From MR-017 Gina X Performance ”Nice Mover” LP
Medical Records is proud to present the quintessential first album by Gina X Performance. Gina X Performance was composed of the charismatic Gina Kikoine (vocals/lyrics) along with famous German producer/musician Zeus B. Held and backing band. Released in 1978 on various labels including EMI, “Nice Mover” has been out of print on vinyl format since 1980. Zeus B. Held has previously worked with the band Birth Control and has recorded multiple solo albums as well. “Nice Mover” has been an internationally regarded electro/disco record with various tracks appearing on compilations throughout the years (e.g. Andrew Weatherall’s “Nine O’Clock Drop”). The track “No G.D.M.” (a tribute to famous gay actor/writer/personality) was a club hit on both sides of the Atlantic and remains a commonly heard track on better DJ sets to this very day. It is made up of an infectious slow driving disco-esque beat with perfectly aligned and arranged synth accompaniments. Gina’s unmistakable and truly unique vocals and lyrics set this record apart from its contemporaries. Tackling controversial subject matter such as transgenderism, exhibitionism, and other fetishes , this record has left a deep mark on the history of new wave and electro/disco. The title track “Nice Mover” is a cosmic sequenced synth hit and also has appeared on various compilations. The bouncing “Be A Boy” is a high energy dancefloor cutter that illustrates the internal thought processes and daydreams of a female longing to become a male. “Black Sheep” continues this theme and is a very catchy number with bonus sheep sounds to keep it interesting... The closing track “Tropical Comic Strip” starts off with peaceful cricket samples and piano and builds into a bombastic production that is a fitting close to the record. Master recordings provided by Zeus B. Held and remastered by Lafayette Masters, Freiburg. Officially licensed from Mr. Held (KGBeat Productions) directly. This is a seminal work of electro/disco/wave and is essential for fans of late 70’s wave-synth-disco crossover and the like. Original reproduction artwork is preserved on the front (one of the best record covers of the entire scene) and back. A late night voicemail from Cherrystones: “Phone me! I’ve got something killer! It might not make sense at first but it’ll suck you in...”
After hearing the outsider psych of ‘Distant Visions’ we are suitably hooked and the wheels are in motion to reissue the music of Maya from 1975.

It’s at this point we realise we ain’t even heard the A-side yet! Turns out it’s the heaviest heartbreak jam going…

Following on from 2015’s acclaimed Critical Mass compilation, Cherrystones and Touch Sensitive come together again to proudly present a lost masterpiece from the U.S. hard rock and psychedelic underground.

Fully remastered and faithfully reproduced on limited 7inch vinyl with additional insert featuring lyrics and notes from Burk Skyhorse Price (Maya) and Cherrystones.

“In the drying up world of unknown homemade underground rock sounds, there never fails to be at least one scurrying rodent running for cover; bug-eyed under the flashlight of the modern-day sonic adventure seeker. Nearly all the LPs have been brought to the surface. More recently rabid fuzz and loner sound explorers are rubbing elbows with Northern Soul speed-freaks in the deep cold, hour-eating world of coverless 45s to seek out what could be seen as the final frontier of no budget, big dream and no fan base homemade local vulnerable Rock ’n’ Roll.

So what do we have here? A UK discovered and repressed Ohio private nuclear soul bomb by Burk Skyhorse Price with his Maya unit from the shadows of Cincinnati Ohio, in the music-world turmoil years of 1975.

The single has all the ingredients: songs about heartache, bubbling synths, alien feelings, proto-punk, backwards feedback, isolation.

Two lengthy songs of two different moods: “SYNTHEZOID HEARTBREAK” a "Fuck You!” to all partners that want you to join the Real Estate game and turn in your misfired Envelope pedals for a suit and tie; rendered musically in a raging underground punk damage mode.

But I think the small band of freaks that have heard Maya’s lone 45 agree that its the pro-Alien sad dirge of “DISTANT VISIONS" that gets the pen scratching the history books for another legendary entry. This reflective afternoon delay lurker makes me wonder what happened AFTER the fade out to "Visions”. 
Maybe the homemade air siren blew out the studio?
Regardless, here is a big dreaming band that left quite a brief one-two punch to the face of the industry that had no place for their punk and lonely sound poems. Funny but fitting how they have finally found a home forty years later and many continents away. Solid homemade damage here, touching AND sensitive, albeit crushingly loud.”

Maya - Synthezoid Heartbreak

Thunder Tillman is a cosmic vagabond who travels through space and time accompanied by his personal shaman. Together, as if having fallen to Earth, their mission is to recreate the music of their estranged home, reuniting with their brothers and sisters through an exquisite form of storytelling. While Western music may have degenerated over the past 65 years, troopers such as Thunder Tillman continue to drill down toward an elusive core, searching for something holy while never bastardizing their art with insincere advents of technology or convenience—as is apparent throughout their immaculate analogue production on this ESP Institute debut, Jaguar Mirror. Comparisons to genres like Krautrock are predictable, however we feel these four songs are so heavily narrative and wildly visceral that attempting to categorize the music would be a disservice to your imagination. We implore you to lay back in a nice stereo environment and absorb the purity of Thunder Tillman’s endeavor—appreciate their command of melody, composition, spectrum, magic… and try to recall the last time you chanced upon something truly different.

Mary Ocher - The Endlessness (Song for Young Xenophobes)

The Antinote guys have always been keen on introducing new names to you and this addition to the label’s catalogue makes no exception to the rule: they are pleased to present Sfarot, the debut EP from Alek Lee, a musician currently living in Tel-Aviv.

The geographic origin of the artists on the Parisian imprint has never been felt as much as on Alek Lee’s debut 12”. In a very “fourth world” manner, Alek Lee brings together middle-eastern influences in his music with ease and without ever having it sounding cliché: on Harabait and Sfarot (and its dub version), his friends and him play the violin, the bass clarinet and the accordion in a way which reminds of Klezmer music, putting the three songs on the EP in line with both his musical education and his cultural background. 

This seems strikingly true when taking into account the process Alek Lee went through to record the tittle-track: the original material used in Sfarot comes from a recording Lee did a few years, and on which were recorded traditional songs Israeli children used to learn at school, performed by a choir of very young kids. Both conceptually and musically hypnotizing, Sfarot and its dub version take the listener on a slightly psychedelic trip
as the haunted voices from the kids loose themselves in long reverbs and are backed by a wide range of instruments played by the Israeli musician including an electric organ, percussions, etc.

And if you are still in need of more dubby excursions, the closing track is the one for you !

The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child.

With such a choice name, it’s no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven’s calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o’-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions.

‘Traveler’ opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a “solitary man” lost to “green oblivion”. Similarly, ‘Her Majesty II’ glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst ‘Bertha’ slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.

The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like ‘Walking Distance’ (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and ‘New Years Eve’ are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band’s cover of ‘Marie Elene’ (by Keith Pearson) and closing track ‘Destroyer’ are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don’t want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

‘The Green Child’ is due for release on January 12th through Upset The Rhythm on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some spirited sleeve design by James Vinciguerra.
