Salut, comment allez-vous? It's been a year since my last Depeche Mode mix. With the band blazing their way across Europe this summer and with a really solid new album in the bag, I just thought it was high-time to do a part two...
First of all, I'd really like to thank anyone/everyone who has played/downloaded/commented on my first mix. Soundcloud is a fantastic platform for DJs like myself (from a small town) to reach out to a broader audience and connect with other Depeche Mode/music lovers from all over le monde! Merci beaucoup from the bottom of my Irish heart x

Hello and bienvenue to my debut on the Ramp Show. 

I'm both delighted and flattered to have been asked to provide a monthly mix (on last Thursday of every month) for Lebrosks Ramp Shows. It's a musical honour to be rubbing shoulders with the likes of such highly talented performers as: Dan Wilde, DJ Daigo, Rory Hoy, Zenit Incompatible, Johnny Pluse, Janette Slack, Meeloox, AJ Manns, Telephunken, Rhino Soundsystem, Audio Infunktion, VRT, Funky Mosquito, Sychosis, EZ Icarus, Lebrosk & DJ Kimble....We all have different influences, directions, styles and skills but at the end of the day, it's only about the music...

"The View from Half Way Down". 

A beautifully sad winter tale of old with themes of regret, fading light and death. On this journey we’ve selected songs from 1899-1975 and the mix is split and blended into three equal measures: orchestral, acoustic, winter atmosphere.

Soundtracking a dystopian movie would be a wonderful boffin job. With so many directions to go in sonically, it’s a broad pallet to fill with colours and downtempo textures. Winter is all around us and this is naturally reflected within the makings of this mixtape. Songs that are character-based, by that I mean, based on the voice you are hearing, for example, the depth of Scott Walkers voice, or Lee Hazlewood’s baritone bring you on journeys into their soul directly through their majestic singing voices. Lots of brilliant movies have been ‘character-based’, a sure-fire route to success once the protagonist has an interesting story of life struggles where happiness is fleeting and sadness inevitable. The overall story becomes irrelevant as we are entwined with the performers' adventure through adversity. Over time it seems that we get to know them a little, as we get used to their habits. We root for them, we feel sad for them; we wish we were them - then we don’t. We know we can never be them. 

We enter worlds we know nothing about. When we get there, we arrive at honesty. Nina Simone’s song is quite possibly one of the deepest/saddest songs ever recorded – “You’ll never know the pain of using a name you never owned”. REMs ‘Everybody Hurts’ is a sugary pop song in comparison. 

The orchestral sweeps of mid 20th Century avant-garde European love movies have a timeless sci-fi loop to them also, the duality of timelines connect in a visceral way. It’s soothing to not know where a piece of music starts and ends. Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) is a work for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, written in 1899 while the French composer was studying at the Conservatoire de Paris under Gabriel Fauré. Ravel published an orchestral version in 1910 using two flutes, an oboe, two clarinets (in B♭), two bassoons, two horns, harp, and strings.

Music allows the listener time to reflect on surroundings and perceptions and can shape an autodidactic worldview. This freedom of thought releases us to the happiest of margins, where powerful sensations are at once unlocked. 

Isolating harmonies really helps tunes the senses. When you’re left alone with only voices and breaths it instantly feels both close and far away, drifting on the wind like snow. A similar intimacy applies when it’s just a man and his guitar, an extension of the souls deepest feeling. Nick Drake, now a ghost in a stately mansion probably, typifies the atmosphere of late 60’s British folk music, just as David Crosby did around the same time in Southern California. How do they connect across this vast distance: spirit. This is clearly something we cannot see, visible only in another dimension. 

If you have a song written by Led Zeppelin named in your honour you might be someone pretty special, no? Well there’s a man now living in County Cork called Roy Harper, who apparently has a voice that ‘grows on you’ and this apparently puts off a lot of people, like blue food does. His tone is like no other, laced with black magik and dragons blood. Time must be invested just to get to know him, through his songs…he must have been like that in real life, cool. Sixto Rodriguez is another faintly-dimming star in the closest constellation. He brings a worldwearyness to proceedings with his moody ascending scales as he tells us that it’s good to talk about important issues, not to be afraid of our own existence. He was considered an outright rebel in 1969, his direct social commentary being at least five years ahead of its time. No mean feat that. They made a lovely movie about him.

The essence of this mix is 'The Blues' 

BB King once said that "The Blues are a feeling or an attitude that anyone can experience if they are simply open to it". It's also been said that only those with some intellectual intelligence can actually feel the blues, others simply feel angry, spiteful, sad or miserable. A paradoxical mystery sugar-coated in something bittersweet, musically and emotionally.
Yes maybe it can trace its roots (as can hip-hop, soul or jazz) back to widespread exploitation and poverty but that's not the issue here. This is a take, a stab, shot in the dark, an juggled attempt, a 30-yard dipping volley, an loose experiment, a wee trip, a different kind of journey: (an 79 minute mix, fit for a blank CD) aimed at delving deep into blues music in its many different interlocking forms. From Alison Moyet singing 80's electro to Elvis lamenting the loss of another lover. Listen to the lyrics of 'White Lines' or 'Once in a Lifetime' and tell me that's not the blues... 
So here's a selection box of tunes attempting to capture the sweetspot of retro-modern blues music.  And.....I've just put a little hot sauce on it....

KRAUTROCK AND THE BUILDING OF MODERN GERMANY. 

West Germany after the Second World War was a country in shock: estranged from its recent history, and adrift from the rest of Europe. This proved to be fertile ground for a generation of musicians who, from the 1960s onwards, would develop the experimental sounds that became known as ‘Krautrock’.
Krautrock has taken its place in the firmament. From its origins in hippy circus tents around Dusseldorf in the late 1960’s, to the lofty likes of The Fall, Joy Division, Stereolab & LCD Soundsystem, it is globally revered. Whenever a new group wish to show their experimental credentials, they will reach up & pick out the word ‘Krautrock’ like a condiment to add a radical dash of cool to their press release.
Yet it is well over four decades since Krautrock petered-out, its demise practically unnoticed as the media were sent into paroxysms by punk, or confounded by the supersonic sequencers of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” and the emergence of Disco, which, at the time, threatened to reset the global pulse. During this era (late 70s), Krautrock died away. 
How did Krautrock, so lightly regarded in its own day both at home and abroad, become one of the cornerstones for modern pop & rock music? Its influence has been long reaching and wide ranging, created a similarly lengthy host of styles which descended from it – ambient, hip hop, post-rock, electronic, psych-rock, trance, rave, and post-punk. Yet for all its hipness, it is still disregarded or only dimly understood. 
Krautrock signified the rebuilding of modern Germany. By the late 1960s, many cities were still in ruins & the people were shaking off the humiliation of the war; collective guilt. Starved of culture & desperately needing an injection of fresh philosophies, a new form of music was due to replace the outdated ultra-kitsch ‘Schlager’ music, Germany’s default trad music scene. Bands started emerging from Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Koln & Dusseldorf.
But, where did the term ‘Krautrock’ come from? 
It’s an absurdly offensive term to Germans, yet it’s used unselfconsciously by a generation  who would no more dream of calling Germans ‘Jerries’ or ‘Fritz’. The artists involved in this scene are bemused by the phrase. ‘Kraut’ means ‘herb’ in German = ‘Herb rock’. Over the years the word has lost the accidental pejorative connotation it once had. It’s become semantically cleaned with the wash of time. How could a single word encapsulate both the spacey, ambient extremes of Ash Ra Temple and the heavy industrial collage of Faust? The faux-bourgeois placidity of Kraftwerk and the angry, messy agitation of Amon Duul? The ecclesiastical heights of Popol Vuh and the sacrilegious depths of Can? The extreme, maximal suffocating noise of Neu! and the spare, horticultural ambient beauty of Harmonia?
There is, quite simply, something jaggedly appealing about the very way in which the word sits on the page or rolls off the tongue. It’s certainly preferable to other options that never really stuck, such as ‘Teutonic Railroad Rock n Roll’.
When Klaus Dinger & Michael Rother left Kraftwerk to form Neu!, with ‘hidden member’ Connie Plank, they created the famous “Motorik” beat, a continuous, pulsating 4/4 rhythm that became one of the musical trademarks of this experimental music. Krautrock draws on the gamut of styles – 20th Century classical, musique concrete, free jazz, progressive rock, blues, psychedelia, funk, electronic as well as its own, hand-wrought originality. 
Dinger referred to the droning motorik or komische style as the ‘Apache Beat’. Neu!’s ‘Hallogallo’ sums up perfectly the designed experience and is the quintessential sound of 1970s Germany.
This mixtape celebrates this forward-flowing music, as Dinger himself emphasized, “It is very much a human beat, it is essentially about life, how you have to keep moving, get on, and stay in motion”.

What you have in front of you is an old fashioned, tipsy, Christmas mixtape. Inspired by 1960's and driven by Dean Martin, the real king of Christmas.  Allow yourself go back to an era when life seemed simpler, less globalised and capitalised. 
For this mix to go down properly, to precisely taste what I'm trying to say here, I've added a secret ingredient to help compliment the next seventy-five minutes...something hot to warm your soul this holiday season. This may be an unorthodox step to take but "Oh by gosh by golly, it's time for Gluhwein and Knusperhauschen biscuits"! 
- My secret Christmas Gluhwein recipe goes as follows: 
1 bottle of red wine, 500ml apple juice, 1 can of pear cider, 50g sugar, 1 cinnamon stick snapped in half, 4 cloves, 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, 1/4 tsp ground all spice, couple of splashes of Cointreau. Just bring to the boil slowly, take 25-30mins to cook through. Repeat the stated dose.

Endtroducing...The Ramp Xmas Show

It was only by the late 1960s, after West Germany’s commercial and industrial infrastructure had long been rebuilt that a generation was at last able to query the wilful amnesia of their elders, some of whom still occupied positions of power (also in America) despite being implicated in the Third Reich. All of this added an extra dimension to the sudden blossoming of pop and rock worldwide in the late 1960s, of which West Germany were as enthusiastic consumers as anyone. For many musicians, this simply meant imitating or doing cover versions of the work of acclaimed Anglo-American artists. For many young West Germans, this meant lapping up the works of rock behemoths like The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Cream, Zappa & the Stones. 
Other musicians, however, were deeply conscious of the need to create musical forms and hybrids that rejected the templates set down by the ‘cultural occupying force’ of the Brits/Yanks who maintained a strong military presence in the country. Hence the coincidental, diverse groups popping up all over West Germany, who were all like-minded in their urge to start from scratch, thus creating new forms unspotted by their dreadful past and antithetical to the banal, head-in-the-sands kitsch of ‘schlager’ – the traditional German music. 
Paradoxically, these West German musicians engaged in the quest for inspiration or for jumping-off points; Jazz, Hendrix, UK Prog Rock, Turkish Funk, South American rhythms. The point of this ‘new music’ was to take a journey – weather it was to the interior forested heartlands of Germany, the dormant depths of its soul, or to the farthermost points of East or West, this filtered through the dire German post-war experience. It delved into the realm of electronics and the future offered was one of speculative, anti-nostalgia hope. 
All of the artists on this mixtape were in some way or other touched by this spirit, this quest of self (re) discovery. They may have had conventional upbringings – but all set out on their own, long and winding roads.

“So what is Yacht Rock?”

Yacht Rock is that smooth, mellow music that emanated from Southern California in the late 1970s and early 80s. It has long served as the anthem for the “yuppies” of the 80s, since they LOVE to listen to Yacht Rock as they cruise through the harbor on the way to meet their cocaine dealer. If you’ve ever visited the dentist or been in an elevator you’ve definitely heard some Yacht Rock.

Yacht rock was one of the most commercially successful genres to emerge from the '70s and yet has managed to evade concise definition since its inception. Originally known as the West Coast sound or ‘Adult-Oriented soft rock’, it is a broad music style with a strong aesthetic drawing on sources such as smooth soul & jazz, R&B and disco. Common stylistic traits include high-quality production fluidity, clean high-pitched vocals and a focus on light, catchy melodies. Its name was coined in 2005 due to its association with the popular Southern Californian leisure activity of sailing. Officially, to be considered Yacht Rock, the song must have been released between 1975 and 1985.

The joy of Yacht Rock is just that...its joyousness. This is bubblegum music for the jet set or the wannabe Richie Rich's. It’s delightfully shallow, and part of its vibrancy is that it doesn't have a bad thought in its head. (Some of the songs obviously don't have any thoughts in their head, but if you want to have an intellectually stimulating conversation about, say, Toto's "Rosanna," then have at it.) But never forget that part of its charm lies in its inability for deeper analysis. Part of yacht rock’s charm is being many things but only to a small degree. Songs can be jazzy, but not experimental. Brass sections are great but don’t get too funky. And the songs should rock, but not rock.

Songs usually feature a signature solo cut from amaestro, builds the sleek jazz-funk into a more digital-sounding landscape, with our heroes stacking precise vocal harmonies over synth buzz and bent-note guitar leads.

Some agreed-upon elements are crucial to yacht rock: One is its fluidity, with more emphasis on a catchy, easy-feeling melody than on beat or rhythm. Another is a generally lighthearted attitude in the lyrics. Think Seals & Crofts "Summer Breeze," Christopher Cross' "Ride Like the Wind" or Bill Withers' "Just the Two of Us." Yes, as its label suggests, music that would fit perfectly being played from the deck of a luxurious boat on the high seas.

For many listeners, it boils down to a feeling or mood that cannot be found in other kinds of music: Simply put, you know it when you hear it.

Untitled Yacht Rock Project

For the third & final installment of my Depeche Mode trilogy, I've decided upon doing a live concert mix. With the Delta Machine Tour finishing up last week (March 2014), completing 108 concerts worldwide, this is a homage to another monumental world tour and the truly unforgettable experience of going to see Depeche live in the flesh...
This is the spring of our souls and perfect time to release a 'live album' using the basic structure of this tours' setlist. To preserve it's freshness for daily consumption, I've added in other live tracks from previous tours down the years; in total, 9 different DM shows have been used for this mix. Please feel free to exceed the stated dose...

I got asked recently to make a Strokes dj set. Whilst I was in the middle of another dj mix project in a totally different genre, I immediately accepted the challenge. 
The Strokes done been all up in my favourite bands so I’ve put together this setlist and tried my best not to mangle any of these precious songs. I’ve attempted to be impartial but not obvious. The big hits are absent but I’ve tried to not veer too far into indulgent fandom. This mixtape contains 15 songs, with all six albums represented, clocking in at under an hour.

Different Strokes

Laurel Canyon was a nexus of counter-culture activity and attitudes in the mid/late 1960s & early 70s. It became home to famous L.A. musicians – Cass Elliott, Frank Zappa, Gram Parsons, Jim Morrison, The Byrds, Joni Mitchell, Carole King & the CSNY crew. This created a fusion of folk, rock, Psychedelic & country thus unleashing a new musical revolution. They slept together, took drugs together, formed bands together and left behind a forever legacy. The free spiritedness of the hippie era could be felt across the cottages and hills dotting the Laurel Canyon area – creating a “bohemian refuge”.

“When I first came out to L.A. [in 1968], my friend [photographer] Joel Bernstein found an old book in a flea market that said: Ask anyone in America where the craziest people live and they’ll tell you California. Ask anyone in California where the craziest people live and they’ll say Los Angeles. Ask anyone in Los Angeles where the craziest people live and they’ll tell you Hollywood. Ask anyone in Hollywood where the craziest people live and they’ll say Laurel Canyon. And ask anyone in Laurel Canyon where the craziest people live and they’ll say Lookout Mountain. So I bought a house on Lookout Mountain.” – Joni Mitchell.

Every mix I do has a ‘concept’. Back at the start of the year, I picked up three new records – David Crosby ‘If I Could Only Remember My Name’, John Phillips ‘The Wolfking of L.A.’ & Gene Clark’s ‘No Other’. It’s from their essence that I’ve curated this mix. I’ve grown up with a ubiquitous obsession with Los Angeles and it still plays a big part in my creative side. There’s an element of Tarantino’s recent flick in here too, so this is my homage to a place in time that will never be recreated.

Endtroducing...The Ramp Show Vol. 5

‘B Movie Mix’ is Cinematic Crime Score Soundtrack (fictional) based on a time of conflict (fact). 

Inside this soundtrack we jump from Blaxploitation American funk to brass-led themes laid on a sonic bed of propulsive bass lines, haunting drum beats, wah wah guitars, and epic Latin strings nodding to disco. There’s also room for crime-funk pieces from Italy, France, Germany & Venezuela. 
This music was composed in an era (1971-83) of political turmoil and civil unrest as the world moved into the 3rd industrial revolution. The claustrophobia of these compositions reflect this state of flux.

My last few mixes have been more ‘mainstream’ than usual so I’ve kept this one obscure.

Bowiemixtwo [Mila's Mix]

We recently did a DJ event called 'The Dystopian Disco' which featured only music of a post-punk/new wave/minor key nature. People just love the duality of this genre; the darkness and the light. This mix is a reflection of this category of music which began in 1977 when punk went out of fashion almost as quick as it came in. Those tired of standard 2 chord trashing went on to experiment in different directions, inspiring others—particularly in the London and New York, but also in places like Manchester and Koln — to incorporate unusual sounds, from electronica to free jazz to world music, into their punk-rock roots. The results were as musically and lyrically diverse as they were artistically vital. Post-punk lyrics could be scathingly political or absurdly nonsensical. There was an anger and bleakness to much of the music, but it was often masked by a playfulness nature. These were musicians interested in seeing where music could go in era that hadn't yet been dominated by synths and computers.

Depeche Mode....The best electronic band ever? Surely, no other group/band have ever come close to sustaining the level of quality for over 30 years? In this mix I've tried to capture the live feel of a DM gig and incorporate it into an extended mix. I've covered tracks from the 1st album in 1981 right through to the most recent stuff.

"Neil very kindly asked me to contribute a DJ mix to this series of 'Classified Records Instore Sessions' and I've decided to turn to the world of film soundtracks for inspiration. 
Movie scores can cover any musical genre or style imaginable which gave me plenty of scope. Sometimes the soundtrack to a film is far superior to the film itself and can therefore be appreciated on its own merits. 
So expect to hear some Morricone,  Acid Folk, Italian Electronica, Krautrock and even some Library Music.

Classified Records - Instore Sessions #2 [ft. David White]

As part of our ongoing instore DJ sessions, I've jumped on the shops decks to make a 'space jazz' styled mix combining two of my favourite hobbies; astrology and music. This is an exploration of the celestial collision between jazz, spirituality, soul, 70s politics and human resonance. It is called 'Betelgeuse' (a weird name befitting a weird mix). Danke, Neil.


Betelgeuse is a red supergiant pulsating star in the Orion constellation, popularised for sounding just like "beetle-juice". Classified as a red supergiant of spectral type M1-2, Betelgeuse is one of the largest stars visible to the naked eye. If it was at the centre of our Solar System, its surface would lie beyond the asteroid belt and it would engulf the orbits of Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars & Jupiter. Estimated to be 1400 times larger than our sun, the most likely star-formation scenario for Betelgeuse is that it is a runaway star from the Orion OB1 Association. It left the main sequence about one million years ago and has been a red supergiant for about 40,000 years. The red supergiant star appears to be in no danger of imminently exploding, even though a recent, dramatic dip in brightness has baffled academics. If and when Betelgeuse explodes and becomes a black hole, it will shine as bright as the half-Moon for more than six months as all this silent brightness would be concentrated into one point in the sky, a supernova.

Classified Records - Instore Sessions #4 [ft. Betelgeuse]

There seems to be a little confusion on the distinction between 'art' and 'craft'. 
Is DJing something that almost anyone can learn to execute, relatively easily, from a technical standpoint? 
Absolutely. 
Can anyone then translate that into creating a strong emotional response among their audience, or pushing forward a culture? 
Nope. 
Some djs are tradespeople, some are craftsmen, some part-entertainer-part-jukebox and one in every two million people are artists. 
Us? We just love music.
