Alexis Le-Tan is a dear friend of ours, and has shared a musical sympatico with our family for over a decade, regularly collaborating with the ESP Institute and Blackdisco. So it is with great pleasure that we christen the Listening Sessions series with this beautifully melancholic mix from Monsieur L'Agent himself.

[MIX] ESP Institute - Listening Sessions I — Alexis Le-Tan

I am informed by and fascinated with reconciling dueling interests with electronic music and the importance of cheap art. The conflict, for me, goes like this: I love mixing; there is no greater rush for me than weaving the peaks of two songs together into one euphoric wave that myself and the audience can ride out together. That is, and should be, the allure of being a DJ. But, there are incredible economic barriers to accessing this form; software, decks, sound systems, costs that must be made back, and so, pure art becomes commodified, the tools to make the art possible an investment, promotional deals an economic alleviation.
Is this simply the new patronage system that we must deal with, or is there a better path we can forge? How free can this medium be?
