There hasn't been a rise to notoriety quite like that of Hospital Records' seminal signee, S.P.Y. After making a huge impact on the drum & bass circuit with his debut album, What The Future Holds, back in 2011, the studio dynamo is once again showcasing his unparalleled production skills with his two part follow up LP, Back To Basics (Part One of which was released earlier this year). Taking a slightly darker direction this time around, the records been split into two parts, a process which according to S.P.Y was the only way to trim back a 70 track strong catalogue of music he had earmarked for it. . 

So, with a only a couple months before he releases the second chapter, we grabbed an exclusive new mix and caught up with the Brazilian producer to chat about the project as a whole and the forthcoming record and what to expect come August 1st when he’ll touch down in Room One alongside London Elektricity, Source Direct and Lenzman for the album launch...

High Contrast's 2004 album 'High Society' is a breathtaking drum 'n' bass album full of soulful and melodic goodies. 

Tracks like 'Tutti Frutti' and 'Racing Green' zip along as though they've been spiked with E numbers and his 2008 remix of Adele's 'Hometown Glory' was rinsed by just about every DJ on Hospital Records.

After a lot of demand from his fans, JOOP finally decided to do a remake of his classic anthem The Future. The Future, as we all know, was a career defining release for JOOP. The Anthem for one of Holland's largest dance festivals ID&T's Trance Energy 2007 and a record that continues to be a favourite among festival attendees to this day.

Of course, it is not an easy task to touch a classic. Whereas the original production was a true trance banger, the new remake sports an undeniable 2013 sound. Get ready for Earth-shaking beats, kick drums that are larger than life, a stadium rocking riff, and of course that haunting vocal snippet we all know from the original. 

Last year's Just One Night already showed some of JOOP's all-round production skills in which we hear a combination of Big Room, dubstep-esque electro beats and trance. Armin Van Buuren was one of the first Djs to support this gem in his radio show A State Of Trance which is listened to by millions of fans around the world every week! The new remake of The Future takes it all to the next level. 

Before its official release, Leon Bolier gave it a test run at ASOT 600 and the initial reactions were lauding. JOOP has been rocking the international festival circuit for over a decade now, with recent gigs in Kuala Lumpur, Cyprus, Turkey, Algeria and many more to be announced soon. JOOP also recently has teamed up with the new 657 DJ Agency from Seattle. 

JOOP recently finished building his new studio and a new production is coming up with Leon Bolier. Also expect a stunning collaboration between JOOP & Daniel Wanrooy, and soon to be released another collab with Raneem called ZigZag. With support from the world's leading Djs,

JOOP - THE FUTURE 2013 [High Contrast Recordings]

Essence of Chi was birthed in South London in February 2004 and swiftly emerged as one of the most rapidly expanding Drum & Bass promotions of the early 2000s. Renowned for throwing unforgettable parties that ensnared all facets of drum and bass, from the depths of deep grooves to the explosive energy of the dance floor, EOC events are famed for their electric atmosphere, meticulous attention to detail in sound, lighting and space, and of course a roster of exceptional artists, harmoniously blended together to achieve the perfect equilibrium.

From humble origins at Brixton's Plan B, EOC gradually evolved into roadblocked birthday soirées at Scala and Hidden, whilst regular events at the then-infamous Herbal in Shoreditch witnessed around-the-block queues. Gramaphone became the next stomping ground from 2010 until its eventual closure in 2011.

EOC’s sonic wings continued to spread: hosting tour parties in locations across the UK, such as Leeds, Oxford, Brighton, Guildford, and Portsmouth & arenas at some of London's most prestigious drum and bass events, including Renegade Hardware v Valve during Carnival 2006, The Baby Box and Bar at the iconic Ministry of Sound for their in-house d&b nights, Fuse and Switch. EOC even had the privilege of commanding an entire weekend at Innovation in the Sun two years on the trot, alongside Rotation. Not forgetting their legendary legacy at Moondance, the EOC area held a regular residency for an unparalleled ten years running. This lead to being twice nominated twice for the coveted title of Best Small Club Night at the Drum n Bass Awards, in both 2008 and 2009.

Fast forward to 2017, when Essence of Chi made an explosive comeback, taking on the mighty task of leading the electrifying Drum n Bass stage at Moondance Festival, while also returning triumphantly to Scala for a curated extravaganza on the hallowed ground of New Year’s Eve. And thus began a wave of "Middle Skool" events, paying homage to the Golden Era of 1999-2009 in conjunction with scene stalwart, DJ Ascension, captivating the hearts and souls of ravers at North London's Work Bar & Club 512.

With the dawn of 2024 on the horizon, EOC sets its sights on a momentous 20th Anniversary celebration. Plans are underway for a multi-venue jubilee, crafted in collaboration with their longtime allies and ethical clothing sponsors, THTC. Coincidentally, THTC themselves are celebrating an impressive 25 years in the industry, making this a harmonious convergence of musical milestones.
