Thirteen years ago the Nurture label released upekah, the one and only single to come under the son.sine alias. It’s an alias of a New Zealander who released only a select few EPs under different monikers, and one that sounds as good today as it did back then given all its dub infused techno glory. It’s always been hard to come buy but now Delsin are remastering and rereleasing it into the world once more.

First up is the title track, a double deep track of spacious, gently pulsing dub that initially revels in blissfully ambient swirls before growing a touch more edgy and metallic in the latter half thanks to some panning steel stabs.

On the flip, 'karuna' is just as deep and cavernous. Filling the huge chambers of echo and reverb are more ambient patterns, subtle beams of light and an ever churning, grainy dub undercurrent. Lastly, 'Mudita' is more propulsive and up right, with hunched drums rotating below and rueful ambient drones up top. Classy business indeed from the New Zealander.

Bonobo ft. Szjerdene - Get Thy Bearings [Exclusive Cover] (Late Night Tales: Bonobo)

Late Night Tales and Bonobo were pretty much made for each other, it just took them a while to both realise it. Stepping forward into the compiler’s spotlight for the 33rd edition is Simon Green – aka Bonobo – a musician, producer and DJ perfectly suited to soundtrack an evening spent reclining to some parallel beats. Six albums to the good (‘The North Borders’ released earlier in 2013), Green has been on a winning streak since 2010’s breakthrough ‘Black Sands’, which has now sold in excess of 160,000 copies. His music has aided the sales of Citroen cars and Olay creams, as well as soothing the puzzlement of Lost. Wrapped in delicately programmed drums, Green’s music is at once both sombre and reassuring. If what comes out the other end is the music of Bonobo, then this is the fuel that keeps the engine running: soul, jazz, classical, pop, funk, leftfield, rock. Pianos and brass are abundantly present. Our ivories are warmed and tickled by the classic, Bill Evans, and new school, with Matthew Bourne’s mournfully beautiful ‘Juliet’ and Dustin O’Halloran’s ‘An Ending A Beginning’. The brass section comes courtesy of Menehan Street Band’s jazzy ‘The Traitor’, ‘Flipside’ by the Hypnotic Brass Band. Also included is YouTube sensation ‘One Thing’ by Peter & Kerry, R&S signing Airhead, jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby and the timeless soul of Dorando’s ‘Didn’t I’. Not only that, but there’s Bonobo’s special LNT cover version, a brilliant reading of Donovan’s ‘Get Thy Bearings’. As the light dims, the unsettling sounds of Lapalux or maybe even Shlomo pierce the misty evening air, before giving way to the ethereal splendour of Eddi Front’s ‘Gigantic’ or even Nina Simone’s paean to an imagined rural idyll ‘Baltimore’. Amble down to the riverside. It could be the Great Ouse, as willows weep into the water; it could even be in Brooklyn overlooking the Lower East Side, as the sun slides down the sides of the skyscrapers. Take a notepad for inspiration. Maybe even a hipflask for a slug of something warm. Sit down and reflect and let those beautiful pianos skim the water’s surface. Sometimes, you think, life is good. You can’t play a symphony alone, it takes an orchestra to play it: Simon Green is your conductor.

"The way I approached this mix was very different to how I would normally. I wasn’t thinking of it as a DJ mix so much as a selection. I’ve been familiar with the series for a long time, and I was conscious of that, but I really wanted to put together a curated selection. DEATH COMET CREW — GHOST AMONG THE CREW — 2LP + DIGITAL

Following acclaimed singles from Powell, Blood Music, Shit & Shine and Prostitutes, the next release from Diagonal is a landmark. It marks both the London label's first full-length album release, and the return of abrasive and furiously funky hip-hop deconstructionists Death Comet Crew, one of the most quietly influential underground acts to emerge from the creative melting pot of 1980s New York. Released mid-December, Ghost Among The Crew documents the group's return to studio operations for the first time since the 80s, as well as their first ever full-length studio album. It's a remarkable trip: a consolidation of their early feral disassemblies of hip-hop and electro, but also broader in scope, chewing up and spitting out fragments of soul, jazz fusion, punk and industrial music.

Death Comet Crew were founded in New York City in 1983 by Stuart Argabright, a founder member of post-punk/industrial mavericks Ike Yard and the mind behind Dominatrix and later Black Rain. Their sound, then as now, was a singular proposition: urban in mood, exploratory, often compellingly danceable, yet confrontational. It emerged from the interweaving talents of the group's varied members: guitarist Michael Diekmann (of Ike Yard), bassist Shinichi Shimokawa (later of Black Rain) and Nick Taylor aka DJ High Priest, frequently joined by the late, great hip hop artist and graffiti writer Rammellzee. Having recorded two studio EPs — 1985's At The Marble Bar (featuring Rammellzee) and its follow-up Mystic Eyes — the group disbanded barely a year after forming. They left behind a reputation for their incendiary live performances, several recordings from which were gathered on crucial 2004 compilation This Is Riphop.

The musical climate that first birthed Death Comet Crew was one of fertile cross-pollination of styles. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the seeds of modern day urban musics — hip hop, punk and post-punk, no wave — were taking root in the streets of recession-struck New York City. Argabright recalls dancing at the downtown Mudd Club around 1980 to a bold mixture of styles, with DJs cutting from synth-pop and post-punk to funk, soul and early hip-hop: Bowie and James Brown next to Run DMC, Ultravox and Gary Numan. Indeed, the names of his New York contemporaries operating around the same time — the likes of Liquid Liquid, Run DMC, Afrika Bambaataa, Arthur Russell, ESG, Swans, Sonic Youth, Bill Laswell and more — have since been inscribed in modern music history.

With previous projects Dominatrix and Ike Yard having recently become inactive, in 1984 Argabright formed Death Comet Crew as a means of exploring new sonic avenues. He'd been experimenting with tape, recording and procesing the sounds of his surrounding environment and dialogue from films and TV. Joined by Shimokawa, Diekmann and Taylor, and using drum machines, turntables, spidery guitar and bass, the group assembled a scrambled collage of rhythms and sampled voices. Their live performances were, in Argabright's words, "aurally violent, sharp-edged, downright lacerating", hacking gleefully away at hip hop and electro's rhythmic frameworks. Rammellzee joined the group to vocal 1985 debut EP At The Marble Bar; his MC turn on highlight 'Exterior Street' is all the more remarkable for having been entirely freestyled in the studio. When Death Comet Crew reformed in 2003 for a string of live shows, he continued as an active member of the group, touring and working with them during the recording of Ghost Among The Crew, until he sadly passed away in 2010.

After reforming, Death Comet Crew began writing and recording new material. Now, following on from their just-released Galacticoast 12" through Citinite, Ghost Among The Crew — its title a homage to Rammellzee — hones the group's abrasive early experimentations while tripping into bold and astrally minded new territory. Alongside the core quartet of Argabright, Diekmann, Shimokawa and Taylor are new voices, including Rapscallion (a friend of Rammellzee's), Jessica 6/Hercules & Love Affair singer Nomi Ruiz, and Carolyn 'Honeychild' Coleman. Its eight tracks are steeped in the impulsive spirit of electric Miles and the deep space romances of Sun Ra, and possessed of an enigmatic yet undeniable pop edge. But equally they're pricked with urban paranoia and dread, traits that have long been hallmarks of Argabright's musical projects.

'Me Czar Of The Magyars' opens the album in a twist of tension like the turning of a ratchet. Its taut electroid shudder is paired with machine gunned cymbal hits and a voice telling of "wormwood and opium dens" — the sound of being teleported from everyday city streets into the astral plane, where every sensory input is heightened and the promise of danger or pleasure lurks unseen around every corner. Later, Coleman's lyrics pay tribute to Rammellzee on the sci-fi funk of 'Deep Space Woman'. 'Let The Clubs Ring' melts lounge bar organs and frazzled guitar into freakishly unstable shapes, while 'Drag Racing' matches its title, rocketing along frantically atop clattering drums. 'Moons On Titan's Seas' is halfway interlude pause for rest, like an exotic cocktail in a bar orbiting some as-yet-undiscovered new world. These varied strands are somehow all summarised in album closer 'Ignition Spark', which sets Ruiz's vocals alongside Taylor's and Argabright's. The zone the trio inhabit in this final track exists in perpetual push-pull between contemplation, memory, intrigue and violence, a decisive opening of a new chapter in Death Comet Crew's history.

Ghost Among The Crew will be released through Diagonal this December in double LP and download formats. Art comes, once again, from Guy Featherstone, who has also created a limited run of silk-screen prints that will be available for purchase once the record comes out.

We first got switched onto Telfort's productions when he dropped his debut release last April to inagurate his self titled imprint, TLFT. The 12" became a firm favourite of the Phonica crew and flew off the shelves just as quickly as it arrived. He's slowly but surely carving out his own sound and now we're extremely pleased to be debuting the title track off TLFT002 here on Phonica Premieres!

The second we heard "Lickety Split" we were nodding along and tapping our feet in approval. The track opens up with joyful and optimistic pads paired with crisp percussion and once the sub-heavy kicks and squelchy bassline kick-in you get that life-afirming feeling we've all felt at sunrise after one of those classic care-free summer nights. Inside Out is a brand new series that invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. The mix will be release digitally and on CD, while a selection of the tracks will also be available on double gatefold vinyl. Each instalment will feature 100% new and unreleased music. It is a chance for artists to take sole creative charge, A&R as they see fit and then commission brand new music specifically for the cause. Depending on who is at the helm, Inside Out will take different forms: producers may wish to represent their own sound with only music they have made themselves or with close collaborators, while DJs and label heads may wish to reflect the sounds and scenes that surround them. The results will be a window into an artist’s world that works as a coherent mix, but also as a treasure trove of fresh new music that steps outside the usual lines of a dance album. The idea stems from Will Saul’s own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. That feeling of taking people into the unknown is one that reminds him of the energy and excitement of his early days as a dancer.
"I wanted to try and recreate the feeling I used to get in the 90's when you went clubbing and heard your favourite DJ play but had never heard the vast majority of the tracks he/she was playing,” explains Will. “Your mind would be constantly blown by hearing totally new music for the first time. We've pretty much lost this with the proliferation of online mixes, Shazam, early EP premieres and free streams.”
For Will’s mix he enlists an array of artists who he’s worked with over the years, many of whom have released on one of his labels in that time. These include the likes of Lone, Pearson Sound, https://soundcloud.com/move-d , Gerd, Youandewan, Martyn, Falty DL, Dauwd, Appleblim and Marquis Hawkes.
Will’s mix shows off the many facets of his own DJ sets, productions and labels over the last 15 years. It includes a Floorplan remix of tracks he’s made as Primitive Trust, and a collaboration with Komon on ‘Positive’, a perfect sci-fi house track that surges through the night on a wave of serene synth smears and cosmic melodies. The mix overall exudes a woozy warmth, and ranges from hazy late night house to absorbing passages of sparse dub via rubbery techno rollers and slippery electro. A lot is packed into the trip, making it perfectly fluid and forever on the move. At a time when music is more accessible and available than ever, a strong curatorial ear and expert insight into specific sound worlds has never been more valuable to guide us through the noise. This place was like a dream, a paradise beneath the clouds. Travelling downstream, rowing in Eden they watched as the tall reeds and the exotic birds passed by on the riverbank. Sat upon their little wooden boat they were at peace with the world as the rain began to fall softly all around them, it was not cold but warm and they smiled as they looked up at the heavens above. The clouds did not bother them any more for they had learnt to exist beneath the haze. 

Optimo Music are back with another release in their digital danceforce series. The series of releases is becoming quite the force having acted as an outlet for the likes of Tornado Wallace, Marcus Worgull, Vanessa Worm, Feon, Theus Mago and more. 

Now it's Bleaching Agent's turn to release a two track stormer of an EP described by himself below:

Whilst each track has it's differences, the EP predominantly revolves itself around the outlandish and abstract tones that are introduced by the Original Mix.
"06:19 (Massimiliano Pagliara Remix)" reinvents the bassline of the original with a 303 disco/acid overhaul setting the tone and style of the track, Massi's reinvention of the original brings energy to the dancefloor through the use of the lyrics and a suspenseful build-up making it a club anthem.

Tune in to Far Out Radio Systems, whose antennas may rest on Belgian soil but whose strong signals head in all directions. Station master of Far Out Radio Systems is the Genk-based producer Thomas Neyens, who keeps a cinemascope view on electronic music and has previously released on the SoHaSo label as Kiani & His Legion.

This EP shows some of his many strengths. You’ll find Holden-like modular waves on Theme For The Lockdown, beautiful intricate Isan-esque melodies on Imagine The Sun and Cykotine Storm, and a straight four-four kick on the disco-driven Skies.

Opening track On Boolean Plans is something else entirely. It relives the time when amen breaks were flooding the streets of London. But Neyens brings things up to par with current pandemic times by including beautiful melancholic strings.

Far Out Radio Systems truly lives up to its name. Strong vibes in every direction.

Here comes Reznik's and his studio-buddy and friend Good Guy Mikesh's first full-fledged EP for the Keinemusik label. Them getting together can result in somewhat variable stylistic outcomes and so this batch of tunes certainly adds some exquisite nuances to the label's sound- portfolio.
"Human Factor" on A distinctively affirms that Reznik and Mikesh are kids of the 80ies. Effectively it is synth-heaven, layering riffs, melodies and chilly beat patterns on top of each other, building a foundation to be pinnacled by that hook you might not be able to get out of your head for quite a while. So, little trigger warning right there. A strongly crafted tune that balances Pop-sensibilities, educated references, club qualities and that name giving, at all hands needed human factor into a soon-to-be classic.
"It's Not You It's Me" on the flipside insinuates itself in a rather emotive manner, introducing a mantra-like organ motive, switches between stoic and dynamic drum patterns and an all-over organic feel, altogether adding up to what would be one of this season's most sensitive ways to get a floor going (if there was a season after all).
Closing things off is Adam Port's take on "It's Not You It's Me", a remix that breaks the original's dynamic down to a more loop-based club-approved modus operandi, re-shaping the beat with toms and shakers, implementing drones and variations of the organ-hook, upping the ante to meet the requirements of a rather post-peak application.

LAGASTA Premiere: Reznik & Mikesh - Human Factor

Metal is a collaborative endeavor between Bristol and London artists Jamie Paton and Mike Bourne of Cage & Aviary and Teeth Of The Sea, respectively. A shared love for modular synthesis brought the two together in 2018 for a series of improvised live performances and the tracks featured on this EP were born from rehearsals for those sessions. What draws ESP to this music is its paradigmatic nature. The tracks are exercises in improvisation yet there is a level of control in which the performance slowly comes alive. Jam sessions allow for artistic gratification, a freedom of form often at the expense of the listener, but when artists set forth exacting parameters, there grows an opportunity for alternate forms of fulfillment on both sides of the experience. As is typical among stylistic prototypes, a reduction of tools frees the artist to narrow their focus and explore more singular modes of performance. Jamie and Mike chose texture as a concept, namely Metal, and following the aforementioned methods, minimized their instrumentation toward the aesthetic representation of that element. Operating in a void without the convenience and advantages of the infinite tools we’re now accustomed to, they exhausted a short list of granular details, honing their concept to a fine point. Throughout these three iterations on the theme, we hear timbres that depict metal literally, but moreover we gain a view into the duo’s visceral attachment to its materiality, abstractions of its surfaces, and an overall transgression from conventional constructs of beauty. The idea is simple, designed with discipline to romanticize both the crudeness and elegance in one of Earth’s most industrious and enigmatic elements. Metal.
