Faroese DJ and producer Brynjolfur is one of the leading lights of the Danish club scene, with energetic performances and a charmingly personal musical style. Having dropped the sun-drenched Chain Glass EP for Hamburg’s hafendisko at the height of the summer, he returns to the label fold once again with the shimmering disco delights of The Save EP.

"The Save" is an instant mash-up hit, combining disco cowbells and shakers, vintage house piano chords and rhythms, with the finely-tuned wispy vocals of synth pop. It hits the ground running, and build towards a big bright house breakdown that combines skilled songwriting with Brynjolfur's clubbier roots. 

"Time" takes an entirely different tack, emerging with a slow, brooding electro stomp at sultry tempo; it blossoms into instrumental track of cinematic proportions and suspense, that shifts into a cosmic-influenced beauty by the track's end.

Two sterling remixes round out the EP package, starting with a Dub Mix of "The Save" that gets it rough and ready for the dancefloor: the distinctive melody takes on a deeper unified tone, and new acid house elements get pushed to the fore; then a Kasper Bjørke remix of "Time" reworks it in the distinctive style of the deep nu-disco master, adding bright, uplifting melodies, but retaining the original track's slow, sultry tempo.

Not that long ago, one had to introduce Llewellyn as Martin Enke’s House- and Disco-bound sideshow to his main-moniker Lake People. That’s kinda obsolete these days, as Llewellyn has been cranking out enough high quality material over the last months to be on everybody’s radar anyway. 

“San Junipero” is already his second proper EP release on Riotvan in less than one year, not counting compilation tracks and remixes. It is the successor to his “The Other Side Of You” EP, the actual “Other Side” so to say, if not his prime moment so far. 

It kicks off with the title track, a straight hitting beat, clap on four, a little roughed up and grainy in sound. But with the introduction of its main synth, it turns into a dancefloor-tied, but widely spaced out Disco jam. Llewellyn credits Riotvan’s own New World, and particularly his track “Mirage” as an inspiration for the synths on “San Junipero”, so cheers to New World and the inner circle synergy! What is totally his own though is the signature ability to blend smooth and thoughtful arranging with an obsession on sound narratives and still a good quota of club functionality.

An approach that easily extends to all his productions, see also “The Light Above You” – an arpeggio driven tune featuring yearning harmonies, piano-highlights and a compelling overall 80ies vibe. 

“Remote Scope” introduces itself on a broken beat and a circling synthbass that gradually comes forward to be one of the main attractions of this rather groove emphasizing track. But still, its percussive patterns repeatedly give way to almost ethereal pad-arrangements placing you right into an emotive rollercoaster.

After all those profound DiscoHouse-leanings, one might expect the ultimate Euro-Disco-finale when led “In The Realms Of Fancy”. But no Fancy-tribute in here, but a beatless affair rich on field recordings and filtered synths, rounding this batch up on a laid back, yet classy note.

Capping what has been another vintage year, nu-disco star Tim Bernhardt, aka Satin Jackets, sees out 2018 in style with 'Lost In Japan', a cover of Canadian star Shawn Mendes' recent mega-hit. Featuring frequent collaborator Niya Wells ('Primordial', 'Never Enough') on vocals, the pair have transformed the pop smash into a smooth slice of late night disco.

"We'd just finished recording our last single together 'Primordial' and were knocking around some new ideas," Tim explains. "We'd talked about doing a cover so Niya played me the new Shawn Mendes single and as soon as I heard her sing it I was sold. It's always interesting to try and put your own spin on someone else's song, especially one that's been as popular as 'Lost In Japan', but I think together we've managed to give it a fresh take." 

Whether producing modern Balearic house anthems such as 'You Make Me Feel Good', seductively soulful tracks like 'Through The Night' or genuine poolside classics like 'For Days', Tim has established himself as one of the biggest names in the modern disco scene clocking up more than 35 million streams of the debut Satin Jackets album, 'Panorama Pacifico', on Spotify alone.

Monte - Close To Me

Five years after his track 'Mr. Croissant Taker' appeared on Soulwax's Grand Theft Auto V radio station, Belgian producer Transistorcake releases his official debut release, the 'Future Plans' EP on Eskimo Recordings. Featuring 4 tracks of hazy electronica that would sit neatly alongside early releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label or recent excursions by the likes of Palmbomen and Betonkust.
 
Opening tracks 'Future Plan I' and 'Future Plan II' sets out Transistorcake's stall nicely. Swirling synth melodies, an ever evolving bassline that leads you down a labyrinthine maze and diaphanous strings and pads all add up to create an ecstatic yet at the same time melancholic quality to the music that manages to sound both ancient and modern.
 
"Future plans I and II are constantly changing routes of ideas, improvisations and coincidences," explains Transistorcake, "nothing is a constant in the two numbers, outside the pulse of the drums. You can see them as two possible versions of the future or as an old version of the future alongside its current variation."
 
Whilst cut from the same cloth as the previous tracks 'Ribbles' has more than a touch of the Nordics to it. Sparkling, playful melodies glitter like snowflakes caught in the flash of a strobe light before a pulsing disco beat rockets the track into the stratosphere. In his own words the track is "an ode to spontaneity and dancing without braking. I pictured it being played by a live band next to a pool at an LA cocktail party in the '80s."
 
Closing the EP we have 'Kluts', driven by a stuttering, head-nodding, rhythm that recalls that rapping sound of a woodpecker in the forest, the track is gently swaddled in a warm embrace of synthetic stings that gradually develops and asserts its dominance over the course of nine, all-too brief as it happens, minutes. For all its gauzy textures there's also an undeniable solidity to these tracks, an underlying organic quality and nostalgic warmth that permeates them. 
 
Having previously studied jazz composition and played in several bands over the years, Transistorcake brings a sense of spontaneity to the often all-to-structured world of electronic music. This EP just capturing a snapshot in time of these songs that can be endlessly reworked and reimagined in his live set, where live bass and drums, are added to his collection of vintage synths to an endless back and forth between man and machine.

Originally released on Eskimo Recordings' 'Yellow Collection', Middle Sky Boom & Eliezer's 'Slow With The Run' has long been a secret weapon for those DJs that like to take a break from the 120bpm bangers and give the dancefloor a bit of space to breathe and get freaky. Now those who have kept the faith are rewarded as Eskimo have dipped into their back catalogue, dug out the parts and invited Swedish producer Paresse and Parisians Il Est Vilaine to rework the track in their own special ways. 

Having impressed with his 'Sloth Machine' EP Stockholm based Paresse is first up to the plate. Keeping the basic structure in tact, Paresse opts to gild the original rather than embark on any wholesale changes. Building his remix around a mesmerising synth loop that he develops and builds upon across 6 minutes, Paresse delivers one of those numbers that locks you into its hypnotic groove and then before you know it your hands are in the air and you're bellowing 'TUNE' at the person sweating away next to you. 

Il Est Vilaine meanwhile rewind Belgian history to a moment long before Eskimo had been born and the lowlands reverberated to the martial beat of EBM and New Beat. Nudging down the tempo, Il Est Villaine pair the original's Arabesque guitar riff with the kind of heavily gated drums and synth arpeggios that would have set the strobes off at Boccaccio in the 80s.
