From Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas to up and coming acts like Atella and Cavego it’s fair to say Eskimo Recordings are pretty well known for championing the cosmic sounds of Nordic Disco. On their latest track finding trip to Scandinavia though the Belgium label have returned with something with its eye less focused on the stars and more on… well cars, definitely cars. “All electric, no gas.”

‘Drive’ the new single from Norwegian producers Tarjei Nygård & Stockhaus, featuring the unmistakable vocals of 80s electro legend The Egyptian Lover, is nothing less than an unabashed 808 driven, low end anthem. From its abrupt bass stabs and robotic percussion to its even more robotic vocoders ‘Drive’ is the kind of track that will have you digging out your old lino and poppin’ & lockin’ with the best of them.

Starting life as an instrumental, recorded when Stockhaus and Nygård spent a stormy night in the studio laying down new tracks, the pair knew they had something good on their hands but still felt like the track was just missing a certain something. Or rather a certain someone, as years before the pair had hung out with The Egyptian Lover at Nygård’s NuMusic Festival and really who could be better for the job?

As luck would have it Nygård was set to be in LA for work a few years later and what’s more the man behind the classic ‘Egypt, Egypt’ was not only in town but loved the track. All that was left to do was quickly book the legendary Skip Saylor Studios (where the likes of Ice-T and Guns N’ Roses had recorded in the past) and get that jam in the bag.

The end result? A timeless, chrome plated, fuel injected electro-bass track, complete with two ‘Club’ mixes where Nygård’s poked his head under the hood, given the track a spot of extra fine-tuning and thrown in some neon under-lighting for good measure. The perfect soundtrack whether you’re cruising around town in your low-rider or attempting an ill-advised head spin or human caterpillar in the club.

‘Drive’ also marks a welcome return to Eskimo Recordings for Tarjei Nygård who, as well as releasing singles on labels such as Prins Thomas’ Full Pupp and Lovefingers’ ESP Institute, previously featured on Eskimo’s ‘The Orange Collection’ compilation with the timeless track ‘Flog’. For Stockhaus meanwhile ‘Drive’ marks his debut on the label and is, remarkably, his 1st single of the year, a nice change of pace after he set himself, and completed, the task of releasing 100 songs in 2019. Maybe he knew something we didn’t.

One of the most vibrant and interesting records released in 2021 Belgian-Japanese artist Aili’s debut EP 'Dansu', recorded with fellow Belgian Transistorcake, caught the music industry’s attention with its bricolage of Kosmiche Musik, Acid House, Electronica, Disco & Leftfield Pop. Now as clubs across the world begin to reopen Eskimo Recordings have brought in South Korean DJ & producer Shubostar to give, 'Pari Pari', one of the EP’s standout tracks a fresh rub for the nighttime crew.

Whilst the original floated by in an otherworldly haze, Shubostar anchors her remix of the track with a pulsating Italo bass line, four/four kick drum and the kind of massive gated snares that will be familiar to anyone who caught the Mexico based producer's contribution to Eskimo’s recent 'Next Wave Acid Punx' compilation.

Introducing a scratchy disco guitar riff and washes of synths Shubostar creates the perfect vehicle for Aili’s vocals."Aili's unaffected, almost naive singing touched my heart, before her Japanese lyrics brought me right back to my childhood. That plus the tracks’s dramatic synthesizers sound gave me lots of ideas,” explains Shubostar.

With more to come soon from the young Belgian-Japanese artist, Shubostar's remix perfectly complements the original’s neon lit pop, perfect for dancing the night away before heading home to once more revisit Aili’s startling debut.

Aili x Transistorcake - Pari Pari (Shubostar Remix - Edit)

Released earlier this summer, ‘What You Need’, the third collaboration between longstanding Eskimo DJ/producer George Bakalakos AKA NTEIBINT & fellow Athenian Matina Sous Peau was a beautiful echo of 70s disco, a sound that Italian producer Spiller has now brought to the fore with his new remix.

Most famous for his massive 2000 hit ‘Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)’, Spiller has proven himself to be equally adept at crafting underground club classics over the years and with this remix the Italian producer has expertly wielded his scalpel, cutting and looping the track & snatches of the vocals to create a taut, disco-house number.

Understated but undeniably funky, Spiller’s remix of ‘What You Need’ is the perfect track for when you just need to lock the crowd into a hypnotic groove and let them do their thing, perfect for both mirror ball lit dance floors and roller discos alike.

“This song got us through puberty,” explains Maruyama, “and whilst we were recording the new EP and needed a break we decided to play around with it as a kind of challenge and loved how it sounded. Keeping things nice and sleazy Parisian producer Simon Says covers English synth-pop band Blancmange's 1982 album track 'Feel Me'. Transforming the song into the kind of outrageously funky slice new wave disco that could have sat proudly on an old Ze Records compilation its low slung groove is now sure to soundtrack as many illicit 'Cinq a Sept' assignations as it is sweaty dancefloor moments. The Saqqara EP is a multilayered, sonic canvas from the mind of Chris Barratt, as he launches his new alias, Barratt, for Life and Death. Fine brushstrokes move from all areas of his musical hideout, spreading over five, varied, aural sculptures, each one warping and weaving on its own cosmic trajectory. Pooling from key aspects of his Eagles & Butterflies project, Barratt induces new musical shades, hinting at moments of disco and funk, through a lens of psychedelia. 

The title track is a late-night floor-filler - a bold yet uniquely personal necropolis built from riveting delays and arpeggiators. Time Bending sees DJ Tennis join in, stepping up with his trademark, rough around the edges production aesthetic, en route to unknown destinations. Barratt hones-in on a confident, stripped-down style on Khaos - rhythm versus melody -  just in time for festival season. 1983 soundtracks a ride to utopia on a rocket-fueled Vespa, leading to Collider, the land of un-quantised madness, where the most treasured of synthesisers live amongst their drum machine counterparts. 

Flowing yet incredibly interconnected, Saqqara is best interpreted as a mini artist album - the first of many Barratt offerings.
