RJ Nu-Disco & Edits Mix March 2025

The first half of this episode of Funkier Sounds was very much a Southport Weekender affair, thanks to me making my second visit there last weekend. It was, with one exception, all tracks I’d heard there, so after a little warm up it was more or less wall to wall soulful house with a splash of gospel house for good measure. I ended my hour with something brand new from me, that will be available for a free download later this week. 

For hour 2 it was time to hand over to Alessandro Oliveira, a DJ and radio host from Brazil. Alessandro has kindly invited me to be on his show, and I’ll be his guest this week! Alessandro’s mix is a brilliant disco house selection, but not that slightly annoying type of jacking disco house - this is refined, beefed up interpretations of classics, with a few lesser known gems in there too. It really is very good!

My hour started off nice and funky, quickly built up the tempo to cram in a few promos, and ended up with a few dusty disco belters north of 130BPM. Fun times!

I was lucky to snag a very special guest for the second hour. French DJ, singer, composer, multi instrumentalist, producer and audio engineer David Baluteau AKA Joi N’Juno. He’s another one of my favourite producers, specialising in funky, danceable tunes with African influences. His mix is bloody brilliant - lots of tropical sunshine sounds, some solid nu-disco and housed up worldwide oddities, with a few of his own in there, including a bit of unreleased stuff. Loved every minute of this one, and I hope you enjoy it too.

I recently read Wayne Anthony's Class of 88 and wanted to try and write a warehouse acid track in the style of that era. I took samples of a demonstration which took place in Trafalgar Square, London on Jan 27th 1990. It was organized by all the main UK rave promoters who'd grown sick of being shutdown every time they attempted to throw a party. I've massive respect for all those who attended on a cold & rainy day in London. They just wanted the Freedom to Party!  

Warehouse Party

No guest mix this time, so I kindly stepped in to supply the whole 120 minutes of grooves. We kicked off with some lovely soul a’la Aretha and Marvin, then went into some low tempo boogie, some weirdness, some African vibes, more weirdness, and via a few stop offs along the way we ended up with some beautiful, lesser known disco. I had fun!
