THE salvation that the gospel [proclaims] to man is entirely 
free. A fundamental principle [of it is this]: it is not of works, 
lest any man should boast (Eph 2:8-9). God hath saved us, not 
by works of righteousness that we have done, but according to His 
mercy (Ti 3:5). Yet the assurance is uttered with equal solemnity and 
precision: without holiness, no man shall see the Lord (Heb 12:14). It 
becomes, therefore, a most important topic for us to consider: What is
