...it became obvious that she was adrift without a pilot. No distress signals were flagged. Captain Morehouse of the Dei Gratia knew Captain Briggs personally as an experienced seaman. The first mate (chief mate) of the Dei Gratia, Oliver Deveau, crossed over to the Mary Celeste in a rowboat with a detachment to investigate the vessel. He found a faulty bilge pump and a lot of water between the decks. He reported to his captain that the ship was a "thoroughly wet mess" ("the whole ship was a thoroughly wet mess"). Even the captain's bed was completely soaked. In the galley, the stove had been ripped out of its place, and kitchen utensils were scattered about.

Various hatches and the lazarette door were open, the ship's clock was out of order and the compass destroyed. The sextant and chronometer could not be found, indicating that the ship had been deliberately abandoned. The only lifeboat appeared to have been intentionally launched rather than washed away (though other sources claim it was still on board).
