We are back this month with another premiere, this time featuring a remix from one of our own - EVM128 and his version of JV1080 taken from the new XL Regular EP dropping on ANMA Records Apr 8th!  Listen to the full EP preview on Soundcloud (hit that Buy button above).

Following up from last year’s Outlines compilation, where Rome-based DJ and producer opened the album with a track jointly produced alongside Future Jazz Ensemble, the new offering shares further insight into XL’s expressive ideas, influences, and openness to fusing the old with the new.

A clear influence of the BRUK scene holds a common thread throughout the release, where the undeniably iconic rhythms of Broken Beat are reshaped; simultaneously tipping the hat to the sound makers who’ve paved the way and reworking the drums, bass and percussion to accommodate the harmonies, overlapping counterpoint elements and tones of keys, synths and horns that add a different overall texture that is new, individual and reflective of todays’ emotive depth and complexity in the sonic movements of Italy, London and Europe’s electronic dance scenes.

The influence extends further into the use of adlib and the way it’s puncturing the rhythm of the tracks by means of its placement within the groove. However, the newness of the record shines through via XL Regular’s moulding of synthesis and merging of faster tempos (hear ‘’XL3000’’). As one listens to the record, the way each element is arranged leaves each track sounding as if an extremely tight live band was working those -drums, bass, synths, horns and vocals- live (hear ‘’Sometimes’’).

The bubbling and high-octave synth textures perfectly compliment the bass’ synthetic infusion while not overpowering the melodies, keys, vocals and horns that are sitting in the middle of the frequency range, where the magic of current new Jazz shines through by means of XL Regular’s creative expression via use of multi-layer harmony and shaping of tone that is becoming undeniably familiar to the sounds of the current London Jazz scene bonding with electronic dance productions.

The record explores time by providing high up tempos and by adjusting such tempos through each track to reflect the right mood of the moment. Whereas one track could be for the beginning of your night, the other could be for the closing of such night, all varyingly different and individually explorative, yet all a set of a common creative expression by one soul (hear ‘’Jv1080’’ for the slower jam).

However, the icing on the cake is EVM128’s remix of ‘’Jv1080’’, a more stripped, low-end heavier and dub-focused version of the track that iconically puts a familiar sound of 128’s, a tried and tested BRUK forefather, into the context of new things to come by means of further bridging the international separations of today’s turmoil in the world and melding the sounds and ideas of old and new into something personal, free and special by means of XL Regular’s first solo debut EP, which is just a glimpse of more rhythms soon come.

Brand new year, brand new imprint. CoOp Presents is an all-new record label, founded by IG Culture and Alex Phountzi, set to focus on the depth and wealth of talent that exists within the London Bruk movement and beyond, a project which they consider to be a continuation in the same spirit of the legendary CoOp movement.

Last Summer, the CoOp Presents crew released an EP via First Word Records entitled ‘Selectors Assemble’. This was the first collective offering from a foundation comprised of UK dance music pioneers and nowadays bruk soldiers, navigating in & around the world of broken beat and beyond over the last two decades to the present day. Reinvigorated by recent Boiler Room sessions, the crew proceeded with more parties, more radio shows, and gained access to an unlimited pool of all-new sounds. The squad were primed and ready to move forwards from the famed days of the Plastic People dances, and further explore the evolution of their sound.

Selectors Assemble exists as an umbrella to showcase talent from originators and newcomers alike, transcending genres and geographics. Over the summer, more members were introduced to the clique, and it was clear there was much more work to be done. So we proceed. 
Setting it off, we bring you ‘Selectors Assemble Volume Two’.
The first six-track selection from the stable for 2018. 

James Rudie opens the selection with ‘Port Funk’, a soulful 4/4 stomper, adrift with jazz licks and weighty bassline. Danvers up next with ‘My Nina’, a deep vibesy breakbeat opener that chops away, flipping its groove several times through the track. EVM128 steps up & steps in with the no-messin’ tough tribal bounce of the ‘Gamma Riddim’ next. Cengiz opens up the flipside of the plate with some straight up bruk-funk that rides ‘On On On’. Entekenters the dance with a twisted swagger and next level sonics on ‘Robbery’, ticking numerous groove boxes, before we approach the final cut from N15’s own Miraa May, on the soulful flex of
‘I Don’t Want Ya (Didi)’. The rub on this last one coming courtesy of label founders, NameBrandSound aka IG Culture and Alex Phountzi.

Selectors Assemble appear on rotation monthly on Worldwide FM, as well as numerous other shows and dances individually, including upcoming parties at The Jazz Cafe, and the formation of a new base, The Flex Space, a multi purpose warehouse space in East London. The movement is only destined to grow. The stage for 2018 is set. Get involved.

Astral Black step back in the ring with the 5th instalment of their 'Frass FM' compilation series. The UK label follow up Xao's critically acclaimed 'Eternal Care Unit' LP with these 16 exclusive tracks from some of the most exciting names in British club music, both this decade and last.

Illusive Astral Black OG, DJ Milktray turns in the skippy club bubbler Instinct, his first release for 4 years. Tiff's Joints label-head Poison Zcora (FKA Born Cheating) takes the Frass FM opportunity to make his production debut with the gloriously bounce-strapped, broken stomper, 'Victory Over The British Museum'. Rinse FM/6-Figure Gang's Jossy Mitsu brings us the second of our production debuts with the breaks-laden 'Whirl', whilst elsewhere fellow Rinse FM resident, Izco, handles intro duties with deep chords and rolling percs. Maxwell Owin (South London Jazz scene's answer to Rick Rubin) teams up with Anurah on the fittingly titled 'TOI 700 d', named after our closest habitable planet; and long-term Astral Black affiliate & Co-op/Soulection member Sivey reimagines Dave Gruisin's 'Modaji' into a holy-spirit capturing 160-bpm foot-work roller.

If that's not enough, the compilation boasts equally as note-worthy contributions from the likes of multi-genre Team Sesh producer hnrk, Grime 2 wonder-kid Polonis, label mainstays Creep Woland, Xao, F17, Shy One & Impey, new school squad members Bruised Skies & Thugwidow, legendary UK rap producer/mastering mastermind, Telemachus and 616/Swamp81 affiliate, Sumgii.

The free download compilation not only acts as an audio snapshot of UK club music in 2020 but marks what looks set to be an exciting year for the Astral Black label. Junglist Creep Woland is set to follow hot on the heels of Frass with his 'Chamberlain' EP, followed by 'Requiem For a Sesh' - the collaborative project from Bruised Skies & Thugwidow shortly after.

04. DJ Milktray - Instinct

EVM128 is a producer and DJ. Originally from Bristol but rooted in London. He has DJ’d alongside the Likes of Gilles Peterson, Ross Allen, Don Letts, Norman Jay, Greg Wilson, IG Culture, Afronaut, Henry Wu, K 15, Neneh Cherry, DJ Vadim, Roots Manuva, LV, Artwork (Magneticman), Afrika Hi-tek, Silkie and Flako to name a few! His Dj'ing is eclectic ,with influences ranging from 80's Boogie, Soul, Electro, Broken Beat, Afro, House and Disco to HipHop, Ragga, Jungle, Garage and Bass genres. 

His first EP "Groove Content" released on Ross Allen's Meltdown Music Recordings is a mash up of styles, part Dilla, Part Joy Orbison, but is it's own thing entirely. Gilles Peterson hailed it as a 'classic' and 'right up his street'... Groove Content is in Gilles' All winners top 50 of 2011. 

In 2014 after releasing two EP’s he has steadily gained support from Annie Mac on Radio 1 and various Rinse FM shows, as well as DJ support from Scott Garcia, DJ Cartier, LTJ Bukem, Brackles, Jesse Rose, Richy Ahmed, Dom (SubClub), Tom Dinsdale (Audio Bullys), Gorgon City, Joyce Muniz, Bill Brewster (DJ History), Jozif, Kyodai, Shadow Child, Rob Smith (Smith & Mighty/ RSD) My Nu Leng, Tensnake, Monki (Rinse), Maribou State, Thristian (Boiler Room) Auntie Flo + more.. Having already played the Boiler Room and released a single on Somethinksounds (with EL-b on remix duties) 2015 was looking good for EVM. 

After a remix for Bunny On Acid featuring Amp Fiddler which had its first radio play by Lefto, he then released his first single of the year on `Studio Rockers called ‘Beyond’ featuring UK Soul legend Omar, which got played on various radio shows, podcasts and dancefloors worldwide! He then had UK Garage track of the week on Rinse FM with his remix of Scott Garcia’s G.A.R.A.G.E ft MC Neat. 

On 19th Sept 2015 he released his debut album 'NOVA' on Studio Rockers, featuring collaborations with Omar, Shy One, (DVA Music) Daiva, (Keymono) Bahia, (Tru Thoughts) and Romaine Smith. EVM has been noted in a Guardian review as being one of the producers at the vanguard of London’s Brokenbeat resurgence. In 2016 he clocked up releases on BBE, Local talk and WotNot Music. 

Most recently, through performing at Dimensions Festival in 2016 and a seminal CoOp presents show at London’s legendary Boiler room in 2017, EVM was brought in by IG Culture and Alex Phountzi (aka NameBrandSound) as a new member of the CoOp Presents, Selectors Assemble family along with a whole slew of new Bruk Soldiers that form Selectors Assemble. These include Danvers, James Rudie, Entek, Wonky Logic, Neue Grafik, Cengiz, Oliver Night, Gonzi and Ry Da Vibe. With a ton of events and shows happening, Selectors Asssemble have been busy in the studio and setting foundations for for an ever growing collective.

EVM, now heavily involved in the CoOp presents label and Selectors Assemble crew, with an EP and a second album to drop, its full steam ahead for 2019…
