SIREN's Moonbow celebrates all things piano with a drone-leaning contribution to the Concept in Practice series. After all, it is Piano Day.

"Started 4 years ago by German composer Nils Frahm, Piano Day falls on the 88th day of each year (this year it's March 29th) and many events and releases come together to celebrate the magic of this (conventionally) 88-key instrument. For a while I’ve been wanting to make a mix of ambient and drone music that is centered around sustained piano notes, and today felt like the perfect time to release it. Recently, meditation has been my lifeline whilst being essentially house bound for two months due to health reasons, and I owe so much to ambient music for being such an incredible tool for healing — so I hope this mix can also help others too.

Sonically, this mix is as much about the moments of silence as it is about the music itself, with each new track emerging from a mist left by the one before. I wanted to make a mix that honours the piano’s ability to beautifully bridge the gap between acoustic and electronic music." – Moonbow

It is such an honour to present the next Deep Mind Music mix, made by one of my favourite artists: tarotplane. 

I first came across tarotplane’s music through a YouTube recommendation, and was immediately captivated by it’s semi-lucid faraway haziness, at once feeling both timeless and nostalgic. I was keen to find more of this amazing music and learn about the artist behind it. I started chatting to tarotplane on Soundcloud, and he kindly sent me much more of his music, I can only recommend going away and listening to all of it to experience it firsthand. It covers the breadth and wonder of what ambient music can be, at once transcendent, beautiful, and mystical. 

I feel so grateful that tarotplane has made a mix for Deep Mind Music, as his music and philosophy about music really embodies what this is all about for me. His addition to the series is a stunning visual journey that seamlessly ties together music both new and old in a slowly evolving, texturally rich, emotional narrative, taking you far far away as it unfolds.

tarotplane says about this mix:

“I don't DJ very often. I really do enjoy it when people are nice enough to ask me. What I like about it is that you can really explore the odd and unexpected relationships between different pieces of music. Sometimes its the actual notes themselves and how they play off each other. Sometimes its texture, sometimes its emotion. I don't let tracks run that long as as general rule because I am always searching for these moments. I think of my style as "action ambient."

When I am putting things together, I am always looking for that 30 seconds where 2 different tracks join together to make something really new. It's always a guess whether it will work or not, but when it does it's a fantastic feeling. It's exciting to put these tracks into new contexts. "

STS (2019) is an 8-channel installation work comprised of recordings made over a 15-year period on differing Serge Modular systems recorded at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, the Columbia Computer Music Center, Elektron Musik Studion, the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, Harvard University Studio for Electro-Acoustic Composition, and Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio convolved with fragments of speech, recitation, and extra-textual verbal communication. 

Partly an homage to formative speech-transformation works such as Herbert Eimert’s “Epitaph für Aikichi Kuboyama (1960-1962)”, the mapping of the frequency spectra of time-aligned formants to a catalog of full-range synthesizer signals yields a warm, attenuated field of sustained sound that ebbs through each space at a modest volume, inviting the listener to dwell on individual timbres, phrases, and conversations while assessing the overall sound-field. Utilizing a sliding, modular structure to diffuse linked stereo pairs of convolutions into 4 discrete chambers, the individual parts become groups of voices heard distinctly, overheard from the next room, or made subliminally aware of via bleed-through from each adjoining space.

SYGMATURE 1 is a compilation of modern atmospheric music, a milestone of radio.syg.ma’s year of existence. Twenty two international artists, musicians and producers who contributed to the radio took part in this release.

Featured artists present different styles and approaches to recording soundscapes, inspired by experimental ambient, field recordings, electroacoustic, musique concrète and low-fi electronics. Sounds and atmospheres they create range from futuristic, distorted or high-pitched to more meditative and somewhat esoteric.
