A QUARTET FOR FRANÇOIS MORELLET (2012), for string quartet

François Morellet (1926-) is a contemporary French painter, 
engraver, sculptor and light artist. 
This short piece is based on his painting “Violet, bleu, vert, 
jaune, orange, rouge”, 1953, Centre Pompidou. 
The six colours are the ingredients of the piece. The musicians 
choose their six sounds freely. 
The music comes directly from the structure of the actual 
painting.

When I write, I like to think about pluralism, class, and identity as it exists in all the unspoken ways it does among creative peoples. I also reflect often on how to live a meaningful life and how to love.

My works have been realized primarily across Europe and the United States. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance and composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and a Master’s degree in composition from the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague. I am currently residing in Los Angeles, California.
