Emotional Rescue starts a series of reissues from the Caribbean that will move
minds and feet in equal measure. First up is the mento / ska star Laurel Aitken,
here turning out 2 killer disco reggae jams with the crazily-sought after Sexy
Boogie and a re-edit of Hoochie Coochie Man.

Born in Cuba in 1927, growing up in Jamaica before moving to London in 1960, Laurel Aitken is rightly remembered for the breadth of his musical styles and career, from stand out calypso and mento to killer ska releases for the likes of Blue Beat and on to all forms of reggae.  

Tucked away in a cannon of literally hundreds of Aitken’s recordings is this one off release, the 1978 disco inflicted Hoochie Choochie Man 12”, with the killer Sexy Boogie on the flip.   Long a word of mouth for both reggae and the more leftfield disco diggers, prices have seen recent copies go for well over 3 figure sums.   

All fully licensed and remastered for reissue, here Sexy Boogie is moved to be the rightful main cut.   Some 7 minutes of rolling, twisted disco reggae, with chop guitar, stabbed piano, an essential and relentless (wonky) groove, plus Laurel’s trademark silk tones, here used as a mantra for the dancefloor.  

Now moved to the B side, Hoochie Choochie Man is handed over to Soft Rocks main man Piers Harrison for his editing expertise.   Scapel in hand, the  (oft annoying) vocals are cut to allow the flanged guitar, hammond keys and drum and bass rhythm to just swing and ride to distraction.

For out latest Burek podcast we have a skillfully layered journey into various shades of house from Birmingham based DJ and producer Mark E.
Mark E’s love affair with electronic dance music started when Manchester was Madchester and rave culture swept through England. Later he tasted house at the hands of legends like John Kelly and Frankie Knuckles at Wolverhampton scene, before moving to Birmingham for University where he is still today creating and feeding the club scene.
Mark  is one of those guys who releases at least a few amazing records each year. Now, nearly a decade of releasing music, Mark  has a discography that contains efforts for top-notch labels like Spectral Sound, Running Back, and Golf Channel and his very own imprint Merc.

Mark E has kindly provided us with second part of a triple mix series, mixed as a straight vinyl set at home, accompanied with a few bottles of fine beer and some stuffed animals. Mix also containing first airing of Mark forth-comer on Spectral Sound. BOOM! Enjoy!

Dear listener,
finally this year, I managed to see the man burn!
In the weeks and months before Burning Man a lot of my friends kept on telling me how amazing it was and most of them would conclude their eulogy with something like: „Burning Man changed my life“.
Well, I can not certainly say that Burning Man changed my life, but what I know for sure is that my life changed afterwards ;-)
Very glad that I made it to this far away place and I hope to return next year.
I want to thank Lio and everybody at our nice camp and of course the robots who invited me to let their hearts beat according to my pace. It has been truly amazing. 
The only thing I really had to struggle with, that Sunday morning on the Playa, was the sunlight that made it almost impossible to spot anything on the display, so please please please you geeks out there, come up with something that can work in sunlight, because we all love the sun!

Mark E last delivered on Futureboogie back in November 2014, so it’s a welcome return to the label for the Birmingham based DJ & producer.  With his Merc imprint running on full steam, and previous releases on revered labels like Spectral Sound and Running Back, Mark is becoming an ever dependent exponent of the real and raw house music vibe, and no more so than on the Basement Trax EP.

Basement Trax 1, distorted synths wander over a low-slung beat, the marching hi-hats and filter work are tweaked to perfection.  It’s a track of basic elements, but done so well, the arrangement building steadily and bags of warmth and soul deep at the heart of this track. 

The gnarly bass and classic string sounds of Basement Trax 2 make an ideal companion piece to the A side.  Delivered in the finest wild-pitch tradition, the raw sounding production packs a punch as the stomping drums and repetitive keys ramp up the heat for a real blazer of an underground club cut.

The shopfront looked gloomy and mysterious in the streetlight. Dust sat layered in the windows and no light could be seen from within. The crew of revellers stood eagerly outside the door, a small queue had already begun to form behind them as they waited. Finally at midnight, the bolts were unlatched and it swung open. One at a time they were ushered inside and in the distance they could hear the sound of drums echoing. Below them there was a party underway, deep down in the basement, and they were going there.
