CRUDE Premiere: Elise Massoni - Silk [XX LAB]

As a proud project of DGTL Records, the ‘Various Artists’ series originated with the idea of merging local talents with friends of the DGTL family. Continuing along these lines, the latest EP is a stellar extension of its 2020 predecessor. ‘Various Artists - Volume Two Remixes’ features 4 unique remixes by electronic music heavyweights. Expect a contemporary reimagining of familiar tracks by frontrunners Sandunes, Lauer, Fort Romeau and Tom Trago. Both Lauer and Fort Romeau have featured on previous releases, marking their return to the label.

Staying true to her skillful play on emotive soundscapes, Mumbai-based Sandunes (@sandunes) sets the tone. After making her DGTL debut at DGTL Bengaluru 2020, her spin on Lovshai’s (@lovshai) ‘Solo’ re-invents the cosmic-heavy house tune into one with progressive electronic elements and synth-heavy harmonies. Bringing us his remix of Vermelho Wonder's (@vermelhowonder) ‘Espetáculos Extraordinários’ is German DJ/Producer Lauer (@lauerofficial). Interweaving deep house grooves with an 80's-inspired disco sound, it’s an exciting play on the edgy counterpart.

Following suit, UK-based DJ/producer Fort Romeau (@fortromeau), takes his seat at the table. Recognised for his eclectic mix of house and techno, his remix of Pin Up Club’s (@pin-up-club) ‘Sanguine’ is an ambient re-telling of the original - with a touch of melodic influences. Widely recognised as one of the leading lights of the Dutch electronic music landscape, Tom Trago (@tomtrago) brings his frictionless sound and underground ear to FM Live’s ‘Tal Como Soy’. It’s a different spin to the dance heavy original, falling in line with the Dutchman’s groovy MPC- heavy sound.

Artwork is delivered by Tasso Okinawa, as part of the ongoing series he curates for DGTL Records.

DGTL Records proudly serves up Volume Two of its Various Artists compilation series this spring. 

The music is all coming from local artists of all the cities they have DGTL in, and they wanted to showcase this exciting talent and give them an extra podium with this VA. To that end, Perdu, Colyn, Magit Cacoon, FM Live, Yotam Avni and more all appear on this superb 12 track collection. 

Lovshai kicks off with the boogie bass and cosmic, future facing deep techno of Solo before FM serves up some smooth, seductive Detroit house that ripples with lush late-night energy. Dutchman Perdu offers The Light Within, which is an 80s tinged house track with old school chords and future-retro keys, Sanguine from Pin Up Club is a sleazier synth house affair with angular riffs, and Jenia Tarsol & Fortis's Baolam is a sweet cosmic prog adventure.

Brazil's Vermelho Wonder then offers the edgy astral techno journey that is Espetáculos Extraordinários and Colyn gets masterfully melodic on a series of skyward arps that lift you to the heavens. Elsewhere there is edgy grooves from Magic Cacoon, deep disco house from Sjamsoedin and floating techno from Yotam Avni that gets you in a trance. Davis's slick sci-fi electro track Vestido De Espaço and the tunnelling and hypotonic techno of PØLI & Lorenzo Raganzini's Velo closes things down in real style. 

Once again this is a fine window into the unique musical world of this essential Dutch crew.

Hailing from Amsterdam, Melawati, also known as Melawati Modular, is a composer, sound designer, avid lover of modular synths, and an experimental live electronic music artist making his debut on Ellum Audio. His beautiful single also features two astounding remixes by the maestro and label head Maceo Plex and melancholic masters Tale of Us.

The excellent 'Daliah' is a smooth and seductive journey through lush melody and productive synth work. Those synths come in various forms, from fluid smears to more pixelated stabs. The restless breakbeats below his humming tunes add to the sense of adventure as you race through the cosmos on the galactic journey Melawati has created.

Maceo Plex steps up to remix, with a version that has tense, textured chord vamps, punchy kicks, and enigmatic twinkling keys raining down from above. It is epic and cinematic and a perfect fit for his always far-gazing label.

Finally, the acclaimed Italian duo treats us with their excellent remix. Tale of US flip the cut into a spacious melodic techno track with dramatic breakdowns, big chord builds, and a cruising groove that will carry the auditor into the next dimension.

This is an innovative, classy melodic techno track of the highest order.

Melawati - Daliah

Tim Reaper makes his Lobster Theremin main label debut with a killer EP of jungle, DNB, and fast-paced soulful 4/4 techno.

London-based DJ/producer Tim Reaper is an artist whose output over the last few years has been nothing but spectacular, releasing record after record of huge jungle and breakbeat for labels such as 7th Storey Projects, Repertoire, Meditator Music and Parallax Recordings, as well as his own standout Globex Corp and Future Retro imprints. His latest outing ‘Cityscapes’ on Lobster Theremin delves deep into his core sound and influences, with head high jungle breaks alongside chest rattling bass and 2-step laden grooves. 

The A-side glides from the classic glacial synths and breaks on title track ‘Cityscapes’ to the euphoric pitched up techno-hardcore of ‘Sequence 2’. Flipping over and straight into the minor scale 80’s soundtrack arpeggiations of ‘Make It Real’, loaded up with a whole ton of rave tropes, fills and melodic flourishes. Rounding out the EP is the 4/4 jungle of ‘(I Can) Feel It’, a light drifting groove layered over with undulating kicks and ethereal 90’s synth. A low-key liquid ending to this tour de force four-tracker of UK jungle.

We often find there are two types of artists. One internalises their process, endlessly perfecting their work while finding the endpoint a massive hurdle, and in turn producing immaculate yet very little art. The other is continuously inspired, so full of ideas they can barely work fast enough to articulate them all. The art becomes by-product of their larger trajectory and not just a collection of endpoints. Lord Of The Isles a.k.a. Neil McDonald seems to be both. He’s always in an evolving state of process where work is constantly shed to make way for a new layer growing beneath, yet he holds his cards closely, cherry-picking when and with whom he releases that work into the world.
Neil is simply prolific. In 2016 he shared with us a vast catalog of unheard beauty, which over a long span of time was collaboratively shaped into his debut album 'In Waves'. In the span between the album release and now, Neil has performed on a number of ESP Institute label showcases from Los Angeles to Amsterdam to Berlin, and released a few efforts with our peers, but all throughout he’s been holed up working on his sophomore album [sigh]. Though patience has become a sort of meditation during this global upside-down, we couldn’t help but squeeze out an interim release to uphold the fantasy. So, four years after the release of 'In Waves', we’re proud to present a very long-winded follow-up single for the album’s monster track 'Skylark'. Accompanied by a previously unreleased album cut entitled 'OmniMulti', the single also touts two glorious remixes; a sunkissed version by fellow esteemed Scotsman Linkwood and an atmospheric dismantling by the Melbourne hopeful Tourist Kid. You see, good things come to those who wait.
