Celebrating my first International Dawn Chorus Day in Nairobi, where I'm usually woken up by Pied Crows, House Sparrows and Hadadas...and very audible traffic noise in the distance. So, I'm sharing a mixed chorus from one of my most memorable camping expeditions in Kitobo Forest, away from city noise pollution. Ideally dawn chorus is majorly orchestrated by birds but this is not always guaranteed. This day we were woken up by a mix of Black and white Colobus Monkeys and Red-capped Robin-chats, which made a beautiful dawn chorus. Enjoy every little bit of nature's music wherever you are.

For a long while now I have been trying to record the complex and very quiet song of the bullfinch and this morning I succeeded! No wind and about ten bullfinches were quite close to me. Nåsten, Uppsala, February 25, 2023.

Early morning. I went to see if it would be possible to record moor frogs in a place where I know they are. I didn't see any frogs, but I did meet a capercaillie. I tied the microphones to a tree and left to record. The picture shows the same bird that appears in the recording.

Western capercaillie makes vocalizations in early spring forest

A herd of red cows approaching us from front and passing by on a warm September noon of 2019 at the hills of Southern Urals. Lots of energetic mooing, shepherd shouts and whistles, some birds chirping and moderate wind. I love this recording for its brutal and raw energy.
Recorded with Nevaton VR FOA mic into Zaxcom Fusion 12, decoded to binaural with Harpex-X plugin. Please listen on headphones for correct spatial reproduction.

Red Cows at Southern Urals_BINAURAL

Always difficult recording nocturnal subjects when you can't see them, especially with a parabolic dish that's super directional. I don't think I got it 'smack' on with this recording but I'm more gutted that the female wasn't present as prior to me getting the recording gear out, she was doing an epic bubbling call back to the male and it would have made such a nice recording but a car pulled up and she flew off...Till next time owls!

I was in Soomaa National Park recently.  I was there in 2012 and 2013, back then I had to stay outside the park and cycle in each day to record.  This time I was able to stay right in the park in an area that turned out to be the best area for recording.  Opposite to where I was staying was a fairly big area of short grass, I soon found that this is where Skylarks sang, three or even four birds as well as Lapwings.  This is also where I heard Jack Snipe for the first time, they sound very much like a galloping horse.  The weather was cold and a little breezy for the first few days, thankfully it settled down and became calm in the mornings so I could record.  I don't know why but even though the open area was big, maybe 20 acres, the birds kept to a small part of that, maybe one acre, this was really good as I believe it made them perform all the better.  I have hardly ever recorded Skylark much over my 42 years recording, so I decided to devote the rest of my stay to capturing the concert of Skylarks.  On my last day I noticed the birds were not singing as much and had moved away to an area nearby.  Looks like I had been in the right place at the right time.  I noticed that the best performances were in the really early mornings when it was still nearly dark.  I am delighted with the recordings.  Most mornings I set out three recording rigs, A Tascam DR100-Mk3 with the Rode NT4 with the Omni capsules, a Tascam X8 recorder with a pair of Lewitt 440's cardioid and finally a Sound devices MixPre3 recorder and a pair of Omni directional MKH8020's.  The field was saturated wet but gradually dried up somewhat.  If you hear a little crackle now and then, sounding like a vinyl record, it was probably made by air bubbles coming to the surface.  Some mornings could be really cold, 0C to 2C.  Recording 4430.
