As a prelude to the upcoming Soul:ution Room Two takeover on Friday 16th May, label boss Marcus Intalex and one of Manchester’s most reliable renegade emcees, DRS, have bumped consciousness and put together this, their ‘Mid Mic Crisis’ mix. Regular sparring partners in clubs the world over, DRS’ trademark measured Mancuian flow rides perfectly atop on Intalex’s soulful selection with his baritone delivery sitting sweetly and filling out the dynamic range of the rolling selections which reportedly feature, in some form, material from DRS’ forthcoming second album, Mid Mic Crisis.

Basically it’s a glorious and specifically tailored 62 minute mixtape showcase of DRS’ potency as a host, an emcee and a vocalist. But it comes mixed by Intalex which more than hints at the level of quality it contains... two of Manchester's finest in sterling form.

S.P.Y - Essential Mix @ BBC Radio1 - January 2015

Representing the more measured, musical strain of drum & bass, Furney is a name you'll regularly find alongside LTJ Bukem in Room Two. He's released on a fleet of major labels including Soul Deep Recordings, CIA and Liquid V but it's his flourishing relationship with Bukem and the material he's dropped via the seminal Goodlooking Records imprint that's helped give him his sterling reputation for fuelling that specialist sound, something he plans to fully demonstrate when he drops his long awaited debut album via LD Music later this year. In fact,  he'll even be giving us a glimpse of his audio wizardry this weekend when he once again ventures to Farringdon to join Bukem and the legend that is Fabio inside the booth. Lucky for us, we're able to jump the gun and get a little taster of what's in store with this new mix that the Bradford-born producer's just delivered to our doors...

Back in 2010, Gilles Peterson recorded a special Brownswood Basement show focusing on the evolution of drum & bass through the 90s and into the 00s. It was by no means a comprehensive history of the genre, but it did represent an excellent snapshot of the tunes that struck a chord with Gilles back then. 100% vinyl (and acetates), Gilles spent the best part of a day rummaging through hundreds of records and picked out around 40 of his favourite tracks from the likes of Alex Reece, Peshay, Goldie, Drumagick, Roni Size and Photek… then @alex-patchwork got deep in the mix. Here then, is the first hour-long mix that made up that show - no links, jingles or drops - just the music. We hope you enjoy it.
