Sharif Laffrey can charm the snake out of any basket. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. Side A’s 'Tangier' is a long drawn-out exercise, an endurance test of the highest order. Over the span of some thirteen minutes, elements bob and weave intermittently and layers overlap haphazardly—the type of exciting dynamic that's born out of restriction—as if putting down a live jam without enough hands to work the console, yet Sharif perseveres. As touch and go as this arrangement may be, there is something that undoubtedly glues it all in place; the combination of his massive rolling 16th-note baseline and his tough-as-nails drumkit is so good that, upon first listen, we spat out our tea and insisted on its release. On side B, 'Everything Is Nice' carries on with loose arrangement, dirty production and layers of inexplicable spoken-word samples (a Sharif calling card by now) but this time we're lead to a melancholy place, the blue comedown to Side A's antagonistic trial. With his ESP Institute debut, Sharif leaves you mentally unhinged, as if you’ve smoked something interesting and arrived bewildered in some Saharan labyrinth. These two songs will guide you through the medina to score the black meat.

Herzel - TWO

Uabos is a firm favourite here at the Bordello. The Italian has melted hearts and floors with tracks that brim with silken grooves and a raw house energy. For his latest Uabos builds on his past sound while folding new elements into his layered style. “Shadow” is the eponymous introduction, a track that sways between dawn and dusk, light and dark, as it dances between bright addictive keys and twilight tones. That search for contrast is carried into the thick beats of “Egoland”, beats countered by cascading notes that slip and slide from sweetened funk to devil-may-care debauchery. Industrial undercurrents and greying skies arrive with the Chicago inspired fuel that is “Elevator.” The curtain fall comes in the aptly named “Emotion.” A supremely powerful piece of snapping snares, full-bodied bass and cutting keys for a terrific finale for a terrific 12”.

Uabos - Elevator

The huge iron door at the end of the corridor stood ajar. Until today it had been bolted shut with a heavy padlock, unwilling to let outsider eyes in. It must be open for good reason, surely this was an invitation to enter. The corridor was lit by flickering candles that cast eerie shadows across the cobbles, the shapes jostling and moving as if they had a life of their own. As they reached the door they peered around it cautiously. As far as the eye could see tall wooden shelves grew up the walls, each with a metal box meticulously slotted in. Moving closer, they realised each box was embossed with a name; some defiled and some in pristine condition. Their eyes searched the rows quickly before halting a few feet above. There they were, their name slashed through with a thick red line.

Montreal-based duo MSL is the project of Edouard Le & Francis Latreille AKA Priori and half of Jump Source, alongside Project Pablo. For this EP on French blog and label Les Yeux Orange they dive deep into the melodic depths of electro. The whole EP is a certified winner.

On May 10, the Luxembourg-born, Brussels-based producer is set to return to Hivern Discs with 'nDSi,' a double EP that finds him taking a more stripped-down approach. Ahead of its release, we debuted the bucolic melodies and machine gallop of "DX6" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

Cleveland "DX6" [First Floor Premiere]

The Chica is one of the Latinoamerican female voices that has been stirring up her heart and voice for several years. The Chica is an exaggeration of reality, a mix, a mutation. She has unleashed her madness in Mendoza's "Porno Party” and other parties such as "Club Sauna" and "Recreo Festival" in Santiago, Chile. Two years ago she released her debut album “Soy Fan” with the DDR label, and last year she also released her second title “Paradancers” through Discos Pato Carlos, on this occasion we are proud to let go and enter deeper in her delirium with her latest release “GRRR”. After dropping his first solo release at the end of 2019, Naranja (@naranjafrom) is back with his second EP. And this time, he embraces even more the italo-disco and EBM influences that were showing through his first project. The a-side features some dark and kicked italo-disco riffs, acid basslines and deep layered synths melodies, where the b-side explores broader sounds, from rave inspired synths to unrestrained braindance beats. In this second effort, Naranja offers to dive in a musical journey, drifting between melancholic synths, 80s inspired basslines, deep FM pads and energetic drum beats.
