Although born in Nashville, Tennessee, Shayne McCarter grew up in the town of Columbia, Tennessee in the 70's.

Having joined the high school band as a brass tubaist he bought his first bass guitar from Hewgley's Music Shop in 1974. McCarter soon became part of the high school stage band featuring jazz standards with brass and electric instrumentation. At the age of 14 he joined The Rainbow Sound as bassist, a 32 piece choir electric contata.Traveling across the mid south and performing for 2 seasons. From there, he went on to play with local rock groups, (Hot Ice, Shaded White) where he played alongside Rob Pig, Pamela Joe Delk, Sharon Gleaves and Rex Wells. A key mentor was guitarist and songwriter Jack Presbury, collaborating and honing his craft. During these early years McCarter's songwriting skills would emerge with a catalog of several hundred songs by age 18. In 1978 he joined forces with the all original band called: "Know". Teaming up with Neal Smith and the late Paul Hull, their new creative style was reminiscent of British bands such as Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes. 


Entering Art school at the University of Memphis music engineering program in 1981 McCarter became involved with the art culture in the Memphis area working laser light shows at the Pink Palace, freelancing at Ardent Studios.
