor. 
The pairing of Icelandic dream-folk trio Systur’s beautiful vocals and harmonies, along with the track Kasper created a perfect match. The bass is played by Tomas Høffding (WhoMadeWho), one of Kaspers regular collaborators. Kasper has also previously worked together with the Icelandic sibling trio on the song Apart which was released in 2014 on Kasper´s album After Forever where the remix by Michael Mayer since became a dancefloor evergreen.

Recorded over the course of six months in Orson's studio, packed full of vintage synths, Nandakke? captures the spontaneous spirit and creativity of those sessions. Exchanging riffs and rhythms, bouncing sounds and samples off each other, Aili and Orson would let the music take them where it wanted. The result, an album full of wild ideas and bold, playful experimentation.

More than anything an exhilarating feeling of discovery courses through Nandakke?, leaving you never sure where it will go next. One minute a pulsing electro-pop number featuring Aili's dad discussing his takoyaki (battered octopus) recipe, the next an explosive high energy workout song like Up & Down.

Certainly Aili was surprised to find herself singing in her own unique version of Japanese again.

"I thought that I was done with that after our debut EP, but apparently not as I speak even more Japanese on the album!" said Maruyama. "Every time we were in the studio these words would just tumble out. It's a complicated language but I just love to play with it.

“In many ways I'm an outsider, I left Tokyo aged 7, so there's a lot I notice as someone who is not a native speaker and it doesn't always make sense, there’s a lot of mistakes in it. But in a way that sums up the whole philosophy of the album and how Orson and I work together.”

That notion of duality, a sense of belonging but feeling apart, of being between two worlds and inventing your own captures the spirit of Nandakke?, itself a Japanese word that roughly translates to "Well, what was it?".

"It's something you say when you're looking for a word, like you know it but have forgotten how to say it. That's literally how I communicate with my dad the whole time," Maruyama explains. "The main feeling I have when I go to Japan is that I know the language, I can speak it, but part of me still feels like it doesn't have all the vocabulary. There’s a gap there that nandakke has always filled for me. All the lyrics come from that place, that seven-year old trying to speak Japanese."

Whether Aili’s singing about the language she invented with her father over the years to bridge the gap between them (Nandakke?), the idiosyncratic Japanese relationship to fashion (Fashion) or riffing on children’s playground songs (Yubikiri) the result is a remarkable album that defies easy categorisation.

Bursting onto the Belgian scene in 2021 with their acclaimed debut EP, Dansu, its lead track spent 8 consecutive weeks at the #1 spot of Radio 1’s VOX list and saw the band nominated for Studio Brussel’s De Nieuwe Lichting (‘New Generation’) award. Since then Aili have appeared playing live on the Belgian TV show Roomies, been tipped by the likes of Rolling Stone, become regulars on tastemaker stations like KEXP and KCRW in the US and Nova in France, toured across Europe and, just recently, played their first sell out shows in Japan.
