A day in the life
Of a cynical old man
He’s not quite willing to
Fight those words
And he’s not sure he still can

He loves his wife
But he hardly holds her hand
You’d have to go back far in time
To see that love again

And it’s not that he’s uncertain
It’s not that he don’t care
But he goes about his morning
With a blank and empty stare

Of a guy we know as Paul
But after all these years he hardly
knows himself at all

It doesn’t seem right
To feel shame for what he’s done
Actions spoke as loud as words
Can’t take back either one

And he eats his lunch in silence
He often does so now
He knows when this all started
But he’s doesn’t quite know how
And it’s not that they don’t like him
He can make them crack a smile
But the times between the good ones
May extend for quite a while

But after all is said and done
He’ll only live so long

He sits down after dinner
To look at photographs
His kids have been gone so long
They feel like kids he never had
But he tries hard to remember
That despite the good and bad
His kids are always grateful
That they get to call him Dad
