Shake the syntax! A tale of borrowed voices

Beginning with her own teenage years in East Berlin, which was conforming to a so-called West, the artist interweaves micro-stories from Kosovo that reveal the effects of identity politics on lived lives. For her essay-like storytelling, she distorts original sounds from archival recordings and fuses them into electroacoustic compositions. In words and sound, she imagines a hypothetical future that could be fed by the dreamed lives of the voices she has recalled. The radio drama serves as the prelude to nine sonic portraits: seven of human beings, and two of spaces. It includes research recordings with Kaltrina Krasniqi, Genc Salihu, Alisa Maliqi and Shkëlzen Maliqi.

'No Border' is the song written and performed by the students of Politema school in Palermo. The project was developed and led by Christian Picciotto, Palermo-based rapper and educator, in the framework of "Schools in Tandem", a programme devised by Manifesta 12 Education Department that involved eight local schools in four thematic tandems.  

Several years ago, as a result of the National education reform, two schools of Palermo - Federico II school in Borgo Vecchio and Archimede school in Politeama - have been united under ICS Politeama. While being close to each other geographically these two schools find themselves in two very different social realities. This project uses creative writing, storytelling and rap language to inspire narration and motivate the encounter between children belonging to different schools and social contexts. 

'No Borders' has been performed by the students at Notte Bianca della Scuola (May 26, 2017) and at BeatFull Festival (September 2, 2017).

NO BORDER by Manifesta 12 Education and C. Picciotto

Manifesta, the European Nomadic Biennial, changes its location every two years. Manifesta 12 was hosted in Palermo, Italy. Manifesta 13 is taking place in Marseille, France, from 28.08 to 29.11.2020 (new dates)
Manifesta purposely strives to keep its distance from what are often seen as the dominant centres of artistic production, instead seeking fresh and fertile terrain for the mapping of a new cultural topography. This includes innovations in curatorial practices, exhibition models and education. Each Manifesta biennial aims to investigate and reflect on emerging developments in contemporary art, set within a European context. In doing so, we present local, national and international audiences with new aspects and forms of artistic expression.
