@lenawillikens version of 'Far Away From A Distance' is as bold as it is fidgety. Driven by a restless bumpy arpeggio - or is it the sound of a bottle pouring its intoxicating liquid to the top edge? - the track takes off for an harum-scarum flight across murky post-industrial lowlands as thwacking claps beat their binary pulse at industrial pace.

SMD - Far Away From A Distance (Lena Willikens Remix) [Delicacies]

Rings Around Saturn (aka Rory McPike, Dan White) presents six minutes of bottomless rave as arpeggiating bass synths suggest 303s without ever going full acid – the bass tone growls for the entirety of the track while syncopated drip drop synths provide the counter melody. Blasts of white noise remind of nightclub smoke machines and alongside manipulated bird calls contributes to the humidity and density of the tracks overall soundscape.

Premiere: Rings Around Saturn – Biological [Analogue Attic]

Sharif Laffrey can charm the snake out of any basket. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. Side A’s 'Tangier' is a long drawn-out exercise, an endurance test of the highest order. Over the span of some thirteen minutes, elements bob and weave intermittently and layers overlap haphazardly—the type of exciting dynamic that's born out of restriction—as if putting down a live jam without enough hands to work the console, yet Sharif perseveres. As touch and go as this arrangement may be, there is something that undoubtedly glues it all in place; the combination of his massive rolling 16th-note baseline and his tough-as-nails drumkit is so good that, upon first listen, we spat out our tea and insisted on its release. On side B, 'Everything Is Nice' carries on with loose arrangement, dirty production and layers of inexplicable spoken-word samples (a Sharif calling card by now) but this time we're lead to a melancholy place, the blue comedown to Side A's antagonistic trial. With his ESP Institute debut, Sharif leaves you mentally unhinged, as if you’ve smoked something interesting and arrived bewildered in some Saharan labyrinth. These two songs will guide you through the medina to score the black meat.

Uabos is a firm favourite here at the Bordello. The Italian has melted hearts and floors with tracks that brim with silken grooves and a raw house energy. For his latest Uabos builds on his past sound while folding new elements into his layered style. “Shadow” is the eponymous introduction, a track that sways between dawn and dusk, light and dark, as it dances between bright addictive keys and twilight tones. That search for contrast is carried into the thick beats of “Egoland”, beats countered by cascading notes that slip and slide from sweetened funk to devil-may-care debauchery. Industrial undercurrents and greying skies arrive with the Chicago inspired fuel that is “Elevator.” The curtain fall comes in the aptly named “Emotion.” A supremely powerful piece of snapping snares, full-bodied bass and cutting keys for a terrific finale for a terrific 12”.

Uabos - Elevator

The huge iron door at the end of the corridor stood ajar. Until today it had been bolted shut with a heavy padlock, unwilling to let outsider eyes in. It must be open for good reason, surely this was an invitation to enter. The corridor was lit by flickering candles that cast eerie shadows across the cobbles, the shapes jostling and moving as if they had a life of their own. As they reached the door they peered around it cautiously. As far as the eye could see tall wooden shelves grew up the walls, each with a metal box meticulously slotted in. Moving closer, they realised each box was embossed with a name; some defiled and some in pristine condition. Their eyes searched the rows quickly before halting a few feet above. There they were, their name slashed through with a thick red line.

Montreal-based duo MSL is the project of Edouard Le & Francis Latreille AKA Priori and half of Jump Source, alongside Project Pablo. For this EP on French blog and label Les Yeux Orange they dive deep into the melodic depths of electro. The whole EP is a certified winner.

Hard at work for over a decade now, EDND is one of those artists whose influence on her local scene rolls deep and yet feels subtle - she's been silently honing her craft surrounded by a healthy mix of VSTs, classic drum machines and second-hand synthesisers of all kinds in her home town of Portimão. She's also never stopped playing a part as an important cultural agitator in the south of Portugal and Lisbon alike, taking part in jam sessions or community-led parties in all sorts of DIY venues, as well as gracing established clubs and festivals with hers and her duo's Roundhouse Kick mesmerising live acts.

For her first solo EP 'Rupture of Plane', EDND finds a fitting home at Paraíso, where she explores the border between inventive experimentation and dancefloor effectiveness. We feature Paraíso regular Photonz, who steps in for a powerful rework of Quartz Composer, infusing it with a tough, whole new broken electro groove and an addictive synth re-design.
