Sometimes we are inclined to take all the things that make up our culture a bit too serious, including ourselves. It seems that, as soon as we cross over to the other side of the PA and stand before the monitors, that seminal hedonistic drive that brought us there is consumed by the unrealistic needs of our high-demanding selves, so we end up stuck on details instead of having some good fun with it all. A bit of a contradictory dynamic, since what lies at the core of any decent experience of musical enjoyment is not careful oversight but cheerful delight, and the best among us, those who excel at making others revel, know quite well when to let these details unravel. Any artist that has achieved it will tell you that, when it comes to conducting a dancefloor, greatness is a byproduct of happiness more than a matter of fitness, which is exactly what we see, hear and feel whenever we experience the enrapturing sets a DJ with CC:Disco’s talents and sensibilities has to offer. Every mix of hers is a joyful journey where she guides us through varied soundscapes made of sonic material from all around the globe and woven with technical prowess. All indispensable qualities of everything we esteem and anything she sets herself to do, and her contribution to this series is no exception.

For edition 69 of our guest mix series, we welcome once again London-based record collector Ilan (Night City Life). A true Italo enthusiast, Ilan curated Night City Life (@spacetalkmusic), one of our favourite compilations of 2019. Night City Life II will be dropping this summer (and we can’t wait 🎷)

As a DJ his selections are always rich with nostalgia and emotion, taking us on a journey through time and sound. Here is a recording of his vinyl-only set from Flow Festival last year; an Italo-tinged expedition in the Helsinki sunshine.

H.A.N.D. MIX 069 - Ilan (Night City Life)

London based producers, visual artists and DJ duo, Good Block have been throwing parties in the capital for nearly 15 years. Hosting the likes of Ramzi, Mogwaa, Jex Opolis, Gabrielle Kwarteng, Jamie Tiller, Zaltan, Bufiman, Jon K, Cosmic Slop, Bradley Zero, Apiento, Bahamian Moor, Trujillo, Jonny Rock and many more. 

In 2018 the duo started a very popular dropbox folder of free edits which slowly continues to expand. With a string of productions and remixes on the likes of Isle Of Jura, Emotional Response, Planet Trip, Heels & Souls and Duca Bianco they also released three EPs - 4 Corners, Aquaculture and Naiad / Dryad on their own imprint.

On 20th March 2025 the duo will debut their full length album ‘Window’ a collection of works recorded between 2017 - 2024 representing hours of musical experimentation and emerging from the many influences that have shaped their sound. The album will be available on limited edition double gatefold vinyl and full digital release, with artwork by the duo.

As part of our countdown to RA.1000, a milestone in the 24-year history of RA's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format. The next few editions will pair two acts who complement each other's strengths, offering a fresh take on a particular community, scene or style. 

This week, we're zeroing in on Ron Trent and Ash Lauryn, two names who fly the flag high for old-school US house—a foundational pillar of the electronic underground. 

Trent takes the A-side. Hailing from Chicago, the birthplace of house, the pioneer is a master of finding the sweet spot where machine music meets organic instrumentation.  Listen to any DJ set or record in his extensive back catalogue and you'll find a wealth of exquisitely expressive melodies and deep, spiritual frequencies, making him the ideal narrator for any survey on house. (If you've only got a moment, sink into "Morning Factory," nine minutes of perfection.) 

Trent's return to the RA Podcast, 19 years after his debut in 2006, represents his many decades of expertise in fusing funk with gorgeous musicianship under the umbrella of heart-stirring house. Some may call it a masterclass but to us, it's just Trent doing what he does best.

Listened to as a whole, RA.996 is a powerful snapshot of house's elegance, class and most importantly, understated yet innately euphoric joy.

In the late 90’s, east-side LA was in the throws of a post-indie explosion; a network of stoned bands ranging from neo-psychedelia to pseudo-country overran Spaceland (our generation’s Troubadour) and the local Silverlake Lounge. I was playing freakbeat records twice a week in dive bars, half of Spacemen 3 was crashing at my house (my drop-out roommate was Sonic Boom’s tour drummer) and it was during this blur that I met Raymond Richards, a clean-cut all-American pedal steel guitarist playing in Mojave 3 (the country-tinged 4AD side project of shoegaze royalty, Slowdive). I was instantly swept off my feet, head over heels in love with Raymond's weeping tone — the most chill-inducing, emotionally responsive dialog I’d had with music since discovering Satie as a child — it was then and it is now, truly haunting. After a year of personnel trials, my roommate and I stole Raymond for our own band, and not only did he smother our songs with his enchanting steel, he was virtuosic with a variety of atypical instruments such as baritone guitar and theremin, he utilized them all. The band was short-lived — I split to jam with Ariel Pink, Raymond fled to Portland, then me subsequently to New York City — but in founding the ESP Institute years later, there was always a recurring mental note; "we must make Raymond’s pedal steel album." I had managed to wrangle his blessed performance on a remix for Project Club’s 'El Mar Y La Luna', but it took almost a decade until I once again wore the producer hat and we began working on 'The Lost Art Of Wandering', a title borrowed from Sam Shepard’s 'Stories'. Spiritually candid, expansive yet enveloping, this is the strung-out, visceral country music that simply radiates from Raymond. Each song is his set of coordinates in a vast open terrain, holding a sentimental familiarity, a truthful longing for the simple comforts that diffuse life’s complications, a place to get lost. —Lovefingers
